Cage>90% of the mainstream hip hop scene.

All due respect to Kanye, this(Hell's Winter) is the best produced album of the year. That DJ Shadow beat is IN-****ING-SANE. It's only 9.99 this week, I bought a copy for myself and one of my friends.

it frustrates me when artists arent mainstream for whatever reason and people sleep on them.

Prince is a hustler, when he went on tour for his last album, he gave everyone a copy and included it in the ticket price. Easily went platinum.

most of def jux>Cage
in my opinion

Their production is always on point though. RJD2 is my favorite new producer, and El-P comes out with a lot decent material too

i heard some of the hell's winter songs have dj shadow production. i think hes kind of overrated, but he always drops a gem or two.

DJ Shadow only produces one song. The only MC's better than Cage, on Def Jux, are Murs, Mr. Lif and C Rayz Walz. However, none of their albums are as good as Hell's Winter, I've never really dug Cage's music, but this album is ridiculous. Def jux has a strong label, El-P needs to stick to the beats, I can't remember him every saying a dope rhyme.

blockburna944
09-23-2005, 02:25 AM
"signed to rawkus/ id rather be mouth****ed my nazis unconscious"
not the best rhyme, but deep space 9mm in the best El-p song.

i havent heard a full c-rayz walz album, but i like his verses.
if youre into beat only albums, el-p and rjd2 have a couple good ones.

but the best emcee on def jux is aesop rock, whose material is 10x better than cage (i do like the new album tho). labor days is a great lp.

also, canibal ox's cold vein is the best hiphop album ever made by def jux.

i think mr. lif's i phantom, the early rob sonic stuff (when he was with sonic sum and i guess not on def jux), and the early company flow albums were all better than hell's winter

Raggaeton will top hip hop but it will take time, kids are being raised as girls today, Reggaeton is all over the radio , MtV , and everywhere, i hate that but it will come, Rap wont be dead, but it will never be the same, how many great rappers have been out in the past 5 years, think of it, most rappers are singing or doing reggaeton or are one hit wonders

Trust me, im realistic in life, I hate reggaeton but reggaeton is whats slowry taking over the music industry, soon my unborn kids will be dancing to gasolina, Hip Hop is tring to get club freindly, Outkast have club songs, Black Eyed Peas now have a commercial girl singer, Think of it this way, how many great old school rappers are are still around and how rappers are that were decent are still releasing real good music, I listen to rock now cause hip hop is basically garbage.(Old rock or old school rap is better than any new hip pop music put out today) All decent rappers are becoming actors instead of rapping.

BLOODSHED
09-25-2005, 06:32 PM
Yeah a lot of old school rappers went into acting. I guess the sales persuade Cube to do so. But a lot that arent selling and are relatively new are doing the same:Mya, Eve, Lil Kim, Bow Wow.

Dont get me started on the Black Eyed Peas. I hate them more than anybody Ive never met. They are the definition of a sellout. Now they got that girl with no ass in their group singing so theyre selling.

**** reggaeton. I dont know if reggaeton is worst than the "new" rap fans that think Eminem made rap what it is(This is textbook EXIG3). Bull****. Eminem, I wish death upon him. I truly do. He's such an opportunist. Why do you think hes producing Tupac albums and biting him heavily? Street cred. I will never forgive eminem for using the "N word" and then saying it was because of a girlfriend. I also hate the fact that he has this hatred for his mother. Its obvious his mother is not stable. You dont need to talk about killing her and sue her when you know she doesnt have much money. And you dont need to talk about killing your baby's mama. Most rap artists dont mention the people they "kill" by name but Em does. This is straight bull****.

He's hurting rap too. D12. Them *****es sold out rap and there is no one way that one black puppet (Bizarre) in D12 with the shower cap would ever try to launch a rap career with that as his image. He knows with Eminem they need a gimmick and strange is their gimmick. I've never seen a rap video like "Purple Pills".

I dont fault Outkast, they still rap the same as they did 10 years ago. They didnt switch up their flow. I just noticed Andre has gotten weird since the album with the "Rosa Parks" song. I got that album but the titles escaping me.

The thing is Ricans know whats up with rap and they're doing this reggaeton. They should stop this ****. Daddy Yankee is platinum and has been nominated for album of the year (forgot which category).

Will you leave the old school rappers which were good, I cant leave that,

I love the old school, but even the unreleased music by Pac is being disgraced by Afeni, she edits it, she adds new schoolers to guest rap, she puts in beats that do not belong with Pacs lyrics or with Pacs style, For example Still Ballin featuring Trick Daddy, Trick did not even know Pac and their styles are complete opposites.

