What's new?

It shows the command wheel for followers, with 8 commands: toggle melee/ranged, open inventory, toggle stay close/keep distance, back up, toggle aggressive/passive AI, use stimpack, toggle wait here/follow me, return to normal dialogue.

Scripting is wittier, characters more distinct. Example from vigour test word association: mother-human shield.

Opening inventory consists of a kit from the doc, adapted to your starting stats (like Fallout 1).

The Nevada area is less affected by the nuclear war, so it has plant life, relatively unspoiled houses, and in visual presentation has saturated colours and a bright sky.

There's a tutorial (led by a character named Sunny who looks a lot like Moira Brown), but unlike Fallout 3, it's optional, so you can hit the open game in 5 minutes from starting.

NCR and Caesar's Legion are the confirmed faction, article assumes Brotherhood of Steel will be in but they weren't not mentioned in the presentation.

"In New Vegas it's all about the player examining the ideologies of the various groups that are controlling the area and supporting one over the others," explains Sawyer. "Each of the ideologies will have something good that you can relate to, but will also have massive flaws."

When asked about PS3's Fallout 3 being inferior to the others and if New Vegas will do better, Obsidian devs make no promises but indicate it was a learning process and they're working with all 3 platforms and all have problems.

The New Vegas strip is still in construction but will have gambling, variety shows and concerts.

Electrical power is key in the faction struggle.

Radiation is still a problem, there's a nuclear test site to explore north of New Vegas.

The soundtrack will blend "Rat Pack style tunes with more Western numbers".

New Vegas doesn't tell a single-player story, but weaves decision into the gameworld and gives you greater power to influence things than Fallout 3 did.

On top of adding back in geckos, New Vegas has a whole new type of animal: mutated mountain rams called Big Horners.

February 16, 2010 - The USA Today is running a little story on Fallout: New Vegas which contains some new extra snippets of info on the upcoming role-playing game. From the little information given, it doesn't sound like Fallout: New Vegas will break the mold and be a drastically different game from Fallout 3, but that doesn't mean changes are not in store.

Rather than beginning with a nameless survivor in a vault, New Vegas begins with a bang. According to USA Today, it starts with your character being shot and left for dead in the middle of the desert, forever unable to complete his delivery mission. Thankfully, a robot (seen in the teaser trailer) digs you out and takes you to Doc Mitchell to be patched up. There you'll be able to customize your character in a way that sounds similar to Fallout 3.

Once ready, you'll be able to explore the area around New Vegas. The game takes place several years after the events of Fallout 3, but that storyline does not continue in New Vegas. Pete Hines, VP of Marketing for Bethesda, told USA Today, "Vegas is up and running. It is not a ghost town. It still exists and thrives. There are casinos, and you can go down onto the Strip. It will have a very different feel from that standpoint."

The area to explore is roughly the same size as what you got in Fallout 3 and Bethesda is promising that it will take hundreds of hours to explore.

It looks very good, you can now perform "special attacks" in V.A.T.S, and some of the members on this team are like ATG dialogue writers, so the characters and dialogue should be more interesting than fallout 3 imo.

Information from a 10-page Fallout: New Vegas preview in the German PC Games magazine, courtesy of Rootmars:

