Who were the fighters that used this style, and why isn't it used today?

Max Baer
Archie Moore
Ken Norton

It's not used because it's not taught. The gloves are also bigger these days so it's easier to simply use a high guard and block the punches, not deflect them with your shoulders and elbows.

Azumah used it often as well. And George Foreman in his later years.

David Tua is also using it I guess.

I am not a Boxer (not now:)) but what are the advantages of this stance?

I've tried using that defense before in sparring and was just uncomfortable with it. Looking at it it would seem more effective against fighters who threw straight punches instead of looping punches and hooks. Jmo.

Tony Ayala jr would sometimes you the cross arm defence, archie moore was the master of the cross arm defence

The thread is "cross-ARM" not "cross-LEG".

I've seen Miguel Cotto use it, for real brief moments in fights also.... but I can't think of a current fighter that mainly fights out of that stance

If you pivot to catch hooks and bring it down (at least the right arm) to catch uppercuts, it can be effective. Difficult to jab out of though.

I think Foreman was using it because he had Moore in his corner for a while. And it's not like George's defense was impenetrable to begin with.

It's not used today, because it isn't taught, and the reason it isn't taught is because if you used that type of defence in todays amateur system, you would get drilled and lose to everyone, so no kids are coming up using it, so therefore no young pros use it today.

The cross-armed style of defense you see Archie Moore used is only taught for infighting nowadays. The problem with the defense is it is very awkward to punch out of as your arms aren't in a very natural punching position. Also many of the textbook maneuvers that come from it are fundamentally poor in a regular stance and can cause bad habits for an inexperienced fighter, for example a classic maneuver used by folks who fight in a "crab" is that they will slip your jab to the inside(Normally a no-no move) and use their upper arm to pin your power hand to your chest while they either hook to the body or head. If a young fighter tries doing that from a usual modern stance he will eat a full force straight right, so they simply don't teach it very often to fighter's when they are new. It is still taught though for infighting since it is quite effective.

Floyd's defense = run like a b1tch.....or avoid fighting a warm body in the first place.
