View Full Version : Fighters who took severe beatings, but won
JAB5239 02-23-2010, 02:30 AM Who were some fighters who took some severe beatings only to come back and win their fights?
Was there ever a fighter who collapsed after he won a fight from a blood clot?
Clyde Barrow 02-23-2010, 02:33 AM Brewster was destroyed by Wlad, but gutted out a win.
Margarito was never hurt by Cotto, but surely had his career shortened by Cotto's assault.
Chavez likewise didn't get hurt by Meldrick but was largely bludgeoned pillar to post for 9 of 12 rounds before scoring a victory.
Not sure if this meats the criteria of your question but those fights came to mind first.

Nigel Benn when he fought gerald McClellen.
If I remember correctly, Chris Eubank was getting beat pretty bad before getting the KO in Watson II

This fight was specifically on my mind when I made this thread. Only difference is I was thinking if Mel had won, had any other fighter gotten beaten up like that to win. He was clearly winning on points, but he was clearly getting his ass kicked in the process.

Good one.
As for my second question.......Joe Mesi beat Vasilly Jirov while suffering a blood clot. Any others?

Makes you wonder if Watson had not suffered a brain injury during that fight if he would have gone on to have won. As you stated, he was clearly ahead.
PED User 02-23-2010, 02:56 AM The first fight to come to mind was Bowe against Golota. What a moron/choke artist/headcase Golota was.
Frazier and Ali after third first and third fights. Frazier's face was all busted up after the FOTC, and he almost died from blood pressure problems. I can't imagine how badly Ali's body must've felt after the fight in Manila.
Corrales against Castillo. I remember Chico saying a few days later than he didn't watch the fight for awhile because he was so high on pain-killers, and that he needed his wife to bathe him. That "pain for love" tattoo he had was appropriate, he put himself through hell in that fight.

PED User 02-23-2010, 03:01 AM Archie Moore got knocked down 4 times against Yvon Durelle and won. That's one of the greatest fights ever IMO.
David Izon was getting the hell beaten out of him by Derrick Jefferson. I mean it was so bad that even Larry Merchant was calling for a stoppage. Suddenly, Jefferson runs out of gas, and Izon stops him.

Frazier won FOTC but was nearly beaten to death, his head was nearly twice its normal size and his body was black & blue, Frazier had to be lifted into a bath of ice-cubes by 4 guys `3hrs in the tub 3hrs out`for 48hrs, he then lapsed into a coma for 7 days and spent a month in the hospital due to severely high blood pressure.. more punches was thrown in FOTC than any other fight in boxing history... Smokin Joe Frazier was a true ATG and real tough-guy.
Sugarj 02-23-2010, 07:18 AM Totally agree about Frazier being a true tough guy!
I've never read that Frazier went into a coma though for a week, is that true? I'm suprised he was licensed again if that is true, although its not exactly a blood clot.
As for the most punches thrown in any fight in boxing history. I wasn't aware that Ali Frazier 1 had that accolade, surely the lower weight divisions had fights with higher punch counts.
I thought the Thriller in Manilla had more.......but I guess that had one fewer round. I seem to remember Tua vs Ibeabuchi had quite a high punch count over 12 rounds.
mickey malone 02-23-2010, 07:52 AM Foreman Stewart.. Can't believe that went the distance.. Foreman's head was nearly twice it's normal size, but the fight wasn't stopped, and he managed to grind out a DC..
Dynamite Kid 02-23-2010, 07:56 AM Iran Barkley vs Tommy Hearns, some of those body shots Hearns was landing were sickening.

read the book "Ghosts of Manilla - Mark Kram"
geribeetus 02-23-2010, 09:18 AM Frazier won FOTC but was nearly beaten to death, his head was nearly twice its normal size and his body was black & blue, Frazier had to be lifted into a bath of ice-cubes by 4 guys `3hrs in the tub 3hrs out`for 48hrs, he then lapsed into a coma for 7 days and spent a month in the hospital due to severely high blood pressure.. more punches was thrown in FOTC than any other fight in boxing history... actually tua-ibeabuchi broke the heavyweight record. which is impressive since it was 3 rounds shorter than fotc.
frazier truly did have a lion's heart. i think fotc took his chin from him. maybe foreman always would've killed him, but after '71 he never had a chance.
Sugarj 02-23-2010, 09:24 AM Yea, I thought Tua vs Ibeabuchi had grabbed that honour, but I wasn't too confident.
Oh and thanks Sonnyboyx. Funnily enough I own that book and read it about seven or eight years ago. Kram clearly didn't like Ali much! I didn't remember it saying about Frazier being in a coma, but hell it was a few years ago. I may well give it another whirl.

yeah it may not be as significant as frazier-ali but that fight was a true display of balls. neither guy is exactly pernell whitaker either. both landed bombs all night.
oldgringo 02-23-2010, 12:47 PM The first fight that comes to mind is Castro/Jackson I. Castro was cut, swollen, bleeding and tired...then Jackson hurt him badly with a straight left hand. When it looks like there's nothing left for Castro to do but fall over, he lands a monstrous left hook and flattens Jackson. Jackson managed to get up a couple of times after that but was effectively done from the single left hand. Crazy.
Bright-Eyes 02-23-2010, 01:10 PM Matthew Saad Muhammad until he run into Qawi.
tysonali 02-23-2010, 01:23 PM Last November, Z Gorres won a decision over Luis Melendez and then collapsed after the fight was over. There was a blood clot in his brain.
He was in critical condition, but now he's doing better. According to news reports, should be able to fully recover and live a normal life again.
EzzardFan 02-23-2010, 01:53 PM Archie Moore got knocked down 4 times against Yvon Durelle and won. That's one of the greatest fights ever IMO.
I second that. Great fight.
TBear 02-23-2010, 03:36 PM Michael Moorer was putting a beating on Foreman up til the final round. Seeing Foreman slowly stagger back to his corner was sad and I had to wonder how long they were going to let it continue.