* Opening sequence: Courier is executed with a headshot. No ambush.
* Character look creation: Mitchell holds a mirror in front of your face "I hope I put you back together properly so you recognize yourself."
* Character creation: G.O.A.T. is replaced with a psychoanalysis test.
* Weapons: picture of a hunting rifle included. Available modifications are scope, larger magazine and a 3rd one for faster load between shots.
* Weapons: picture of a normal and a unique 9mm Pistol. Shown mods: scope and magazine enlargement. One gun shown with both scope and enlarged magazine.
* Weapons: The unique pistol has a unique skin, engravings and a picture of Virgin Mary on the grip. This could mean that every unique weapon has its own skin. "These rare guns not only look unique, but have unique properties."
* Weapons: Concept art of a guy in the trenchoat from the teaser wielding a Fallout 3-style minigun (It's a little bit smaller though)
* Goodsprings: When you leave the Powder Ganger Quest unsolved, you'll encounter them later when they are more powerful.
* Goodsprings: You can convince Mayor Trudi to ambush the Powder Gangers with a sufficient sneak skill.
* Some choices you make during the game reveal their consequences far later.
* Some NPC companions will have their own quests too, not only Raul.
* Radar: A new yellow bar for companions is added by Obsidian.
* "Caps" are mentioned as currency, not poker chips or dollars.
* Hint that weapon modifications can be found in the wastes. (May be speculation)
* Some statements hint that the NCR and the Brotherhood of Steel somehow work together - you easily gain access to Helios 1 by having a good reputation with NCR and BOS
* Dialogue with Fantastic in Helios 1 can be influenced with a high barter skill.
* Game world will be as big as the one from Fallout 3.
* Chris Avellone on game development: "We are currently working on the dialogues and places. The rest looks pretty good for now."

I wasn't really a huge fan of fallout 3, it was good but I "only" managed to do about 30 hours worth of gameplay before getting bored the story was good but I found the side missions less than thrilling (personally) and having put over 200+ hours in oblivion fallout was too similar for me to really invest in.

I might pick up new vegas eventually but it's not on my radar for now.

Main story in oblivion sucked ass out of a straw. Fallout 3 had a great main story, how did you like the tranquility lane getting to be a kid with a slasher mask killing everybody for the hell of it :D

Loved Oblivion but doesn't come close to Fallout 3, the armors in oblivion were nasty too. some green nasty frog like light armor WTF? You should get out and explorer, great side missions. Get all the bobbleheads and unique weapons, you'll see som great gameplay also do all the major sidequest. Then you'll also hear 3 dawg on the radio comment on it depending on how you choose to do the missions.

As said, I'm seriously hyped about New Vegas, they got BIG shoes to fill.

Yeah, something like that. I like Daedric though, that armor kick ass. Only thing I don't like is how common it is. Kinda take my advantage away on the higher difficulty. Usually I would just get 100% camouflage and I would rape anybody on the highest difficulty :lol1: Loved the side missions the world ESPECIALLY shivering isles! The main story however bored the **** out of me.

Go fetch this from a cave, go into this oblivion gate, go talk to this town so that they can be your ally, go fetch this for'em in a cave, go to another oblivion gate.

I do hear they're planning on making Oblivion V :D Gonna be epic..!

We've already seen the (pretty bad) preview of Fallout: New Vegas from OXM UK. Fortunately, its US counterpart is much better written. Most of the info is old, but here's some new stuff:

* Character creation is virtually identical to Fallout 3, with cosmetic changes like the Gene Projector being replaced by ReflectionTM, "You're SPECIAL!" by Vit-o-Matic machine and GOAT by a psychological test
* The local super mutants are pretty tough and will keep you from wandering aimlessly in the early portions of the game - they tend to be tougher even than deathclaws
* Sunny Smiles' dog is named Cheyenne. They'll assist you with the Powder Gangers in the Ghost Town Firefight quest if you help her kill some geckos.
* The Varmint Rifle is a low-power .22 that does significant damage to limbs and has a high critical bonus
* If your Barter skill is high enough, Chet the shopkeeper give you the 9-Iron golf club and some weapon mods
* Every skill will have use in conversations at various points
* Each firearm has a maximum of three modification slots. Once you affix a mod to a gun, it's permanent. Hunting Rifle modification examples given are scope, custom action and extended clip.
* Temporary followers, like the Goodsprings folks that can help you defeat the Powder Gangers, will also be controlled through the companion wheel
* Concept art of Hoover Dam and screenshots of the Black Mountain radio tower and the character standing inside the mouth of Dinky the Dinosaur shown
* With high local reputation at Goodsprings, you'll get a free bed to sleep in and a discount at the store
* Neil, a super mutant who hates Tabitha, can help you storm the mountain
* Tabitha is actually a male super mutant gone completely insane
* "Skill magazines" you find in New Vegas will only temporarily boost your skills
* There's a rollercoaster in Primm
* The combat gameplay was tweaked to be more first-person-shootery

