View Full Version : Fighters who reached 100 fights without being KOD?

The whole Monzon vs Duran thing made me think of fighters who fought atleast 100 fights without getting KOD. Monzon fought 100 times without getting KOD and got KD once in his 100th fight. Off the top of my head; i can think of Sugar Ray Robinson, Willie Pepp, Niccolino Loche, and Benny Lynch of guys who reached 100 fights without getting KOD. Of course, the last four guys mentioned eventually did get KOD after their 100th fight. As a side note, Julio Cesar Chavez came close; he got KOD by DLH in his 99th fight in 1996.

Who are some other fighters that reached their 100th fight without getting KOD?

Young Stribling. He made it to over 250. I think I counted 268.

Young Stribling definitely one of the greatest fighters that never won a championship. His only KOD was Schmelling when he way past his prime. I remember the story how Stribling died and bumped into his own wife in the hospital before passing away. I rated Stribling #81 on my P4P list and Gavilan #37.

"Slapsie" Maxie Rosenbloom went 95 fights before getting stopped, but he was stopped only twice in 275 fights.

Jimmy Wilde went 96 fights.

SRR was the first who came to mind. I thought JCC might have made it but you pointed out otherwise....You got Pep, hmm I thought Archie Moore but he made it to his 74th...

Just remembered Lou Ambers did it and Pedro Montanez came close to about 98.

Edit this post to add Packey Mcfarland. He had many no contests and did have over 100 fights. I think Obama adding Stribling reminded me of those great fighters who never won the title.

Duilio Loi was not stopped in 126 bouts.

James Toney has fought 83 times without being stopped. Amazing for a modern fighter.

I have Loi #152 on my P4P list and i am sure if i start going through my list more names will start to pop up.

I think Toney and Camacho rate high among modern fighters. Camacho is up 87 and he has fought in 7 different weight classes. LOL, i am sure though his fighting style has not given him many fans.

?????

Stribling was 28 years old and only stopped fighting because he was killed due to a motorcycle accident. Way past his prime? Way? I wouldn't even say he was past his prime at all. Hell he beat a prime hall of famer in his very last fight.

That aside I'd personally rate Stribling over Gavilan p4p. Stribling beat world class fighters from Lightweight to Heavyweight....the only man who can claim to have done that. I'm aware several people beat fighters from Featherweight to Heavyweight (as did Stribling), but not guys a reputable rating system would list.

There is a difference between a fighter who is "washed up" and "past his prime." Stribling like Benitez started fighting as a young teenager and by the late 20's they are not the same. The fact is that he had over 230 fights and few fighters are in their peak or close to their peak after 200 bouts.

Gavilan vs Stribling is a good discussion for another thread, i think the fact that i even acknowledge Stribling is noteworthy. As he didn't even make the top lists for ESPN, Bert Sugar, or even Ring Magazine; and those suppose to be the experts. I think people don't give Stribling the respect due to him losing the title shot against Max and the whole controversy that surrounded the draw for the LHW title.

This logic is flawed. The guy was 16 when he started. He had no real amateur career. There's guys even fighting today with 200-300 amateur fights in the bank. This does not wash a fighter up if they take care of themselves.

I wouldn't even call Stribling prime until he hit LHW (or SMW rather), yet he started at FW....

Stribbling went an incredible 264 fights b4 losing by TKO..
Obama quite rightly states, he was killed on a motorbike at age 28.. Tragically, he was on his way to visit his wife in hospital, who i believe had just given birth..

Tony Canzoneri had 174 fights b4 losing by TKO to Al Bummy Davis in his very last fight..

Others include: Mike Gibbons (131) Dullio Loi (126) Billy Graham (126) Packy McFarland (112) Sammy Angott (108)

I know!..... That is absolutely mind boggling.. You know him better than me, try getting him to post those lists on here.. I did put a polite request in on another thread, but he may not have seen it.. You have to admit though, he does have a slight advantage over the rest of us owing to his occupation, but it is nice to see the true facts in full every so often: and very handy for cross referencing too..

Didn't see Stribling or Angott in the huge list of names he's just submitted.. Maybe because they've already been mentioned..

Interesting on Pancho Villa. Because i thought he was a little short of 100, but he did have 16 NC's which put him over 100 fights. I guess i assumed that his 92 official decisons wouldnt have included 16 additional bouts that were NC's. In addition, he died so young at 23 that few would think he would go over 100. I guess that is what happens when you go from the top of the head.

Well i did mention Niccolino Loche in my first post on this thread. I think Henry's list is specifically guys who went over 100 fights without getting KOD ever and than retiring. So some of the guys mentioned b4 were not part of the list compiled by Henry.

So you did... my mistake for missing that..

I'm not quite sure what you mean with ref to Henry's list, because anyone who has gone over 100 fights without being KO'd and retired, surely must have reached 100 in order to have accomplished this, so providing they have all done this, they must all be correct answers to the question.. Otherwise the question would have asked;
Fighters who reached 100 fights before being KO'd?

I'll also be taking a more in depth look at some of the fighters he's mentioned..
It's a fantastic list and i'm not doubting the statistics, but due to the vast content of names, some of them being relatively obscure, it creates plenty of branches for debate..

how is Jorge Fernando Castro not mentioned so far ?
i had to wait till i have 15 posts to be able to post this link :
http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=762&cat=boxer
Juan Carlos Gomez was his first stoppage loss after 124 pro fights.
yet he never gets his dues , and his opposition was very good , not as good as the amounts of fights he had , but he faced more than a few very good fighters : Roy Jones , Gomez , Reggie Gohnson , John David Jackson , Terry Norris , Vassily Jirov .

and yet less good but far bigger than himself : Imamu Mayfield , Paul Briggs , Sebastiaan Rothman , Derrick Harmon , Jose Luis Herrerra.

and i may forgot some.

As a side note he was the first boxer i believe to go the distance with Roy Jones Jr who had a streak of like 19 fights with a KO.

Most fighters today will never fight 100 times period. Once they get 20 or so fights under their belts they slow down and you are lucky to see them twice a year.