Kevin Kelley against Derrick Gainer in their first fight. They were going to stop it until he pulled out a dramatic one punch ko. Same for Arturo Gatti against Wilson Rodriguez and Mike Weaver vs. John Tate.
Epic_Punch 02-23-2010, 05:53 PM Gatti - Ward 1 ????
Both guys took a lot of punishment in there. Ward got the decision but everybody thinks a draw would have probably been a better decision.
mhager91490 02-23-2010, 08:30 PM Kevin Kelley against Derrick Gainer in their first fight. They were going to stop it until he pulled out a dramatic one punch ko. Same for Arturo Gatti against Wilson Rodriguez and Mike Weaver vs. John Tate.
I remember in the Kelley-Gainer fight Kevin took a bad beating. That punch or thumb he got hit with was sick, I don't think I've ever seen an eye close that fast before.
mhager91490 02-23-2010, 08:36 PM Danny Lopez in his fight with Juan Malvarez was getting hit with everything thrown in his direction before pulling a big time one punch KO.
Micheal Grant was also getting pounded by Andrew Golata before landing some bombs of his own and getting Golata to quit. Tommy Morrison's bout with Joe Hipp is also worth a mention, had his jaw and both his hands broken in that bout.
Nick Fury 02-23-2010, 11:09 PM Arthur Abraham vs Edison Miranda I is a good one.
Emon723 02-23-2010, 11:45 PM Ray Mercer against Bert Cooper, Ray won but Cooper left his face bloodied and swollen.
mhager91490 02-24-2010, 12:28 AM Muangchai Kitikasem took some crazy punishment and was down three times against Jung-Koo Chang but his power came through in the twelfth when he KO'd Chang.
Wilfredo Gomez got his eyes bloodied and swollen up against Pintor an Ko'd the iron-chinned Mexican in the 13th.

Rogers Mtagwa against Tomas Villa. Got the ****e kicked out of him before pulling it out in the last round and looked horrible after the fight. I honestly thought that he was going to have something wrong with him after that one.
BennyST 02-24-2010, 03:05 AM The first fight that comes to mind is Castro/Jackson I. Castro was cut, swollen, bleeding and tired...then Jackson hurt him badly with a straight left hand. Ahhh yes! That fight was brutal. The cut over Castro's eye was bad enough to have the fight stopped rounds earlier than it did eventually stop, though by Castro's hook and not the ref.
I can't ever remember Castro being hurt like that either. Numerous times throughout that fight he looked bad enough to go down and out.

Saad Muhammad in both of his fights against Marvin Johnson and his 1980 FOTY against Yaqui Lopez. He had no business recuperating and coming back to win by ko in all three fights. The Ultimate Warrior

Carl Thompson against David Haye and both fights against Eubank. Took an incredible amount of punishment and came back to win both fights.
Ringthebell 02-25-2010, 08:19 AM Bobby Chacon-Boza Edwards
Almost any Bazooka Limon fight.
The_Demon 02-25-2010, 09:38 AM margarito took quite a lot of punishment against cotto before coming on strong
andrade-bute 1 aswell.i know he didnt get the W due to some bad reffing but he definitly should have
TOBYLEE1 02-25-2010, 01:50 PM There are a lot of good mentions here, especially that Castro/Jackson. Castro kept wipping the blood of his eye with the ref's shirt sleeve.
Mickey Ward vs Alfonso Sanchez Ward was beat and lost every round including a knockdown on the 5. He eventually connects a left hook to the body and eventually KO's Sanches
#1Assassin 02-25-2010, 02:08 PM lots of good choices so far.
one that hasnt been mentioned yet is hagler-mugabi. that fight was a war, and mugabi was one of the heardest punchers ever. he caught hagler with some shots that wouldve put an elephant down, they went at it round after round until mugabi just broke down. hagler took a beating that night for sure.
mcclellan-jackson I is another one. some ppl dont know mcclellan was brain damaged in that fight, he was just finished of so to speak in the benn fight. thats another example of two brutal punchers going at it, jackson caught gerald with some shots that would put a normal man down for the weekend, gerald was beaten up, tired and hurt and then out of nowhere flattened jackson with one of the nastiest combinations i ever seen. u can see geralds reaction after dropping jackson, and after the fight was over he cried out of happiness. his head was all lumpy after teh fight.
sikwatee 02-25-2010, 02:14 PM Ali-Frazier 3.
patscorpio 02-26-2010, 10:13 AM david izon vs derrick jefferson - jefferson hands out what is in hindsight a career ending beating to izon however he threw so many punches that jefferson gassed out big time and izon stops him
Napalm Death 02-26-2010, 04:35 PM Carl thompson vs Sebastian Rothman