Videogameszone.de has interviewed Obsidian's Chris Avellone about Fallout: New Vegas. Here's a translated excerpt:
"In New Vegas we put more emphasis on interaction with the various factions. Therefore, there are countless ways to mess up with a group, or instead ingratiate yourself with them. We also added customizable weapons, a more sophisticated followers system and new dialog options," responds Chris Avellone, Creative Director at Obsidian Entertainment, to our question, what most distinguishes Fallout: New Vegas from Fallout 3. He adds that the various characters would also respond differently to actions of the player. "Of course there are situations in which the player can tell in an instant if he screwed up, but sometimes you can only notice the consequences hours later. Our dialogue system functions similar to that," says Avellone. However, mistakes can be fixed later in the game. "At a later point, when you have improved a skill or stat, with which you can suck up, you can try your luck with them," concludes Avellone.

Bethesda Softworks announces premium bundle for consoles and PC including illustrated playing cards, poker chips, graphic novel, and "making of" DVD for Obsidian-developed RPG spin-off.

Even in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, people will still have a need for fun and games. Bethesda Softworks today announced its collector's edition of Fallout: New Vegas, and the premium packed-in bonuses are all about providing just such diversions.

The only reason Vegas wasn't nuked is because it already resembled a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

To start with, the bundle will include Fallout-branded poker chips and playing cards. The "Lucky 7" chips will be themed around various in-game casinos (with an additional platinum "Lucky 38" chip), while the deck of playing cards will feature illustrations of different characters and factions found in New Vegas. When players tire of cards, they can kick back with Dark Horse Comics' Fallout: New Vegas graphic novel All Roads, written by the game's creative director, Chris Avellone. Finally, an included DVD will offer gamers a "making of" documentary about the development of New Vegas.

Though Bethesda didn't specify a price for the bundle, online retailer GameStop is currently listing New Vegas Collector's Edition as costing $80 for Xbox 360 and PS3, or $70 for PC.

Set in the Mojave Wasteland, New Vegas casts players in the role of a courier who gets shot in the head over a package and is left for dead. After recovering, players will be free to roam the desert, exploring new areas, modifying weapons, and getting wrapped up in the larger conflict between the New California Republic and the slave-trading Caesar's Legion.

Josh Sawyer, the project director and lead designer of Fallout: New Vegas, took some time to explain the new categorization of weapons (and a couple of other things) in the coming-soon follow-up of Fallout 3 on Bethesda Softworks' Fallout: New Vegas forum.

His words:
***8220;

Gun chat.

In 1997, I played the original Fallout. Like the games that followed it, Fallout had Small Guns, Big Guns, and Energy Weapons. In F1, the gun skills were designed for phased obsolescence. If you tagged Big Guns or Energy Weapons early on, you would not be able to gain much, if any, benefit from it for a long time. Even back then, I thought this was problematic. Before playing the game, players could not know how content would limit the applicability of weapons. Ultimately, it came down to three weapons: the minigun, rocket launcher, and flamer. Large, with heavy ammo, and either burst or AoE only. In Fallout 3, the list of Big Guns was expanded to include the fat man, rock-it launcher, and gatling laser. In most situations, these weapons were all still at least mid-power at their weakest. In talking to people in person and online, and in reading online commentary, I found that people were also still unclear on what marked the clear division between Small Guns and Big Guns (and even Energy Weapons, in the case of the Gatling Laser). Certainly the UI could be improved to help with this (something we have already done for F:NV), but it conceptually was a sticking point.

