View Full Version : If you could choose any three commentators to do fights forever, who would they be?
Slipx 05-09-2005, 03:29 PM It's something me and some friends were having an argument about.
Post any three commentators that you would prefer to commentate every fight you see.
my picks:
Emmanuel Steward(his reactions are great when punches land, plus I respect him more than most other trainers. he also speaks intelligently, never says any stupid things)
Teddy Atlas(his past bringing up mike tyson and his huge scar suffered from taking on 6 thugs at once, combined with the analystic way he reacts to seeing flush punches makes him a definite pick.
I'm confused about the third..Roy Jones does well, george foreman was great because sometimes he'd say stupid things giving us all a laugh, and I also think Leija would be good on television in this position because with glasses he looks articulate, and he speaks clearly, for a guy whos been in quite a few wars. I'm gonna have to go with george foreman though, even though his reactions to landed shots are mostly 'Oooohh' and not very intelligent, I could see him and Atlas getting into arguments and george picking on him at times down the road, so that's why I think george is a good pick. when he says something he stands behind it,regardless of who disagrees. plus atlas pushed george once at a press conference, and i think that little encounter would bring us comedy for years to come.
I say throw out the Jim Lampleys...they are useless, and only there for their looks, when the fight progresses their speech is useless, they should be done away with, absolutely.
Al Berndstein: is my favorite Commentator by far. He speaks truthful things.....is rarely biased and does the job well. He would be my first pick, and I always use him in reference to things said.
Jim Lampley: I like the guy. Though he may be biased....he is hilarious as hell. He is the wittiest commentator around IMO.
Emmanuel Steward: Always respected him...and has plenty of boxing knowledge...and is almost always right on the money.
Larry Merchant is the worst IMO.
The Troll 05-09-2005, 03:36 PM Good thread
#1 Jim Lampley

Barry Tompkins - still the best voice & gives good, short descriptions of the action, doesn't get selfish and take attention away from the in-ring action as much as Lampley, Tessitore, Atlas, etc.
Emmanuel Steward - makes great points, has good perspective on what the fighters and trainers are goin' through, gets excited now & then which cn add 2 the drama (I thought he was gonna have a heart attack during round 12 of Jirov-Toney)
Larry Merchant - strictly for comic relief and a few drunken rants
The Troll 05-09-2005, 03:39 PM Barry Tompkins is the worst IMO. He is so biased at times when he commentates for Kingvision it can make you puke.
Konstantin 05-09-2005, 03:39 PM I like George for the comedy, Roy for the ring experience and Lampley for the wit. I would have Emmanuel but I think hes biased
The Troll 05-09-2005, 03:41 PM Lampley is the best for integrity, for class, for his respect for boxing, for his respect for boxers, for his way of calling fights. He is the best commentator ever.
1. Some boxing insider that knows a lot of gossip and will spread it
2. Emmanuel Steward
3. Teddy Atlas, he has the knowledge and the passion.
4. Larry Merchant
If Ali didn't have Parkinson's I would love to hear him as a commentator...or Sugar Ray Robinson
Truth 05-09-2005, 03:49 PM Al Berndstein: is my favorite Commentator by far. He speaks truthful things.....is rarely biased and does the job well. He would be my first pick, and I always use him in reference to things said.

Thats my list too but c'mon Larry Merchant is a funny dude.

yeah he is funny. And of course...he is a great journalist. The things that make me not like him.....is that he is far too critical of fighters' performances, he tends to suck the fun out of fights, and interrupts too many post fight interviews and has to have it his way.
I lost respect for him because he is too haughty, condescending....and it pissed me off what he said about Buster Douglas on Legendary Nights. "I felt a sense that he was trying to get his time in the spotlight...so I let him". That kind of attitude makes me think.....he thinks.....he calls all the shots. When he clearly does not. It was really cool watching Bernard Rip him a new one.
and roy, and George....LOL.

Yeah, I know what you mean like during the Mayweather/Bruseles fight Floyd was fightig great but all Merchant kept talking about was Floyd's past and how his competition was sub-par. He does get annoying at times.
SacTown1 05-09-2005, 04:11 PM Lampley is the best for integrity, for class, for his respect for boxing, for his respect for boxers, for his way of calling fights. He is the best commentator ever.
wow, don't swallow, or else you might choke on Lampley's cojones
The Fix 05-09-2005, 04:12 PM riddick bowe
evander holyfield
mush mouth from fat albert...
i bet no one could understand what they were saying and the fans would have to make up there own mind about who is winning ;)

Why do you have to make a ***** ass statement like that just because I respect Jim Lampley. You have seriously have a problem. Jim Lampley is the best commentator, most people would agree with that, or why do big promoters pay HBO to produce their fights for them.

