View Full Version : What is the secret to being a good boxer?
thatjamaicanguy 02-03-2010, 10:35 PM What do you think is the secret to being a good boxer?
Work hard? Play hard? Intimidate? Work on your abs?
I think something all boxers should know, is to work on your legs. Work on your movement, and strengthen your legs.
Sure, you can move your head. But moving your head around won't give you angles, it won't take away your opponen'ts straight punches, it won't give your punches that extra mustard.
Strengthen your legs.
What is your secret?
johndenver3210 02-04-2010, 01:26 AM I think it's dedication. Keep working hard, they say practice makes perfect. In this case, training can only make you better. But I must say, I don't think everyone is cut out to be a boxer.

-PITO- 02-04-2010, 04:50 AM Co-sign krueger. You can work hard all you want get an amazing body but how many times have you seen people who work beautifully in the gym and look great at everything get into the ring and suddenly all that greatness just vanishes? Sparring is the way to go.
Richie-G 02-04-2010, 09:46 AM Dedication, hard work and repetition.
Spar spar spar and more sparring......
i agree with these two. there isn't any secret to it other than hard work. natural talent can come into it but you can have all the natural talent in the world, if you ain't got hard work and dedication you will never make it.
#1Assassin 02-04-2010, 09:57 AM well everyone knows dedication is the key to becoming a good boxer. thats obvious, and not what the thread is about. its what do u work on, what element of training is the key to becoming a good boxer. TS said legs and krueger said sparring..
i agree with both. id say shadowboxing and sparring is the key. once u have sound fundamentals and is relaxed and comfortable in the ring, u came a long way.
Mares 02-04-2010, 09:58 AM depends on what type are u, i like to be more technical and use thinking and technique. :D
ANIMOSITY 02-04-2010, 10:00 AM avoiding weights and machines, athleticism will get you a long way in boxing
Double Jab 02-04-2010, 12:36 PM Co-sign krueger. You can work hard all you want get an amazing body but how many times have you seen people who work beautifully in the gym and look great at everything get into the ring and suddenly all that greatness just vanishes? Sparring is the way to go.
I co-sign that co-sign, in fact, I coco-sign.
Sparring helps you understand what techniques work and what ones dont, very, very fast. If you do it and your face or body hurts all of a sudden, it didn't work and you should change what you did. If you did something and it doesn't hurt on your head or body, good job, train it so you can do it faster and harder.
The best boxers are the ones that put up with this bullcrap repetative cycle the longest.
IBox85 02-04-2010, 03:30 PM sparring helps definitly... but u really dont know what u have till u get into ur first bout... i would say learning from ur bouts is very important... i try to take part in every fight that my city hosts and i can honestly say that i improved everytime from the bouts before... of course a lot of hard work and dedication is important... most of all confidence is key; what good is it if people believe in u but u dont? but then again over confidence can break u too
