I think id have to go with Kostya Tzu. he totally surprised me with that fight against mitchell. So relaxed and determined it made me jealous!

Easily...Diego Corrales.

Had a questionable year of return (after two years out) in 2003.
Beating easy guys, than getting battered in a war towards the end.

He regrouped in 2004. Fighting an intelligent fight against the guy he warred with....& then scoring a dramatic KO over a very difficult foe, in one of the year's best matchups.

Forgot about Corrales. His victory over Freitas was definitely impressive
good pick :)

I'd say Barrera, Tszyu and Trinidad. I don't know how anyone can be impressed with Corrales victory over Frietas. He couldn't get to Frietas until Frietas tired and got caught. It was a good win but not an impressive win.

Kostya really impressed me by looking better than ever after 2 years of not fighting.

Barrera because he proved he can come off of a devastating loss and still beat the best.

Corrales because he was able to turn it around this year and give great fights.......and win them.

Tito, not because he looked that great in his win against Mayo....he didn't, but because he makes things interesting in the middleweight division again. Hat off to him for coming back, but he has work to do, and I'll enjoy watching him do it.

I think you & I have covered this territory before, but....

Diego Corrales is the type of fighter/puncher, who will force a foe to fight in such a manner.
The only way Freitas could survive, was to move incessantly. This incessant movement caused Freitas to tire a bit.
Tell me....was Freitas floundering around the ring right before Corrales started coming on ? No, he just was a bit too tired to keep moving like a mad man.
Give Corrales credit for IMMEDIATELY taking over the fight, once the opportunity presented itself.
Give him credit for not getting frustrated, & for easily brushing off those pretty big right hands.

Corrales because he won two fights i didn't think he would

thats why he is probably my fighter of the year.

Hopkins still does'nt break a sweat beating anybody < 160. That of course still includes Trinidad.

He fought two decent fighters/ worthy opponents, and easily handled them.

I did give him credit by saying it was good win but I feel it wasn't an impressive victory. He looked like the ordinary Diego Corrales not the Corrales that used the jab and was a more complete fighter when he faced Casamayor in the rematch which I felt he lost. If Corrales was cutting off the ring and doing something instead of just following and waiting he would get much more credit from me. He didn't even attempt to cut the ring off or use his jab which would of made the fight easier for him. It was what he wasn't doing that made the fight difficult for him and for that I can't say it was an impressive victory. A good victory? Yes.

Don't get me wrong....I'm a huge Hopkins fan..

But, I think his challengers this year sucked.

Allen ? No way.

Oscar LOST his one & only fight at 160 (to Sturm).
Hopkins beating him was a formality to those with a grip on reality.

NOBODY looks good against someone who moves that much.
Cutting off the ring, & using the jab are boxing cliches that don't always pan out...& are certainly easier said than done.

I truly believe Corrales knew he could wait Freitas out, because no one can sustain that for very long...& stepped on the gas at the right time.

IMO.....You drop a guy three times, with BEAUTIFUL power shots....& then he quits..then you are DAMN impressive.

mic573
12-01-2004, 03:27 PM
They are probably cliches because nearly every fighter who fights the style Corrales uses doesn't know how to do it anymore. I wasn't impressed with the win but glad that he did win because I thought he would give Casamayor the rubbermatch.

So...you're less impressed by Corrales catching up to a running Freitas....than you are by Tszyu KOing a weak-chinned, mediocre-punching fighter who stood right in front of him ?

Corrales could of done more in the fight than he did. That's what makes me less impressed with his win over Frietas. What would of happened if Frietas didn't tire down the stretch? A fighter can't always depend on that. With Tszyu it's probably just because I didn't expect him to come in the fight and run through Mitchell the way he did.

Tzyu surprised mitchell, mitchell was lookin at a more relaxed easy going fight, but tzyu was more agressive then he had expected, thats wat impressed me. but both of you have some good points.

Tito probably impressed me the most. Up until the fight people were 50/50 on who would win. But the thing thats inpressive is not the win as much as the connect %. I mean didnt he land just about over 60% in every catagory?
