View Full Version : STUPID QUESTION BUT where the heck DO TSYZU AND TRINIDAd get their POWER from?

They seem to have some kind of unnatural power in their punches. When looking at them they don't look like hard hitters but what is it that makes them hit so hard?

Big punchers are born, not made. It's in the legs, it's the way they commit to a punch, it's confidence

True that, they got some eagle eyes too, always seems like they land flush on the chin. At least in Tsyzu and Trinidad's case.

don't want to say about Tito

but with Tsyzu i think he inadvertently answered that question once and Many Pacquio sort of finished the rest of it in a totally unrelated issue.

to me the two things equal great power are
1. accuracy (timing is part of this )
2. Speed

After the Judah fight, KT was asked about the shot that finished the fight, and he said "its not big power but its right timing and accuracy"

but the point is that is exactly where power comes from being very accurate.

Sure i can take a body builder and give him a stationary target to punch and see who puts the most pressure per square inch him or KT (id go with the body builder probably), but give that guy a chance to fight Zab Judah and he will be made to look foolish and even when or better yet if he hits, that "pressure per square inch stuff that they had going in Rocky 4 will mean precisely nothing"

The second part is "speed"

the faster a guy hits the more it will be unexpected and hurt,

that is also why i think that a desperation haymaker that lands doesn't cause too much damage, because the fighter sees it coming from a mile away and braces too well for it,

KT doesn't have slow hands, he may seem plodding and methodical but when he snaps that straight right, its as if he breaks the sound barrier, and that is where fighters underestimate him,

he may not have as fast a body movement as Judha or Spinks, but he throws his punches much better and much faster.

he is a genious in the ring, and he makes up for his less natural physical ability with calculating precision.

by the way
its no coincidence that KT's best weapons are the "straight" punches

hey the shortest distance between two points right :D

i think his point was that tyson looks powerful, tito and KT don't. u expect guys like foreman/tyson/tua to have ko power.

oh got well...if u mean it like that...ok then in the lower weights..true...speed and accuary is what does it...look at mab and manny pacquiao..there skinny but if u get hit clean..its over...i agree with the thoery of speed and accuracy then if were talking about lower weights

I wish I knew. I guess both fighters are born with it?

Born with it definetly it not something you can attain from weights or powders and crap. You can harness it with a good trainer though.

Trinidad..... a combination of Speed and Technique. He appears to have very heavy hands.

Tszyu.... incredible physical strength for a guy his size and suprising hand speed. He appears to have VERY heavy hands as well.

What do you mean by "heavy hands"? They literally weigh more than the average hand? Or the way he punches?

It means what it sounds like. Some people have more heft to their hands than others.

Stance, punch velocity (speed of the punch, e.g., a bullet penetrates an object because of proper velocity), helical movement of the punch as it is about to land (the best ones sort of twist the fist inward right before the punch lands), timing and the punchers' body-weight-behind-the-punch principle: all put together in one fluid motion. These are what I remember trainers tell their wards. :)

Execution is the key, so I've heard it said. :)

I think confidence is something under-spoken about when it comes to power in a punch, if you can see yourself knocking a guy out, you can knock him out..

As far as Tito Trinidad goes, and alot of other power "hookers" the key to it is the rotation you put into the hips, and how quick and far you can **** back the punch and deliver it...If you look at when Hopkins knocked him out, and pause right at the time Hopkins throws the uppercut you see how lightning quick Tito throws the lefthook applying all those principles, Hopkins just beat him to punch..

Holy **** Jack you didn't abuse Tito in your thread. Impossible I can't believe you didn't say something about the hand wraps. :D On the serious side I would really like to know how Trinidad did become such a serious power puncher when he wasn't really known for having much power in the amatuers. In fact I remember a hearing/reading something to the effect that when Tito turned pro he wanted to get more KO's. Does it have to do with training or a natural born ability.

hunger, anger, faith, confidence, it's all relative. Speed and accuracy are the best answer but to tie it all together i'll clairify heavy hands as momentum. speed, accuracy and momentum are biggest factors to a power punch. Some people more naturally back up their punches with the rest of their body and stabilizing muscles of it. The technique of it is not easilly learned i'd gues and that generally all the physics involved in the pursuit of it overwealm our capabilities.

There are so many factors. There have been guys much scrawnier than Tito who hit even harder. Mass certainly plays a role, but I believe that its bone structure and frame size more so than muscle mass. Foreman, Shavers, Baer Dempsey were all pretty big boned guys with large fists. If you have tiny women's hands, your punches just aren't going to have the same impact. It's like comparing a .22 bullet to a .45.

There are freaks of nature out there that can hit unbelievably hard, but they don't have the other neccesary qualities or training to refine that power into something useful for boxing. Who knows, the man with the greatest potential for hitting power could be a 300lb overweight farmer living out in the midwest. He's never boxed before, has no interest in it, so he'll never know.

Good point. Tito especially sometimes looks like he's barely in shape, but then he'll damn near kill a guy with a monster punch in the 11th round.

Some of these guys are just strong. Tsyzu benches over twice his body weight.

Kostya said a statement that straight punches obviously land faster than a hook or any other punch. Thus he must perfect it and put all his power into it. Same with Manny. It's all about how much you believe in a punch and believe what you can do with the punch. Straight left is the quickest way to the enemy, add speed+power to it, and it's a sure win.
