View Full Version : Running?
danny13 02-20-2010, 06:35 PM I will admit it, I am not the best at doing roadwork. Honestly, I really dislike it...boring. However, I can jump rope forever and do so quite intensely. Do you guys think it is enough just to jump rope. I can jump 12 three minute rounds straight with no problem. Is that enough? Or should I be running?
Even though I can jump rope alot, my shoulders and arms do get tired...Help!
Tu Pai 02-20-2010, 06:42 PM are you an am fighter? If you are and your not having trouble making weight I dont see a problem. Some sprints might not hurt.
danny13 02-20-2010, 06:46 PM Yes, I am an amateur...Believe it or not I would like to get down in weight as well. I would like to work it down to 152. I am walking around at like 165-167. I am trying to get in better shape and think that more roadwork is neccessary. What do you think?
Tu Pai 02-20-2010, 07:01 PM I never done 12x3 mins rds of skipping so I'm not sure how that compares to a regular 3 or 4 mile run. If you are looking to get down in weight, long runs will help, if you are looking for conditioning, intervals.
One more round 02-20-2010, 07:47 PM You have to run. Nothing beats running.
I do intense sprints/interval type training twice a week, and then regular runs over varying distances two to three more times a week.
Clegg 02-20-2010, 09:15 PM Have you tried running with an MP3 player? That should help to make it less boring.
How are your energy levels during sparring/fights? If skipping and other exercises are working well enough that your boxing stamina is good then I wouldn't worry too much about running if you're doing fine without it.
Walt Liquor 02-20-2010, 09:54 PM I hate running too. Do you play basketball? It's good for your footwork and your wind cuz it's interval training and has jumping.
If you don't get tired in the ring it doesn't really matter, but it's good to change up your workouts.
If I used my iPod I don't mind knocking out 4-5 miles. I'll do it for a couple weeks, then play ball for a few weeks.
southpaw2884 02-20-2010, 11:26 PM i run like 5 days a week... i think of all my **** like its a game.. that i have to win if i dont run i feel wack and **** or like if i dont train.. i try to make like a competiton wit myself if that makes sense
Joey Giardello 02-20-2010, 11:39 PM does running make your legs stronger?

Yes, in my experience.

cos i have heard it can make them weak?
One more round 02-21-2010, 12:46 AM cos i have heard it can make them weak?
It can damage and wear down your joints, but it won't make the muscles weaker.
Clegg 02-21-2010, 01:08 AM cos i have heard it can make them weak?
My joints aren't that good due to weight lifting a few years back, but they feel better the more I run.
The first time I went running a couple of years ago, I was stupid enough to do it on concrete, and my knee hurt for about a week afterwards. Since then I always run on a football field near my house and my legs feel absolutley fine.
I also cycle a lot, but IMO running is superior because you can control how much you do and the pace. When I go cycling I have to stop at traffic lights, look out for traffic etc. and so it's a lot more start-stop rather than continuous or at my own pace.
If you start running, you should feel your legs adapt a bit more each time, and the soreness will be less each time, because your legs are strengthening and getting used to the exercise.
iceman1 02-21-2010, 10:41 AM running with mp3 player is the one
can't beat that, get the right soundtrack for your run though :)
see im not to great @ jump rope but i can run for sure
RUN FORREST RUN
Squirrel 02-21-2010, 11:08 AM If you feel that at present your stamina isn't an issue/problem, then keep doing what you're doing.
HOWEVER, keep pushing yourself at it, you gotta get better and better, no matter how comfortable you feel you are at present.
I would advise mixing sprint/HIIT training in there, can't beat that. Though it is a killer!
YoungJab 02-21-2010, 04:21 PM HIIT is great!
Chip2006uk 02-21-2010, 04:26 PM If you live in a block of flats or some highrise type of building you should do stair sprints, basically run up as many set of stairs as you can and then go back down and do it again.
Its iced over outside so I cant run today but instead Ive been doing stair sprints, and I swear it works your legs like nothing else, also less damaging to the joints compared to running on concrete.
iceman1 02-21-2010, 06:35 PM stair sprints
oh my gosh thats amazing, but at the same time you wont feel like doing it for weeks
but it really works you :)