BLOODSHED
09-25-2005, 06:55 PM
Shes messing it up. Pac would have never worked with Eminem (he was semi-anti white).

Then she got Nas on a Pac song. Pac hated Nas.

Still Ballin used the same sample J Lo used for the remix of the song with Fat Joe.

The mom doesnt know rap but somebody has to tell her shes doin it all wrong.

Once I leave rap, Im done. For good.

Jayz and Russell Simmons are too busy having "hip hop forums" discussing minority voting and other topics they really cant influence.

It would be more beneficial if they gave back to the "hood" they ridicule in their music. Rap is just bull**** and on my iPod I have 127 songs. I would say 10 are rap. And the rest are r&B and some rock.

and to add to the discussion of today's hip hop state and the artists involved, for the artists, this is their job. i don't care who says that they do it for the love of the music, they need to make a living. for anyone who loves what they do, the bonus they get is that they make money. some artists don't even love what they do, they just have skill and are recognized. so for those who are selling out, they know what they have to do to make money, and while it might be an excessive amount of money, they're doin what they have to, to live up to social expectations and to make a living. sucks huh?

and today's state of hip hop? **** it. with Jay-Z trying to start up Def Jam Left (wtf is with the label name?), suburban kids trying to emulate the local radio gangster who hasn't been a gangster in years, and Mannie Fresh leaving Ca$h Money (dude that guy is golden!) i could care less. at least i got David Banner giving the west coast props. i need royce the 5'9" and Ras Kass to go platinum. people want thugs and club bangers. combine them and you got at least 40 million easy. the hip hop crowd needs to watch CB-4 again.
im not saying that isnt a bonus but id like to see more artists make music for the love of it. not just a lil bit clones on the radio all day long.

i have to agree there...
but you get people like common who says hes making "real" music when a) he only hooks up with whosever hot at the moment (neptunes, macy gray, roots, kanye, lauryn hill) and b) who uses a gimmick of creating a positive message in rap cause hip hop doesnt need more guns---well thanks for insulting rap fans. i doubt most rappers have killed anyone ive known to not believe 90% of rap lyrics.

Thing is Common has a lot of respect in the game. I just noticed some magazines diss him cause of his lack of charisma. His charisma aint bothering me, cause Nas can get boring too. Its his double talk about creating real music.

if I were Kanye I wouldnt even want to work with Common. I mean they were both making music outta Chicago and Common only thinks of using kanye after he wins the grammy?

That's an extremely big "if". "If's" can go on all day. Bottom line is, Scarface is top 5 no matter what. You should check that whole Last of A Dying Breed album, we can compare and contrast vs. The Blueprint. It's superior to The Blueprint, like Scarface is superior to Jay-Z.

See I don't REALLY believe that the whole great debate comes down to how much work you've put in. I think it's all about how nice you are on the mic, and by that standard, nobody touches Ra...not Face, not Kane, not LL, not KRS, etc

What i dont get about Banner's albums is how he can be a conscious, spiritual and intelligent mc with complex and catchy beat schemes one minute (take x-ed or ridin' for instance), and then completely flip and put out shallow, bland, commercial crap (the whisper song, for example) the next.

its like he want to be popular and make money, but his heart wants to go the other direction...

That's a fair analysis I guess. The thing that makes this album worthwhile for me is that he plays both sides fairly well (with his mainstream side and social commentary side) and he makes use of good guest spots. He has enough raw, trunk thumping tracks that got him his street cred in the south, while doing a handful of good club bangers as well.

The production is up to par too.

that's funny, cause that's the same formula that Pac used. he'd hit you from one side and then come at you with a 180 switch. that's part of the charisma. and it's funny cause people will jock on Pac all day, but when some other guy tries to do it, he has no cred and is wack. it's funny. people have to be one thing or another and can't be both, cause that's being hypocritical. but fact of the matter, is that everyone is a hypocrite at one point or another. Pac reached a grip of people cause he was able to play both roles masterfully and was accepted as a person instead of a gangster, poet, or rapper.

i'll let david banner do his thing. he's makin his money and is trying to be him. at least he ain't claiming to shoot folks. at least from what i've heard.

i prefer common to anyone in G-Unit. but if anyone were to come at Common again, he might show them the ***** in them too.

and i ain't messing with top 5. too many people got different tastes. my top 5 would have pharoahe monch, talib, mos def, the gza and e-40. but that's my preference. not the usual top 5 you'd expect. so i'll let it be and say people agree to disagree.

oh, and Jay supposedly is gonna be declaring war on a grip of people. it's speculated he's gonna go at the Game for attacking the Young Gunz and Bleek. tho honestly i think Bleek is Jay's secret lover or something. from giving him Dear Summer for his album to push units, to Jay's verse on the Diamonds remix, there's gotta be something else there for Jay to be watchin out for Bleek that much. like Bleek ain't a grown ass man. maybe they're brothers or something. it's just odd to me.

