View Full Version : Felix Trinidad was an overrated cheater
fisticwarfare 03-01-2010, 04:30 PM His two best wins against Whitaker and DLH are flawed.
Whitaker was old, past his prime and addicted to drugs, when Trinidad fought him. And DLH gave Trinidad a boxing lesson, but wasn't given the decision. Robbery at its finest.
His power wasn't real. His illegal wraps were what gave him power. When he was caught with them and they were removed, Hopkins gave him a good beating. After that, Wright embarrassed him and so did Jones.

gimmeyapudpud 03-01-2010, 06:43 PM If you're going to discredit Trinidad's victory over De La Hoya, then I hope you don't credit De La Hoya for his victory over Ike Quartey.
People always bring up De La Hoya's fight with Whitaker, but in all honestly that was just a really close fight.De La Hoya spent the entire fight infront of Quartey just eating his jab and not doing anything.
We really don't know how long Whitaker was "doing dat crack"
Trinidad was an exciting fighter who's power and accuracy were the best of his generation.

This thread is not about DLH vs Quartey or DLH vs Whitaker. This thread is about Trinidad. And Trinidad was given the gift decision of a lifetime against DLH and a very flawed win over Whitaker.
He was exposed a second time, in a more brutal manner, against Hopkins. And then again against Wright.
Trinidad's power was fake and anyone who doesn't believe that is blinded by favoritism.

ur an idiot first of all it wasnt illegal wraps just the way he wrapped his wasnt legal in ny but was legal in nevada even nazim richardson said it
Nazeem Richardson: Trinidad was legal just not in NY, Margarito had a weapon!
How was Trinidad different than Margarito?
NR: Trinidad was an abrasion against the rules. Margarito downright had a weapon. There is a difference when you say you're playing chess and have your men lined up differently, as opposed to having extra men on the board. Margarito tried to bring extra men. He had a knuckle pad. Margarito had a strip over the back of his hand, around his thumb and wrist. They told me it was because of a previous injury was why they wrapped it that way. One look and you could tell it wasn't right.
Also doesnt matter how far or how far he wasnt into drugs you cant blame that on tito he still whooped whitaker wether you like it or not

It increased his power. Just because it's not against the rules, in certain places, doesn't mean it doesn't do something.

One thing you have to think about though.....if it was only illegal in New York how do we know every other fighter not fighting in NY wasn't wrapping their hands the same way? And if that is the case, why is Trinidad's power punching percentage still higher than most against top fighters?

Bro did you post this thinking people would agree? I agree he got a gift in the DLH fight but the dude's BA.
He's fought everybody and his resume is stacked with quality competition.
DLH
Whitaker
Camacho
Vargas
Wright
Oba Carr
Joppy
Mayorga
Hopkins
Jones (fight was a joke)
What are you trying to prove?

Spare me the laughable excuses.
Are you honestly trying to say that Trinidad should be excused, because every other fighter in the world MIGHT have been doing it, too?
Trinidad was caught and exposed. That's that. If you wanna blame every other fighter in the world for doing it (without proof, of course), you can leave me out of it.

If the Jones fight is a joke, then so is the Whitaker fight.
The man had illegally wrapped hands that gave him more power and people say it's legit. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Are you saying its not a possibility that other fighters have wrapped their hands differently with commissions that would allow them to do so? If its an advantage I have no doubt other fighters had and are still doing it.

Of course it's a possibility. But that shouldn't excuse someone who was actually CAUGHT with it.
By your logic, you're saying that it's okay for a boxer to use steroids, because others might be doing it, too.

That isn't what Im saying at all. You inferred Tito's power came from his hands being wrapped illegally. It was only illegal in NY and the bulk of Trinidads fights were not held there. If it was such an advantage it stands to reason other fighter would be wrapping their hands the same way outside of New York, no? So why didn't their power punch ability increase in comparison to Trinidad?

But you don't have proof that those other fighters wrapped their hands illegally. You do have proof that Trinidad did, though. And that's what matters.

The point is, IT IS NOT ILLEGAL OUTSIDE OF NY. Why wouldn't they wrap their hands differently if it was an advantage and they were allowed to?

First off, how do you know that every other fighter knew about it and did it?
Second, we can't confirm every fighter in the world has done it, because every fighter in the world hasn't been caught. Trinidad was caught, however.
So spare me the excuses of how others might've been doing it too, because it's pathetic. If they did, then shame on them, too.

You seem to be clinging to anything in order to discredit Tito.
Out of 45 fights Trinidad fought 6 in New York. Of those 6 he scored 3 stoppages, 1 UD and lost twice. Before he fought Hop he was 3-0(2) in NY. After Hop he was 1-2(1). But his competition level went up and he was past his best weight and prime years. So while the wraps were illegal in 3 of those fights, it really doesn't seem that advantageous. And besides (maybe) those 3 fights, everything else was legal and on the up and up. He did nothing any other fighter wouldn't be allowed to do.

