UFC Undisputed 2010 First Look
Brock Lesnar's on the cover and he's probably going to kill you.
by Greg Miller

February 5, 2010 - The thing that struck me about the last UFC game was that it just didn't move right. Don't get me wrong, the game looked slick, sucked you into the fights, and had awesome moves, but something about the rigid transitions between positions and moves just seemed odd. There was that second of hesitation in the characters while animations played out.

THQ says that's done with.

Moments ago, the company ran UFC Undisputed 2010 through its first public match – Mike Swick versus Paulo Thiago – and although the gameplay demo was extremely short, THQ promised and showcased some really good stuff. For starters and piggybacking off of my complaint, the static animations of 2009 are gone. When your fighters are in the prone position or mid-hold, they're not just sitting there -- they're living and breathing. You'll see your arm struggle against a hold as you try and break it, there are transitions between takedowns, and – thank the Lord – there are cage moves. This year, if you're good enough, you're going to be able to slam coverboy Brock Lesnar up against the chain link and wail on his ribcage.

You can switch to the southpaw stance if you click in on the right joystick, the fight animations have been quadrupled, the clinch has been reanimated, the number of front submissions have been doubled, there's a new targeting system, and there are individual submissions like B.J. Penn's arm trap. Not enough octagon goodness? THQ has added karate, Greco-Roman wrestling, and Sambo fighting styles while doing away with archetypes for fighters – created fighters will now use individual movesets.

Tap out or die.

Speaking of created dudes, Undisputed 2010 is going to pack more than 100 fighters, and none of them are going to be made from the creation mode like 50 percent of last year's roster. Every UFC athlete in the game will be given the photo-realistic treatment. If you're looking to make your fighters (or at least your repertoire) more diverse, sways, ducks and leans have also been added to this year's game to make everything that much deeper and more realistic.

If my preview's sounding a little bit like a list of stuff added, that's kind of because that's what I was given tonight. Although the virtual Swick/Thiago welterweight bout was on a bunch of different TVs, developers were talking over it while playing so the match was moving at demonstration speeds and wasn't that amazing before ending with Thiago tapping out to an arm bar. It did look sweet – the graphics are no doubt sharper than last year, as sweat clung to the fighters' chests and blood spurted out as punches rained down on Thiago's face – but that was about it. To drive home that TV presentation, the match ended with the fighters in the ring in post-fight outfits such as Swick's "Dethrone Royalty Texas" shirt.

Brock Lesnar on the cover.

It wasn't shown, but a THQ press release makes it sound like UFC Undisputed 2010 is making a serious play for one of the best online fighting games. In this year's game you'll apparently be able to form "fight camps and leagues, train like real-life UFC fighters and go online to compete against other camps." There will be online co-op sparring sessions that dictate your credibility, popularity and the types of sponsorships you get. On top of that, this year's career mode will include the "Game Is Watching You" system, which will "track every action and use this information to dictate in-game commentary, opponent intelligence and overall career progression."

UFC Undisputed 2010 is giving you new modes such as Title Mode (fight through a weight class to earn and defend a belt), Title Defense Mode (complete milestone challenges on your road to stardom) and Tournament Mode (16-player individual and team).

Cage move!

Personally, I'm excited for UFC Undisputed 2010, and tonight only fanned the flames. The game looks good on an eye-candy level, but it's the kicking to the curb of the rigid animations that has me really excited. I noticed that the chain link of the cage didn't bend when a body was shoved up against it, but hopefully those types of touches can be amended as we lead up to Undisputed 2010's May release date. Because, if they can and all the stuff THQ says it has added actually gets added, this game should kick the crap out of last year's title.

There is also jiggle physics for the octagon girls. I thought you should know that.

Still looks the same. If they didn't have all those names, they wouldn't sell. THQ is known for reproducing horrible stuff for years. WWF Smackdown(1997) > WWE 2010

EA >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. THQ

you guys wanna bet on it?

since the UFC is backing Undisputed and obviously that game will sell more, we'll go by ratings. specifically, IGN ratings. I bet you Undisputed destroys EA's game.

I just hope the fix the online play. the BIGGEST flaw and problem in ufc 09 was the online. lag and the quiters problem. person would quit. adds a dnf to your record and doesnt even add a victory to you nor a loss to them which was the gayest thing in the world. dominate a guy only to have him backout and stay undefeated. if its still the same in this new game i say FK!!! the UFC Undisputed franchise and all HAIL EA MMA! but hopefully they wont be stupid enough to make the same mistake twice.

