The ink hasn’t even had a chance to dry on the newly signed contract for Japanese power puncher and new UFC acquisition, Takanori Gomi, but that hasn’t prevented the predators that inhabit the most stacked lightweight division on the planet from picking up the familiar scent of fresh blood in the air.

There will be no warm-up fights for Gomi in the UFC unless the man many consider to be the second best lightweight in the world could be viewed as a tune-up by some stretch of the imagination.

ESPN’s MMALive has recently reported via Twitter that the show’s very own Kenny Florian will be the first roadblock standing in the way of Gomi in the knockout artist’s highly anticipated promotional debut.

No date has been set for the match-up between the two as of this writing , but 5 Oz. expects for the date of the bout to be sometime in Spring, with official word coming down shortly.

The bout with Florian would be a big step up in competition for Gomi as of late, who has gone 2-2 in his last four bouts; losing consecutive bouts at the hands of Sergey Golyaev and Satoru Kitaoka before rebounding with back to back wins over the likes of Takashi Nakakura and Tony Hervey.

Florian is coming off of a performance many have judged to be the most impressive of his career, slapping a rear-naked choke on Clay Guida for the submission victory after putting on an absolute boxing clinic for the bulk of the previous round and a half between the two at UFC 107.

The winner of the scrap could very likely get a title shot against UFC 155 pound title holder B.J. Penn; a man that holds a previous rear-naked choke victory over both fighters [source] (http://fiveouncesofpain.com/2010/01/03/kenny-florian-vs-takanori-gomi-in-the-works/)

More winnable fight for Gomi than a Sherk or Maynard fight, Kenflo doesn't like to get hurt and doesn't have great takedowns. Kenny may run around but if Gomi connects, he's dead.

And what is your "boy" going to do once he gets there?

Hope Gomi can pull it off, if he does hit Kenflo clean he will melt. But I think Kenflo is the all around better fighter and will win...

Gomi is way past his prime! I'd favour kenny to beat.

Agree. Gomi in '06 was a ferocious little bastard, these days he just seems kinda lethargic and almost looks like he's not training and only showing up for a paycheck. IMO Florian will sub him late in the 2nd.

Florian takes this fight IMO. He's good at staying away from people with punching power (with the exception of Penn who is in a class of his own). Florian by late submission.

You do know that Penn and Gomi's stand up isn't that much different. Besides the differences of Penn picking his shots better and Gomi having variety(head & body shots).

Only way Gomi loses is by him beating himself. By that I mean, getting sloppy and KenFlo slaps in a submission via Gomi's takedown reversal.

Otherwise Gomi wins. KenFlo isn't going to be able to hit and run like he did with Huerta. Gomi's footwork is on par with Penn's.