En-lighten me the procedure that made it illeagal. Explain how he wrapped his hands. Don't explain to me how Hopkins explained it cause he wasn't even in the room and he gave his version of how to illeagaly wrap your hands and then wetting them

What exactly am I clinging to? The fact that he was caught with illegally-wrapped hands? It's a fact.
Before the Hopkins fight, did you ever think that the hand-wraps had something to do with him being undefeated?
In the Hopkins fight (without the illegally-wrapped hands), Trinidad hit him with some pretty good punches and Hopkins acted as if he hadn't been hit at all. Trinidad was exposed, then and there.
I mean.. come'on, man. Trinidad's father said that his hands were wrapped that way for every fight, before the Hopkins one. Meaning that he had a big and (morally) unfair advantage in power against his opponents. Anyone who defends that has something wrong with them.

I wouldn't even entertain that thought since he only had 3 fights in NY before Hop. Troy Waters, a gimme for a fighter like Trinidad. Pea, who was well past his best, and Joppy who was practically shut out by Hop 2 years later. every other fight he had his hands WERE wrapped legally per say of that boxing commission.

Joppy was never knocked out before and it's a big belief that Trinidad ruined him.
Just because a boxing commission doesn't have it against the rules doesn't mean it has no effect. His hand-wraps increased his power and even Trinidad's father/trainer implied that in an interview.
If you lost to Trinidad by knockout and then learned that his hand-wraps increased his power, would you say that your loss to him was completely legit?
JAB5239 03-01-2010, 09:19 PM Joppy was never knocked out before and it's a big belief that Trinidad ruined him.
Joppy had lost before that and had never face a fighter the quality of Trinidad.

If it isn't against the rules it isn't illegal. ANY fighter can do this and I would bet many have. I find it a bit humorous you want to hold every fight in Tito's career in contempt.

I also wonder if Joppy faced a fighter with illegally-wrapped hands, before Trinidad.
He had an unfair advantage over his opponents by increasing the power in his punches by a significant amount and you think it's alright? Wow..
I do hold every fight of his in contempt, the same way I hold all of Margarito's. Yes, there's a separate degree of unfairness between them, but their careers both have question marks over them.
By the way, you still didn't answer my last question:
If you lost to Trinidad by knockout and then learned that his hand-wraps increased his power, would you say that your loss to him was completely legit?
If you were that fighter that lost by knockout, you know that you would say he cheated.
If I were you, I would stop responding. You've dug yourself a hole and showed everyone how biased you are.
fisticwarfare 03-01-2010, 09:31 PM Does fisticwarfare even know how it was wrapped that the called it illeagal?
Actually I do. His father/trainer put tape first, then gauze, then tape, then gauze, and so on. This increases the power in someone's punches by a significant amount. While it may not sound that serious by it's description, it actually is very serious.

Depending on the type of fighter you are, some like more gauze to protect their knuckles, some like less gauze to hit more bearhanded. You are correct in putting tape first on the knucles, that is illeagal in many states. Trinidad folded an extra set of gauze back and forth on the knucles. There were not wet like Hopkins insinuated. It was more done from the the Hopkins camp to get into Tito's head, Hopkins had gotten to his head already by throwing the PR flag on the floor in PR. Make no mistake Hopkins boxing IQ is high in every angle. They made Trinidad wrap twice
BOLLOCKS 03-01-2010, 10:35 PM Both De La Fishnets & Tito are overrated.

Hopkins never said that his hands were wet. Just that if they were wet, they would be even harder.
jrosales13 03-01-2010, 10:48 PM Was Tito wrapping illegal outside of New York? Is really that simple....
DeepSleep 03-02-2010, 12:15 AM There is a lot to the Tito wraps story and it isn't very clear what exactly happened. Tito's wraps were illegal because Felix Sr. applied tape to his knuckles and layered tape and gauze while he wrapped his knuckles; both are illegal in NYSAC rules.
Now alone the advantages of simply adding more tape aren't substantial enough to make a fighters hand turn into a brick but when you dip the tape in ice water the tape will seize and harden. If you have layers of tape and tape on your knuckles when you dip your hand into the ice water the tape will seize up and harden making your wraps harder.
Now there is no question as to whether Tito's wraps had tape on the knuckles and layers of tape, Tito Sr. admits that’s how he wrapped his son’s hands because he believes it provides more protection. The mystery is whether he dipped his hands into ice water to stiffen the tape.
Now again we don’t know much other than Tito’s hands were wrapped with layers of tape which is illegal under NYSAC rules, so it’s very tough to draw a conclusion.
STREET CLEANER 03-02-2010, 12:59 AM Hopkins never said that his hands were wet. Just that if they were wet, they would be even harder.
He was indicating that it was the next step, buy yes he never said it. It is not a huge advantage as you might think. Never wrapped somebodies hand and increased punching power significantly

while i think trinidad is both overrated and a cheater , i disagree with some of your reasoning .
trinidad had many more important and more convincing wins than delahoya and whitaker , whom , you forgot to sate was also far beyond his best weight and by far.
and the jones' loss does not count too much , as jones is naturally so much more muscular , and trinidad also came of a not so short layoff to fight jones.
it was really not a prime trinidad.
and always remember the dirtiest fighter ever is bernard hopkins himslef.
the man who implements Professional Wrestling in boxing to the greatest hights of ugliness.
