armstrong's defense was good on the inside. he smothered a lot of punches with his shoulders and generally bulled his man around so that he couldn't get his punches off. he looks incredibly strong on tapes. i don't know if he ever fought anyone who could back him up.

Sandy Saddler.

You wouldn't get any real ATG's with no defence at all, you don't really get to that level without soem sort of defence. But there are some who were lacking in traditional defence and instead used smothering tactics or constant rhythmic forward movement to deflect or take the edge off shots, like LaMotta, Marciano, Armstrong etc

None outside of clinching and the occasional parry. Archie Moore wanted to teach him some defense but Saddler wasn't interested. He along with his cousin Dick Saddler weren't interested in teaching George Foreman any defense either.
