View Full Version : Hatton vs Augstus in Germany
This is the perfect fight for Hatton. This fight would make Hatton a star with the hard core US boxing fans without even taking on one of the top guys. I think you can throw Augustus record out in this one. He will know this is his shot for the big times. He would be so focus for this fight. I could see the crowd going crazy for Hatton and Augustus loving every second of it. I think he would feed off the crowd rooting against him and start scoring and dancing and smiling. This one would have fight of the year written all over it. I think Augustus will be showing Hatton up but would end up clowning around on lose on the scorcards. Only a dream fight though. Theres nothing to gain for Hatton besides the respect of the US fans, but there everything to lose.
WillieW 12-01-2004, 07:03 AM Actually, yes this would be a good match-up. But it would never happen for a few reasons.
Warren would never let Hatton in with a guy with that kind of record. It looks bad.
Warren would not want to risk Hatton being in with a journeyman that has a very real chance at the upset. A motivated Augustus can win.
This would be a fun one to watch, but unrealistic to think it would happen.
According the the front of the site, Hatton is signing to fight KT, using Augustus as a warm up is very dangerous.
Remember Vilches?, he was going to get his shot at Mitchel and used Augustus as a tune up.......Vilches was stopped in five.
Another thing, I think Augustus retired.........but that could be rumor.
grayfist 12-01-2004, 07:43 AM Augustus is a victim of Irish Micky Ward. He was floored in 2001 in the 9th by Ward who went on to win by UD10 in a fight that THE RING (magazine) dubbed FIGHT OF THE YEAR 2001.
His last fight was June this year. He lost (SD10) to Courtney Burton (Note: Agustus was born Emanuel Burton. I don't know if they're related) after having been penalized a point for spinning out of a clinch in the 8th round.
He has won only two of his last ten fights and managed two draws. His victories were over Trujillo and Vilches; the latter was stopped due to cuts suffered by Vilches. Augustus took the Vilches fight on two days notice.
His KO rate is less than 50%: of his 29 wins, he KOd 14 foes. He has 24 losses-- just 5 short of his total wins. But of all those losses, he was stopped only three times: by Pretty Boy Floyd (TKO--Augustus' cornerman climbed the ring to implore the ref to stop the fight in October 2000), Allan Vester (in Denmark, 1999, KO12) and Jesus Chavez (In Forthworth, 1995, KO7)
He stands 5'6 and is 29 years old.
Would he be tough test for Hatton?
Another question: would Hatton improve his stature in the eyes of fans (internationally) if he beats an Augustus?
Third question: would it help sell tickets for a Tszyu-Hatton meeting?
PRboxingfan 12-01-2004, 12:09 PM I would side with Emmanuel Augustus on this one. I think Ricky would make a mistake to climb into the ring with him. Remember what he did to Trujillo? He won that fight against Burton (Courtney) but was robbed in the worst way! He was also a pot-head but he says he stopped smoking. He would've lost the fight to Burton anyway because he tested positive after the fight.
Anywho, Augustus > Ricky in a war!
PacKillsMorales 12-01-2004, 12:22 PM if augustus comes in focused for this fight he
should be able to beat ahtton...hes slick but
likes to showboat.

No dispute there, it was a fun fight to watch, not classic boxing, but fun.

A fight most who saw it (I did) had Augustus clearly....easily winning. He was robbed, as he has been many times in the past.
He has won only two of his last ten fights and managed two draws. His victories were over Trujillo and Vilches; the latter was stopped due to cuts suffered by Vilches. Augustus took the Vilches fight on two days notice.
He made a good prospect Trujillo look amaturish, and was clearly outclassing Vilches before the stoppage.

No dispute there, Augustus is what he is, a journeyman.
He stands 5'6 and is 29 years old.
Would he be tough test for Hatton?
A resounding yes. He is a good test for anyone. An interested Augustus can give a great fight.
Another question: would Hatton improve his stature in the eyes of fans (internationally) if he beats an Augustus?
Of course not, this was one of my points. His fans that fill the MEN arena want to see an oponent with a winning record. But to people who know boxing, a win against Augustus is better than 85% of the opponents he has faced in the past.
Third question: would it help sell tickets for a Tszyu-Hatton meeting?
Again, no. That was never the point. What myself and the original poster were simply saying is that it would be a good fight. It would never happen, but if it did, it would be a good one....based on styles.
Does this clear things up?
Mikie 12-01-2004, 12:51 PM This a very dangerous fight with the realization that hatton could lose.
Soundtraveler 12-01-2004, 12:58 PM I'll go with my buddy Emanual Augustus Burton on this one, I have a hunch he could pull off the upset and finally get one of the alphabet titles at the same time!
Tyson'scolon 12-01-2004, 01:00 PM I heard that Agustus had signed with Lou DiBella.

I chatted with August on ********** a few weeks back and he said that he's preparing for a fight in late December. I think that horrible "loss" to Burton really brought his spirits down.

Good to hear. Augustus is a fun guy to watch. Thanks for the info.
PRboxingfan 12-01-2004, 03:15 PM Augustus is the man. I don't care what anyone says, when he is focused he has the skills to beat just about anyone at 140 including KZ, Cotto, Mayweather, Hatton, and Harris. He has a chance because he is sooooo good at what he does yet he loses interest and clowns around. He said in an interview that now he was serious about boxing and had even given up smoking weed. He also takes most of his fights on less than two weeks notice so is at a serious disadvantage.
grayfist 12-01-2004, 10:06 PM Does this clear things up?I noticed you agreed with most of the things, I said. So, what is there left to clear up?!!!!
If you notice, I didn't take any side in the Burton (aka, Augustus)- Burton fight. I merely narrated that Augustus was deducted a point, and the reason for such a deduction. So, what got your hackles up? Because I didn't know they were not relatives?!
Re: Vilches, I said so on the post that Augustus took the fight on two days notice and yet, won! One of the two victories he had in ten fights. And, I repeat, he had two draws in those ten fights. I didn't state the obvious: he lost 6! You'd rather that I did?
I put it in my post, likewise, that Augustus was stopped only three times: once by TKO (Floydd), and twice by KO (Vester and JChavez). Would you rather that I added that "he's durable"? I allowed the facts to speak for themselves. I see that you're not arguing against any of the facts!
Your answers to all my questions, were the very answers that were obviously begged by those questions! So...?
If, in your eyes and others', Augustus is better than most of those Hatton has ever faced in the past, doesn't that speak volumes of both Hatton and the quality of Augustus? You say a win against Augustus is better than 85% of those over previous Hatton opponents? Okay. But who belong to the remaining 15% who are equal or better than Augustus? Tackie? Vince Phillips? McGee? Kripalov? Hutchinson? Pedersen? Stephen Smith? Hatton met all of them and remains without a single loss. Remember?
I never called Augustus a journeyman. You did. Shows me how high a regard you have for him.
If Augustus hasn't done much to his career, why look at me? Look at Augustus! Shouldn't you? Chat him up through the web and tell him your thoughts! If you want to help him, you sure are looking the wrong way!!! ;)

I think Augustus would box circles around him.
FUBAR 12-02-2004, 01:07 AM Emmanuel Augustus is ****ing great and a focused Augustus can give anyone trouble. His record is a resume of fighting the cream of the crop, and damned if he hasn't been robbed of a few decisions throughout his career.
I always like watching him fight, and I could definitely see him giving Hatton some trouble.

i'm a big fan of augustus, too. i think he'll beat hatton as long as he doesn't piss off the judges again