When I was looking at Big Guns for F:NV, I considered that the list of weapons was small compared to any other weapon category and several of the weapons arguably belonged (or at least could be easily categorized) elsewhere. Moving the Big Guns to different weapon skills and dissolving the Big Guns skill would allow weapons like the minigun to remain as a powerful top tier weapon without needing to invent low-tier "Big Guns" that might further confuse the dividing line. Coming up with a wide power spectrum of Guns, Energy Weapons, and Explosives would not be hard at all. Since our skill point economy is more frugal (I'll delve into this another time) and since we do have Strength requirements on weapons (resulting in increased sway for firearms and a decreased rate of fire for melee/unarmed), where you invest your skill points and SPECIAL points is still pretty important. A fully upgraded minigun wielded by a character with high Guns and high Strength cuts down rooms of people like a scythe, even at relatively long range. In the hands of an unskilled, low Strength character, it sprays a lot of bullets all over the place.

The exact categorization of weapons in F:NV isn't rooted in the logic of transferable skills from real life, but it's arguable they never were previously, either (missile launcher/flamer/minigun, for example). The categorizations have more to do with being clear and consistent with definitions. It follows this basic pattern:

* Does it explode? It's an Explosive.
* Does it use Small Energy Cells, Microfusion Cells, or other energy ammo? It's an Energy Weapon.
* Does it use conventional bullets of some flavor as ammo? It's a Gun.

So while it's accurate to say that Big Guns no longer exists as a category, it's not accurate to say that Big Guns and Small Guns were combined. The weapons in Big Guns were divided among the other weapon skills.

I know not everyone will be happy with this re-organization, but those are the reasons for the change. I hope the reasons are clear, even if you disagree with the decision. Thanks.

Hopefully the rest of the cast will be just as good while not as famous.

Its a whole new game,a whole new story,a whole new setting, new guns, new everything, the only thing that is the same is the graphics engine, that doesnt make the game an expansion,an expansion is a 3-4 hour long add on,a few new weapons and an extra location to unlock

It's the same exact game engine and graphics dude, it's not a new game. An expansion can be as long as you want it to be, especially when you're just using a map editor with some minor additions. Even the character models are practically the same. You shouldn't be making excuses for these companies. Doom 2 added a couple new guns too :lol1: 3-4 hours LOL you think this is the early 90s? They're gonna be selling this as a new game due to people like you when the production cost and content in no way justifies it.

Just because the graphics are identical means this isnt a new game? Oh,i guess it aint about storyline, playtime, weapons and enjoyment anymore,a new game = graphics, forget the rest right? Fallout is about putting 100's of hours into it,not the graphics,i couldent care less if it uses the same engine

Bethesda has done a third podcast, and this one is all Fallout talk, including some questions Jason Bergman answers. Fallout: New Vegas has been completed on all console and PC versions and has been shipped out to the manufacturers!

Also, in this podcast the computer specs are released. If you can run Fallout 3 on your PC, you will more than likely be able to run Fallout: New Vegas even though the specs for New Vegas have been bumped up slightly.

360 Getting Exclusive Fallout: New Vegas DLC
First instalments due later this year.

Bethesda has announced that it's to bring the first batch of Fallout: New Vegas downloadable content exclusively to Xbox Live.

In a move that echoes the post-launch plans of Fallout 3, Microsoft's Xbox 360 will be getting new content first ***8211; although what that content is and exactly when it arrives still remains a mystery.

"We're excited to continue the partnership between Bethesda and Microsoft, and build on the success of the game add-ons released for Fallout 3 on Xbox Live," said Bethesda's Pete Hines. "Fans will once again be able to continue their experience in the Fallout universe with the add-on packs planned for after the launch of the game."

Fallout: New Vegas sees Obsidian ***8211; a developer that harbours several staff who worked on the first two Fallout games - on the Wasteland beat and is being released this week. Expect the full verdict on IGN in the very near future.

