I have no idea where you heard this from but this is false. I could care less if my ps3 played ps2 games. I gave all my ps2 games to my little cousin like 5-6 years ago.

i played shadow of the collosus on it and it runs good

I only remember playing the last PS2 Socom on PS3. I might've played other PS2 games once or twice but that is the only one I really played. It ran regular it looked a little sharper at 480p but definitely still looked PS2 generation.

I still got all my ps2 games, i mess around n play NFL Street sometimes on my ps3. realy no difference in how it looks. I now have a 42" HDTV so the only difference i see is its bigger display from when i used my 25" tv from the 80's
