Knights Templar seek papal apology for 700 years of persecution
By Paul Kelbie
29 November 2004

Seven hundred years after they were denounced as heretics and condemned to torture and death, the Knights Templar are calling for a public apology from the Roman Catholic Church.

The secretive organisation which was formed at the time of the Crusades has written to Pope John Paul II requesting that the Vatican officially atone for the persecution of the order.

The formal request for reconciliation to the Vatican has come from an English-based sept and is signed by the "Council of Chaplains, for and on behalf of the acting Grand Master". The letter asks for "an apology from the Vatican for the persecution of our brothers of the Knights Templar and the torture and murder of our leadership, under Pope Clement V during the 14th century AD".

The Knights Templar order was formed in 1118 at the end of the First Crusade to protect Christian pilgrims en route to the Holy Land. The organisation built up vast riches from booty it pillaged while fighting in the Holy Lands. Within two centuries the order, which enjoyed the backing of the Holy See and European monarchies, had become powerful enough to defy all but the Pope. By 1307 it had fallen foul of Philip IV of France who needed funds for his war against England. With the blessing of Pope Clement V, the king moved against the Templars on Friday 13 October of that year and had them all arrested for heresy. More than 2,000 Templars were tortured and forced to confess to crimes of homosexuality and sodomy; spitting and trampling on the cross; and devil worshipping. As a result King Philip was able to seize their money and assets and by 1314 when the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Jacques de Molay, was burnt at the stake they had ceased to officially exist.

Some of the Templars fled to Scotland, where they are reputed to have helped Robert the Bruce defeat the English at Bannockburn, and under his protection many of their rituals survived. Today many groups from Freemasons to the Cult of the Solar Temple claim the Templars as ancestors and the modern order still includes numerous influential members.

Now, with the 700th anniversary of its persecution approaching, sources within the Knights Templar claim the order wants to improve relations with the Catholic Church and win some sort of acknowledgement for the suffering inflicted.

There were signs last year that the relationship between the Templars and the Vatican was improving when, in a church behind the Colosseum, a Catholic priest presided over the first Knights Templar ceremony in Rome for 522 years.

You know, I gotta agree with you on this one, but I must say this is a very interesting thread, I know a couple freemasons, they are skilled in their craft, but they won't tell you how they do it!

The templars actually did do alot to subvert the Catholic Church as an institution. At the time this went down, the vatican was directly controlled by the French Kings. The French King at the time, I don't recall his name, owed the Knights Templar A ****load of money. He didn't want to pay, so he leveled some BS charges against the Templars to his puppet pope (don't remember his name either).

The Templars actually made alot of contributions to the western world. They created the first banks in Europe. They also are responsible for introducing alot of navigation equipment used by the Arab peoples to European sailors as well.

I don't get why they are trying to better relations with the vatican NOW. The REAL templars are probably spinning in their graves.

I think they Catholic Church does owe them an apology. What they did to them was crooked and ****ed up and they should say sorry. Im sure its not the only cruel and unusual thing they have been involved in that they havent apologized for. I dont want to offend any people who may be members of the Church, but the unaccountability of the church is amazing. We dont need to go into it but just look at the unapologetic way they have handled the molestation scandals. Those MF's need to be held accountable for the ****ed up **** they have done to people throughout history.

They don't really mention the papal bull of 1307 here, The papal bull was pretty bad ass. In 1307, the pope ordered the kings of Europe to arrest every Templar (basically kill them,it say that here but what it doesn't mention..... Is that so not to have the word spread, have the letters opened simultaniously all over europe. Its midevil god father....pun intended. The pope sent out letters to all the parishes saying don't open this till midnight tonight Friday 10/13 1307.

10/13 comes around, its says, arrest all the Templar.

This is believed to be why friday the 13th is considered back luck.

Yeah, it's funny to me that so many people have been slaughtered in the name of religion, and it's still going on today by the radical muslims. It's pathetic really. Is killing people what God wants you to do?

What about the Ten Commandments and that whole "Thou Shalt Not Kill" thing?!

Its awkward how people want an apology for what our ancestors did, its obvious that we learn from our mistakes, but yet we continue to make them. I do not discuss religion with anybody. I do not want to offend or argue over a belief. I think we all deserve an apology from somebody, but I do not go out of my way to get it. # Words.... Let it Go!!!!!