I never said that battlin me, would be impossible
I just think it's highly mother****in improbable

The kickboxer, beatin the **** out *****z proper
I beat 'em till they holla, beat 'em til the cops come
Beatin *****z til they have seizures, beat 'em til they start screamin

Beat 'em til my own hands start bleedin

Yo, yo
Now for the last couple of months, things been real quiet

The drive comes from my lyrics

Vibratin and spinnin, faster than 12-cylinder engines

Fast enough to give your brain an aneurysm
cause you *****z is slower than fat *****es metabolism
The way I rip apart the competition when I be spittin
The name Canibus might as well be Cannibalism
Show me a man that can't feel him
I'll show you a man that'll grab him by the neck

Suffer real "Banned From Television" ****
Drop him off the roof of a buildin and let the news film him
I hop in front of the cameras and tell 'em how I'm feelin
I tell 'em how I feel that hip-hop, should deal wit it
Tell 'em how I'm tired of the state rappers in
Ninety percent of the **** that rappers kick is subject matter-less
Not original, but blasphemous, just a bunch of the same characters
shootin the same videos, it's embarassin
Usin the same formulas to have a hit
Usin the same actors and actresses, same **** different laxative
Face it ***** you wack as **** I'm snatchin your mic
I make you run for your life, chill durin the daylight

Got a infrared lens to test your body's fahrenheit
Wherever you go, I track you through hail, sleet, or snow
I track you til you're seizure grows into a afro

Track you til your shoe soles develop holes

that track is called New World Symphony. it's been out for a while. but, this is the official release. it's a dope track, it's political, lyrically nice, and has a bumping beat. personally i want Pharoahe to call out the world so they can take notice. i really wish those rumors of him signing with Shady were true. too bad that wouldn't have happened. i would've loved to hear him with Stat Quo or riding over a Dre beat.

Alright I can appreciate your thinking that but Common has been around a long time and he has kept it real and not switched it up to achieve success like he could easily do especially with the light shining on Chicago Rappers so brightly the past few years.I don't know I really like his music more and more as I get older...I used to think he sucked but have learned to appreciate him more.I respect your opinion though.

Rap music? words rhyming to a beat. don't matter what the subject matter may be. **** the first commercial rap song was Rapper's Delight. the sugarhill gang wasn't rapping about finding God, but they sure as hell weren't rapping about urban issues either. as artists, rappers are allowed to speak what they want. and if it doesn't fit your definition, that's kool. if you ever wondered about Common, check his diss to Ice Cube. it's called the ***** in Yoo. check that and get back to me and let me know what you think of Common. and yah he may not be like that anymore, but i think he's still nice.

pete rock produced a new ghostface track. i forgot what it's called.

i find the neptunes beats to revolve around the same style. yah they can play instruments and what not, but you know once the bass line hits, that it's a neptune beat. same with Eminem's beats as you can tell by the drums. personally i think that the best beats are the ones where you want to find out who the producer is. 9th wonder has been doing his thing lately. i'd also prefer just blaze, but that's cause i don't mind that sampling.

as far as dre goes, he's a legend. it don't matter if he can't play a keyboard or not, he's done it all and he did it before most producers were making it that big. he was the equivalent of the neptunes.

Hi-tek is also a dope producer and he is part of Dre's hit squad. Scott Storch started off with the Roots and is now a ****in millionaire. Jazzy Jeff's company, a touch of jazz, is making some dope sounds and has some great producers, don't believe me, then check out the brown album remix. Midi Mafia also has a distinct sound that i've liked for awhile.

music is music, sampled or not. well that's my thought. i figure if the MC didn't blow up so big, that turntablism would be a bigger part of hip hop and remixing and sampling would be a lot different, think like on some Invisible Skratch Picklz type ****. oh and to add one more producer to that list, Chops has been doing it for a minute too with some sick sounds.

NERD/Neptunes have made hit after hit.

While Premier makes rap classics. You have to be a rap fan to appreciate Premier's talents. Plus, Im not trying to downgrade Premier, but he hears a song he likes, and scratches the melody. Thats hard in itself, but not as hard making a song with a $400 Yamaha synthesizer like NERD does.

It must come off the top of Pharell's dome when he makes music.