Fallout: New Vegas patches incoming

* By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot
* Posted Oct 20, 2010 10:01 am PT

Bethesda says it is aware of issues affecting highly rated postapocalyptic role-playing game; patches incoming.

So far, reviews for Fallout: New Vegas have been mostly positive, with the game currently boasting an 85/100 score on Metacritic. However, critics are united in one complaint--well, many complaints, actually, since virtually every reviewer says the game suffers from an array of bugs. One player posted a humorous example from the game's introduction (see below), in which the head of the first character that players meet spins around like a windmill.

Bethesda is readying a series of patches to both eradicate bugs and fix technical issues in Fallout: New Vegas.

Now the game's publisher is assuring the public that fixes are on the way. Speaking with GameSpot, Bethesda Softworks' vice president of marketing and PR said, "We are currently working on releasing patches and updates as quickly as possible for Fallout: New Vegas for all platforms." He did not elaborate but did say that "announcements regarding the patches are forthcoming."

Developed by many veterans of the original Fallout games at Obsidian Entertainment (Alpha Protocol), New Vegas is set in the Mojave Wasteland and casts players in the role of a courier who is shot in the head and left for dead. After recovering, players roam the desert and the titular metropolis, exploring new areas and modifying weapons. They also get wrapped up in the larger conflict between the New California Republic, the slave-trading Caesar's Legion, and a mysterious New Vegas impresario named Mr. House.

For more information on New Vegas, check out GameSpot's previous coverage, or check back later today for the full review.

Many players have already come across several bugs and glitches in the game.

Bethesda is addressing the issue, though, saying game updates will be available for download soon.

"We are currently working on releasing patches/updates as quickly as possible for Fallout: New Vegas, for all platforms," Bethesda PR Manager Pete Hines told IGN.

"Announcements regarding the patches are forthcoming"

lol i guess, people are uploading videos on youtube of funny bugs and glitches from Vegas.

yeah got that too out of curiosity and it sucks.

I would reccomend the cowboy repeater Ive used it through most of the game so far.

If your in that town with the dinosaur I would reccomend doing the mission where you clear the ghouls...during that mission you will encounter a locked room where a ghoul is guarding it if you kill him you can loot him for a powerful hunting rifle

you can actually buy mods to upgrade the weapons too, modified my hunting rifle with a scope and works great for instant kills :fing02:

the only special weapon I got so far was called the rat rifle or something like that found it in a cave filled with giant rats...go figure.

Yeah i got a couple so far.

Got:

That Gun
Hunting revolver
Bumper sword
Recompense of the Fallen
Liberator
Big Boomer
RatSlayer(Best one so far, its a varmint rifle with a silencer and a nightvision scope. Much higher damage than a normal varmint peashooter.)

I'm mostly using Ratslayer and a cowboy repeater with a modified barrel so it has a much higher fire rate. For side weapon i use a .44 magnum until i started finding ammo for the hunting revolver.

About 15 hours in, loving the game. Played like 4 hours today. :lol1:

Sweet. Found the hunting revolver today.. It's pretty badass but I'm hunting spareparts to make repair kits all the time to maintain it, i'm too cheap to let a merchant repair it for 500+ caps..

Haven't been to Las Vegas yet and I'm a good 12 hours into the game..

Sure, one humanoid companion and one none humanoid. Like Fallout 3 with Fawkes and Dogmeat.

lolol yeah.. Remember when I first came to nipton and saw the legion freaks standing outside the city hall telling me to give the NCR a message I was like ''Sure! as long as you don't point don't machete's at me :D'' Then Boone came to my team and now there's only shotgun diplomacy :lol1:

lolol yeah.. Remember when I first came to nipton and saw the legion freaks standing outside the city hall telling me to give the NCR a message I was like ''Sure! as long as you don't point don't machete's at me :D'' Then Boone came to my team and now there's only shotgun diplomacy :lol1:

you know believe it or not i had searched around and did enough missions first to where i actually blasted those guys away when i got there.......haha

but i decided that the guy who i killed was probably a part of the story later so i reloaded it without killing them.

