I still think that there are only a few different grading methods where 2Pac isn't #1. GOAT to me involves more than lyrical wordplay. Based on lyrical ability, crossover appeal, emotion, voice, and impact on the genre, I think Tupac Amaru Shakur will likely never be topped.

Jay-Z. Im not even that big of a fan of his anymore. only a moderate fan now. the last few weeks i've barley listened to him, but i still like him. but hes the best to me because he went from 1996-2003 with an album every year. And he went from 1998-2003 with a hit song or more every year. And to me he has 3-5 classic albums. And then you have to take into consideration that hes maintained a strong relevancy from 1998-2010. Thats a long time to be still be considered cool in hip hop which has a young demographic. Also 11 #1 albums, add that to the flow and witty word play.......those are my main reasons

LL Cool J ...just to be different.

I agree with Neils.. 2Pac is the greatest as far as the whole package.
he could do just about any style + a decent singer and had major crossover appeal.
The bad: Used too many 'go to' rhymes.

Biggie was better than 2Pac in lyrics, flow, singing ability, and fast raps.
He died to soon to tell if he would have had crossover appeal.

Krayzie & Bizzy- Bone: Obviously great flow speed singing ability crossover appeal.
The bad:have repetitive lyrics and subject matter.

Eminem: Best ever at word play 'imo'
The bad: repetitive subject matter.

Lil Wayne: GTFO...

Nas: Perhaps the best lyrically of all time, story telling
The bad: somewhat monotone. No matter what the song is his voice always sounds the same.

Jay-z: Great lyrics,good story telling
The bad: Jacks far too many lyrics and has become gimmicky over the years.

DMX: again great lyrics, good word play, powerful voice,Good story telling.
The bad: repetitive content

GZA the Genius. Great in Wu-Tang, GOAT solo. His beats are laid back but compliment his incredible lyricism perfectly, he's technically perfect, he has a good voice, great storyteller. Every single aspect of his game is perfect. No question in my mind that he is the single greatest rapper of all time.

I would say the Gza was the best rapper from 93 to 97, and its definitely possible that no rapper was ever as nice as he was during that 4 year period.

Eminem is NOT better than GZA. Eminem is pretty nice, but Lights Out is right. From 93-97, the Genius is unmatchable. You have Enter the Wu-Tang AND Liquid Swords in that stretch, two of the top five greatest albums ever.

Clint650
01-25-2010, 08:39 PM
think about like this....10 yrs from now you'll still be able to sit back and listen to Liquid Swords and still be impressed. it will still be relevant. Eminem on the other hand isnt even relevant right now. unless ofcourse you really love the guy for other reasons, like the media has, he really isnt anything special.

the topic goes beyond popularity. IMO record sales mean jack. It's the smaller labels and less radio friendly tracks that carry more weight as time goes on. MF Doom isnt all over the airwaves, or popping up on the video screen, but he's making some really good music from the heart, and it will be discovered by anyone who cares to listen.

what's up with the hate?

raps at the roach coach...."his boots are starting to grow roots"

not hating, just wasn't one of the many fans blown away by Em. think it has to do with his tone. some guys with higher pitched voices come off either cool or annoying. B-real is sick, so is Sick Jacken. i'm sure it has a lot to do with the fact that Slim Shady was played a billion times every day for too long. many of Slim's choruses can wear on my ears. the guy is talented though, just not GOAT.

how did i forget LL?

you know in retrospect...LL Cool J's "BAD" album was soooo dope. that guy right there, on the cover of that album....YES....HE'S THE BADDEST!!!!!