I'm sorry, I think Chad is probably the mastermind behind those two. I know Pharell gets the love, but it seems like he's just the charasmatic one, whereas Chad probably has the good ideas. I may be wrong, but it seems that way to me. I've also heard rumors that it may be the case.

Primo has done work with Mya, Case, Janet, Aliyah, etc...you don't have to strictly be a hip hop head to know his work. The only other people that Pharell does work with is POP stars, so there that goes out the window.

I just know that a lot of times, Premier makes a beat and the rappers he has on it stink it up (Pitch Black). He needs a good rapper/artist on the song for me to really really bump his stuff.

Pharell/Chad can make a hit from a good melody alone (Drop It Like its Hot/Holla Back Girl). Neptunes personally revived Snoops career. I dont think Primo could do that even if he gave his best beat (Hip Hop) to Snoop.

PS: I fault Pharell for biting Curtis Mayfield.

So you downgrade the quality of the beat he makes because of the supposed lack of vocals over that track?

Come on now...

Who gives a **** about mainstream hits. You need to get it out of your head that a top 40 hit = quality. Hollaback Girl was one of the worst, most anoying songs I've ever heard. It was a hit because 13 year old girls ate it up like candy.

I know your point on mainstream hits, but you cant discredit Pharell/Chad's work because of the genre they work with (pop).

I aint downgrading the quality of the track. For example, its just that when I hear "All Real" by Pitch Black I cant go more than a minute because of the rapping and im not about to listen to the instrumental.

A lot of songs by Primer like "rap phenomenon" by biggie is just hard on the ears. Something bout the beat.

Primo is the best HIP HOP producer to ever do it.

I have heard his remixes, but theyre just that. Remixes. Usually not any new words. Just a different beat.
Wow, have you heard the remixes?

I just know that a lot of times, Premier makes a beat and the rappers he has on it stink it up (Pitch Black). He needs a good rapper/artist on the song for me to really really bump his stuff.

Pharell/Chad can make a hit from a good melody alone (Drop It Like its Hot/Holla Back Girl). Neptunes personally revived Snoops career. I dont think Primo could do that even if he gave his best beat (Hip Hop) to Snoop.

PS: I fault Pharell for biting Curtis Mayfield.

Oh yeah...have you ever heard Jeru Tha Damajas "Come Clean"? One of the most infectiously ill hip hop beats ever conceived. He made it from a water drip sample.

When I said Neptunes can make a hit from a melody alone, I meant it could have been anybody on Drop it like its hot or Hollaback girl and it would have been a hit.

False. Very false actually.

You actually think that 13 year old girls would have been eating up Edo G feat. Neptunes "Beautiful"

or

Jean Grae feat. Neptunes "Hollaback Girl"

No...they wouldn't.

I think so.... maybe not 13 year old girls, but it would catch on. I mean people were actually listening to the Clipse... all production.

I would too. It would probably be a good song and would be respected among hip hop fans, but it wouldn't be a mainstream hit like r=b is trying to imply it would.

100 mil to the person who can name the sample used in this song.

It's an old school soul song...the name just slips my mind. I think it may be an Isley bros song.

florida was crazy, i met roy jones. he is a lot smaller than i thought he would be. atmosphere at the fight was insane and even though the fight didnt turn out the way i wanted, i still enjoyed it. roy showed some flashes of his former self but couldnt sustain that for more than a minute at a time. tarver was pretty humble about his win at the post fight interviews and even called roy jones champ while standinp up and clapping.

The Neptunes and Timbaland produce on his new album dont they? Twista first hooked up with Kanye on Kamikaze, right? They're both from Chicago too, and Twista didnt work with Kanye until he made it big.

Yeah, when Kamikaze was about to drop, I was expecting him to be in top form on that Adrenaline Rush type ****. Then I bought that **** cd, and gave it to my EX-girlfriend, that's how wack that album is. The Day After is better, but I wont buy it, I downloaded it. Twista owes me one for that Kamikaze garbage.

With songs that everyone can vibe to like "Go", and smoothed out **** like "Testify" and "They Say"(best song on the album), I dont think it will be dated, I do agree about Kanye though. A lot of his beats have been sounding familiar, not good for someone who has only 2 albums out. I'll bet he reaches out and gets other producers to contribute to his next album in hope of remaining a relevant solo artist.

And Just Blaze did that song on Ye's album with Lupe Fiasco. This sampling **** has gone over board.

I couldnt stand that song or video for "Testify" as the song has the typical Kanye Alvin and the Chipmunks voice. He really needs to spread his wings and try new ****.
