View Full Version : Who has performed more upsets in boxing history?
koboy 03-01-2010, 02:02 AM The reason for this thread is because I'm 1-3 against Manny Pacquiao. He's cleaned me out. I am never betting against Manny again.
Name a fighter who's had the most upset wins in boxing history.
Jim Jeffries 03-01-2010, 02:40 AM Good question. I don't know, but I'll start with Bernard Hopkins. He was an underdog against Felix Trinidad, Antonio Tarver, Winky Wright and Kelly Pavlik.

I would have never thought of Bernard but most pick him to lose against Tito and Pavlik. Nice one.

He's not an all time great, but John Ruiz beat many fighters he wasn't supposed to and many people are still upset about it.
One more round 03-01-2010, 05:24 AM Holyfield should get a mention.
The 1st Tyson fight was an epic upset, the odds were against him in the Bowe rematch having just lost to Bowe, he took on Dwight Muhammad Qawi, a seasoned champ, in his 12th fight...
the success of his HW career in general could be counted as one massive upset, seeing as how he was small for the division

seriously , winky wright
Rolling Stone 03-01-2010, 05:55 AM I agree with Hopkins and Ali deserves a mention - Liston and Foreman.

yeah Hopkins win over Wright wasn't even an upset, Hopkins was favourite.....

yet he needed the headbutt to assure a decision win over the former 154 lber at 170.
musiol 03-01-2010, 07:09 AM they were both 5/6 with my bookmaker
bojangles1987 03-01-2010, 07:30 AM Bernard Hopkins definitely. As said already Holyfield was an underdog his entire heavyweight career, Pac always seems to win fights he shouldn't though he'll probably never be an underdog ever again.
hhascup 03-01-2010, 11:26 AM I would have to do some research on this one BUT James J. Braddock was the underdog in consecutive bouts against Corn Griffin, John Henry Lewis, Art Lasky and Max Baer, and he won them all.

I bet on Manny against de la Hoya, Hatton and Cotto. I don't really consider those upsets. It's hard for a great fighter to have many upsets.
In the last 40 years I would have to say Muhammad Ali. He had two major upsets: Liston and Foreman.

he was only underdog against oscar
Jim Jeffries 03-01-2010, 12:41 PM seriously , winky wright
Wright was -150 in that fight, not a huge favorite, but one nonetheless.

This guy is the classic overachiever. A Cruiserweight who arguably could be considered one of the top 10 or 20 greatest heavyweights ever.

Damn, yeah. This guy accomplished more than most "the next great heavyweight" prospects. Don King is the best promoter/magician of all time.
Obama 03-01-2010, 02:09 PM Bob Satterfield deserves a mention.

How about the most that were BIG upsets? And won the World Championship?
Muhammad Ali had 2 very big upsets against fighters(Liston and Forman)who were said to be invinsible and unbeatable.I believe he was a 8-1 underdog against Sonny Liston, and a 5-1 underdog against George Forman.
Both of these upsets were fights in which he won the World Championship.
dlh has performed the most upsets in boxing history. Getting his *ss slammed by SSM (2) PBF and Manny Paquiao