I'm getting UFC 2010 for sure. 09 was one of the best fighting games I have ever played in my life. UFC 09 rapes FNR4.

I might get EA MMA too.

Yeah, that killed the game for me. I spent weeks working on my technique, beating the AI and people in real life, then I went online and ended up giving up on the game. It's ****ty to spend 15+ minutes putting your effort into something only to have it ruined by some cunt who can't accept a loss.

I'll be getting both, EA MMA and UFC 2010, UFC 2009 was a beast, this one should be even better. I'm looking forward to it.

I remember when I use to play video games.

Reminds me a little of when I use to own a TV as well.

..
Not that I can't afford a TV, it's just that TV is **** in my opinion. Also, I don't want to be further distracted from studying.

So you think you're better than us?! JK....

How do you watch fights with no TV?

I'll be getting both games, I'm just more excited about EA's game because I've already played the ufc game.....

Not trolling. Read what "stillunknown" wrote. I just totally forgot to quote. No big deal...

I want to see what THQ has to counter this?

ok cool np.

and I don't know why you dont' like the first Undisputed game. yes the game had its little flaws, but it was the first game of it's kind. usually when developers make a sports game for the first time, it always has many problems, but this game was probably the best sports game ever that was made from scratch. The biggest problems with the game have been fixed for the new title which were rigid movements, generalized fighting styles and a lack of selection for fighting styles.

EA sports has never made a game totally realistic other than maybe Tiger Woods. The animations are always choppy and spastic. I don't think the EA game will even compare to last year's Undisputed let alone the new one.

It's not undisputed, it's THQ. They suck plain and simple. Go take a look at the Pride GP game. Now look at UFC Undisputed 2009. What's the difference? WWE style cut and paste faces? Thats about it.

And to go as far as the best sports game ever is a rediculous, I like the UFC too but that is rediculous. EA lets down it's fans alot but at least they come out with a real upgrade every 2 years or so. THQ has been getting worse and worse every year. Their biggest game is the WWE franchise. I would take Smackdown which came out in 1997, over WWE 2010 any day and every time.

You know why UFC didn't go with EA? The ONLY reason they didn't choose EA? Because EA wanted to include some fighters that weren't UFC contracted fighters. Which hmmm, MMA fans would want...... Fedor? Shinya? Vitor? Arlovski? But UFC didn't want that so they downgraded to THQ.

EA has obliterated every sports game except NBA 2k series. How can you not expect EA to do it right? Their game designers are REAL fans of the sports they work on.

I know EA will do it right just by the way they destroyed Tony Hawk.

EA's bought the rights to the NFL, prior to that 2k Sports owned football on video game platforms. EA likes buying rights or hoping on the bandwagon to make some dough. UFC didn't go with EA because EA did not want to make a MMA game at the time, by the sucess of Undisputed was intriguing to them as it would to most video game sports platform developers. With UFC being strictly UFC, the prospect of having a game with may more organizations would seem to be something worth developing after the recent success of undisputed. We will have to see how casual fans react as they will most likely not know many of the fighters in the game. And Madden, EA's flagship sports title, hasn't had a REAL update in years. Undisputed is one of the best indivudal sports titles. I hear Tiger Wood's PGA Tour is pretty good but I have no interest of playing golf on my gaming consoles.

But like I said I'll buy both because I expect 2010 to be even better, and for EA to make at the very least a decent game, not to mention having pretty much the entire relevant MMA world in two packages.

EA obliderates competition by buying them out. 2K owns EA in NBA, Baseball, College Basketball, College Football, NFL. Obviously EA bought out the rights to NFL and the the College games because they knew they were getting their ass handed to them by 2K. the only game they are better at is NHL and thats only because 2K doesn't put their best developers into their hockey franchise.

EA(in their own words) doesn't believe in total realism. They want to create a simulation but if the simulation's realism takes away from the "fun" of the game, they won't make it totally real. This is their belief.

And I'm not into wrestling that much but I have played their smackdown games a couple of times, and I have to say it's phenomenal. I don't see the problem. Don't know of any wreslting games that have been more realistic.

And I don't know what you mean by the copy/paste fighter faces. The faces didn't look copy/pasted to me. they looked like they were really well made. And from what I've seen from EA's first teaser trailer, the graphics aren't all that great. Even last year's Undisputed had much better graphics then what I saw in the EA trailer.

I don't think EA stands a chance against Undisputed 2010 even if they did have access to the UFC fighters. EA is gonna get smashed and they'll most likely stop making that franchise because they wont' be able to buy out the UFC like they did with the NFL and NCAA games.
