That freestyle has always been a favorite of mine... And I'm not saying that Big L wasn't talented, he was incredibly talented. But I can't bring myself to call either of Big L's albums "classic". And Nas wins there, everytime.

Edit: But your avatar is smoking!

Big L has one album, lifestyles of the poor and dangerous

The Big picture was posthumous. Based on that alone Nas is light years ahead

As far as lyrical ability its close but I'll give it to Nas overall because he's got more high quality material

In fact all time I rate Big L sixth after Pac, Jay, BIG, Nas and Scarface

Nas and Big L have two different styles. It's hard to say who's better. I think Big L might be a little better than Nas, but Nas is still a legend and he can definetly compete with L.

There's no real definition.

Best quality of Big L was his persona. He was an entertainer. He had hilarious punchlines---"A girl asked me for a ring, so I put one around her whole eye" "putting more holes in a ***** than a golf course"
And he told wildly entertaining stories of crimes throughout his first album, like on the song Lifestyles of the poor and dangerous-- "I used to have a partner in crime by the name of chuck
We stalked the city, shootin **** up like frank nitty
We robbed kids and split the dough 50/50
One day we stuck a dice game on the ave. and split the cash
Then I murdered his ass and took his half
Because I'm all about ends and skins
When you got those, you don't need no mutha****in friends"

"Always sprayin tecs, because I be stayin vexed
Some ***** named dex, was in the projects layin threats
I jumped out the lincoln, left him stinkin
Put his brains in the street
Now you can see what he was just thinkin"

He just had such off the wall material that you can't help but laugh or be entertained when you hear his stuff. He's probably the most entertaining rapper I can think of.

Illmatic is undeniably a classic. I mean you have the Hip Hop haters(Rolling Stone) who give almost every hip hop album 2 stars, Rolling Stone gave Illmatic 5 stars. Rolling Stone gave It Was Written 4 stars, Allmusic also gave it 4 stars and Allmusic gave Illmatic 5 stars. I Am.. got 4 stars from Rolling Stone, Street's Disciple got 4 stars from Rolling Stone, Hip Hop Is Dead got 4 stars from Rolling Stone, and N!gger got 4 stars from Rolling Stone. I mean when you have Hip Hop haters, praising you and you're not even a commercial rapper...that says everything.

i disagree. i think that when it comes to defining a classic album there is certain criteria that cannot really be disputed. i think that for an album to be considered classic it has to have influenced the genre. whether or not an album is influential is not really about someone's opinion.

i agree that there is no right or wrong when it comes to opinions, but allow your personal taste to determine which albums are your favorite, not which albums you consider classics. in that case, then you can call the album a "personal" classic.

How can they not be disputed? Are you saying that opinions on art can be factualized? I don't agree with that because I fail to realize how one opinion or a cluster of opinions is somehow more right than another opinion when all they are are opinion. People hold certain things to be more important than others. Influence is not something that originates from fact. Influence comes from opinions.

Also, just because a lot of people share an opinion on one thing does not make that opinion more relevant because quantity does not equate to quality.

I don't know how you can objectify an opinion. I don't think it's right.

It's a classic because other people say so? That's a followers way of thinking. The only thing that is a classic is what you believe is a classic. Opinions are relative.

This is where things become unfair, because Big L was killed after his first album. You can only judge him by what he did when he was alive.

My favorite songs from Big L are alone, how will I make it, dangerzone, big picture intro, lifestyles of the poor and dangerous, casualties of a dice game, ebonics, devil's son, devil's son live.. and numerous other freestyles of his.

Crack, check Rolling Stone's rating for Illmatic as of 2004. It's 5 stars my man. You got the old ratings from 1994.

Lol I would not say something like that if it is not true. Rolling Stone gave some Nas album 2-3 stars when they came out but if you see the ratings now they're mostly 4-4.5 stars. I go by what they rate at the end of the day.