If only O.D.B. could be in the mix too, R.I.P.
!! Mr. Soprano 05-09-2005, 04:18 PM 1- Jim Lampley
2- Larry Merchant - 10 years ago (age and booz is staring to show)
3- George Forman / Emmanuel Steward
Lampley is five times funnier than Merchant. He says things that are brilliant.
"Hakkar is saying....what do I have to do to get knocked out in this town?"
"Corrales adjusts his trunks and Mayweather hits him. Corrales looks at Mayweather as if he were to say: "Cant you see I am adjusting my trunks?"
"As expected. Hopkins stuns Hakkar with the first punch of the fight"
**** like that is hilarious as hell in my opinion.

quit making it so easy, nobody cares if you have a crush on the guy, I know he's a damn good announcer, but integrity? Class? Dude it's a BOXING TELECAST, not a symphony....plus if you're sensitive to my comments, you must be new here, you should know by now that i'm the Angel Manfredy of this site, lotsa trash talk and average substance :)

Watch a TV KO production and then you will learn to appreciate Jim Lampley's class. Boxing commentators should have class, that is just my opinion.
Boxerdog 05-09-2005, 04:27 PM I was thinking that you meant a trio of guys to work together....in which case my "dream team" would be Al Bernstein, Howard Cosell and Big George. Can you imagine Cosell and Foreman ...talk about the odd couple!
Zab Super Judah 05-09-2005, 05:14 PM roy jones james toney and vitali at the same time
...seriously it would be roy jones emannuel steward lampley
MetalVomit 05-09-2005, 05:16 PM Jim Lamley is the man!
roy jones james toney and vitali at the same time
LMAO. That would be chaos. Two egomaniacs and a Big Kissass.
marvdave 05-09-2005, 05:21 PM Cosell in a class by himself. (no partner needed)
others
Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy
Barry Tompkins and Rich Marotta
The Troll 05-09-2005, 05:25 PM roy jones james toney and vitali at the same time
...seriously it would be roy jones emannuel steward lampley
Vitali's English is horrible, in general the way all Ukranians learn to speak English is plain bad, they need to teach it a different way or something there. At least however he attempts to speak English in public where most fighters wont do it.
The Troll 05-09-2005, 05:28 PM I forgot that Vitali's native langauge is Russian and not Ukranian and he was born in Kazakstan because his dad was an officer in the soviet army there.
Anghell 05-09-2005, 05:32 PM I like the trio of Lampley, Merchant and Jones, but I do miss Foreman. His arguements with Merchant were the best.
Zab Super Judah 05-09-2005, 05:32 PM lennox lewis rahman and vitali
on hbo i only listen to roy or stewart....merchant and lampley have nothing of value to say...that's what you get when you try to talk about something you don't know anything about.
merchant-'i totally disagree with that roy...'
jones jr-'when you lace up some gloves and get in the ring then you can talk!...'
merchant-'i think we can agree to disagree without having to pull rank...<nervously chuckles>'
but seriously roy gives the most in-depth of what's going on even more than george foreman.
Slipx 05-10-2005, 01:16 AM Lampley is the best for integrity, for class, for his respect for boxing, for his respect for boxers, for his way of calling fights. He is the best commentator ever.
I agree that he respects the sport and all that, but sometimes Lampley tries to 'overlap' all the other commentators on purpose, just for his voice to be heard. If you watch the Hamed-Kelley bout the first really good punch Naseem landed, they all three give their natural reactions and lampley goes "THERES THE THERES THE POWER" it sounded fake, also it's lame when he predicts what boxers are thinking, if youll watch back when george was commentating with them he used to take cheap shots at lampley for doing that
other than that he's probably the best announcer in the business in terms of voice/speech, his speech/tone are perfect, all the time
SuckaPunch 05-10-2005, 01:23 AM If you put Teddy and Larry in the same booth, what a catfight would that be, better than Castillo/Corrales:
Merchant: "I disagree with you, Teddy, on the comment"
Atlas: "Oh yeah, I'll sucka punch ya, ya old basta'd"
Teddy Atlas - red corner
Larry Merchant - blue corner
Jim Lampley - referee
jpboxer3 05-10-2005, 01:31 AM 1.Teddy Atlas
2.Al Bernstein
3.Jim Lampley
`STEELHEAD 05-10-2005, 03:56 AM 1. emanuel stewart
2. teddy atlas
3. max kellerman ( with george foreman around to reel him in )
howard cossell was my favorite growing up. and was one of the best and funniest football commentators.
Natty Dread 05-10-2005, 04:50 AM Jim Lampley
Max Kellerman
Larry Merchant
Manny_P 05-10-2005, 06:37 AM Teddy Atlas
Larry Merchant
Roy Jones
shemmue 05-10-2005, 07:51 PM teddy atlas

jim lampley not bias ??? then why does he seem to bust a nut at any punch dlh throws ??
SacTown1 05-10-2005, 07:54 PM If you put Teddy and Larry in the same booth, what a catfight would that be, better than Castillo/Corrales:

GREAT POST
one the undercard, how about the return of Bobby Czyz, vs Max Kellerman, in a cage match???
Solo322 05-11-2005, 01:41 AM lampley's good cause he loves boxing. I don't like tessitore and the showtime guys cause they just sound so fake all the time. Lampley's best aspect is that he's enthusiastic about his job and that passion that he has transfers to the viewers. I really enjoy the commentary by the hbo crew and I don't think I would know half the things I do without the commentary. Sure he's biased, but it's not like you have to believe everything he says. Let larry merchant tell him he's wrong and roy correct them. They usually balance out.