after i beat it once i think im gonna play through it again and try and become friends with the Legion just to see what kind of ****ed up **** i can get into

those dudes are no joke though :lol1:

i didnt know you could have two companions.

where did you find the robot at????

i wish Victor could be my partner

Yeah, I was thinking about joining up with the Legion myself but decided for the NCR since it was the safe choice for my first playthrough.. Love that they use real history like the hanging people up on crosses etc when they ****ed up. Thought they were gonna be a joke at first like ''the republic of dave'' in fallout 3, luckily that's not the case.

You find the robot in Primm in the old mans house. If you don't have a high science/repair then bring 3 scap metal, 2 sensor module and a Scrap electronic to repair it..

It is real cool, it even plays old civil war drum music when there's enemies near by :D

Once you do a lot of the missions in novac you can get a key to one of the hotel rooms and stay there. I know there are 3-4 more places you can own but i haven't got there yet.

If not you can "rent" the room for 100 caps. You pay once and never have to pay again.

Edit: Where i'm at the only gambling i can do is caravan, which kinda sucks. Which other games are there later on, i know there is blackjack and roulette, but anything else? I really hope there is poker.

Also i'm playing the game as a somewhat good guy...i'm nice to people but if they have something i like i steal it. I'm cool with the NCR and idolized in most towns i have came across so far.

On my next playthrough(When a couple of dlc's have came out) i'll make an evil character who only uses his fist and fist weapons.

Btw, i just made it to vegas to talk to Benny, how far in am i? I haven't explored the upper half of the map, just made it to the strip.

And i doubt i'll be able to upgrade ed-e. When i was doing the helios one mission the old lady who owns the scrap yard came out of nowhere and attacked me with all her dogs, don't even know why. But i had to kill that old hag and all her dogs.

you dont need the old lady to upgrade EDE-E but when you get to her EDE-E does trigger a recording..did that happen? Then you can meet up with the brotherhood of steele to let them look at ede e or the apocolypse people..ede-e sucks maybe hes goov ve robots or something but so far hes not too helpful.

and I havent talked to Benny so not sure how far you are ive spend a lot of time exploring all over and doing side missions..at this point I am working on vegas though just got in good with the gmmorrah bosses..

have you gone to bitter springs with Boone yet? if you talk to him it triggers the mission after a while..I think all the companions get an upgrade mission..watch out for deathclaws on the way I got killed in 3 hits by a horde of them had to find an alternate route.

I've done that mission, i killed the spy and got the code to diffuse it off his body. I think you need 80 explosives to disarm it without the code.

I did it it said bomb disarmed then the train left and blew up still, tried it like 4 times. so I said screw it Ill do it later.

Anyone got any weapon reccomendations to use vs deathclaws? The sniper rifle works great until they start charging at me..shotguns seem worthless.

Hate: The Bug/Glitches/Crashes, That you can't climb the rocks anymore some of them got invisible barriers, Caesars main base is cut off from the rest of the map and that you can barely reach it in this ''open world'' (Would much had prefered an Oblivion type open world map)

find a weapon called love & hate. With a 70ish unarmed skill i massacred the whole brotherhood of steel with it.

Also the Anti-Material rifle is good for one shot kills to the head on lesser opponents.

Yeah, saw that they're releasing a DLC 21th of December. Would've liked them to fix the bloody games before releasing a buggy DLC to an even more buggy game but what you gon' do...

Next fallout game I'm def not pre-ordering. **** being their beta-testers. GOTY-Edition FTW.

Evey human companion got a stick in their ass when it comes to the Legion.

Your choices are Lily or Raul, two neutral companions.

They should really have made an Evil char for this game.. A cold blooded raider, murderer, assassin would've been nice.
