Currently reading Championship fighting by Jack Dempsey, anyone fans of this book?! seems like sound advice and I like his style of writing!

Great book, fantastic read, also well written and a good display of technique and power generation. His drop step is very interesting to look up on. Just remember to take everything you read with a grain of salt, don't immeadeatly take something to heart just because he wrote it.
This book was written around 1950, technique and styles have evolved since then. Its fantastic for basics, and great for showing someone newer to boxing the general idea behind generating power behind your punch. Just remember to adapt it to yourself and your style. And remember a semi decent coach has more experience and knowledge than any one book can hold.
FalconsRB 01-29-2010, 07:29 PM 20 mins skipping on your first day? :dead1: Cant imagine after a year. When in training I usually do about 10.
msagrain 01-29-2010, 07:51 PM I always use skipping as my rest time.
Undefeated 01-30-2010, 02:55 AM Like my trainer says to new comers.
"Yea you say you love it now, but wait till you spar.. That **** will make up your mind if you want to stay or quit"
He's right also.. I seen people come to the gym... All tuff and stuff.. Spar and get beaten up and never come back.
Not saying you will, but just saying.. My trainer cracked me up when he said that ****..
Good luck though.. Train hard.. Theres no breaks in boxing son!

Your going to be surprised how quick your going to pick things up in the beginning. But dont get discouraged when it gets a lot tougher, ESPECIALLY when you first start sparring. Most gyms I've been to, people who are new drop like flys when they first spar. Mentally and Emotionally, it takes time to get use to sparring. And theres certain things a trainer just can't teach.
Thats why when a trainer sees a kid who sucks, but trys hard and wants to get back in the ring for sparring, they fall in love. (no homo)
You can't teach toughness and you can't teach someone how to think.
Baptist 01-30-2010, 02:50 PM cheers for the info guys
i am looking forward to making some progress, obviously sparrings a while off, any advice for me to be ultra-prepared as I can before I get in there?!
Or does it just depend on how I react?
The last thing I want is to train all that time then just give up after getting a punch in the chops
I honestly cant say if I could take it or not as I've never been much of a scrapper
Neill Ryan 02-01-2010, 08:44 PM god work dude keep at it... it you'll be fit as a fiddle in no time!

Baptist 02-02-2010, 08:05 AM Taibach ABC :) havent been this week as.....like a prize idiot, I have Tendonitis in my legs, I've been limping for almost 9 days, because I overdid it with skipping about 3 weeks ago
I was told not to skip on concrete, but I did, 5 days in a row, an hour at a time, and im paying the price now hah
Hopefully will be recovered by next monday
Eager to get in there!
