When I was a bit younger like 12-13 like a few minutes b4 tyson fought lewis, my bro was sayin how mike tyson has the harder punch but lewis has a reach advantage...

but now that I started watchin boxin for a year and from what I've seen Lewis has got the harder punch but Tyson was just aggressive and had the hand speed as well...

What do you guys think?

I say Lewis. Tyson had great power, but IMO Lewis, with his big frame and reach, delivered a more punishing blow if he caught you.

tysons jab, left n right hooks and uppercuts is harder... lewis staight right is harder, cuz tysons a converted southpaw

I think Lewis had more power because of his size. His right hand was one of the hardest in the business p4p. Both guys can wack though.

Agreed. Lewis´ straight right is the only weapon in his arsenal that would match any of Tysons powerful punches. In any case, Tyson would hurt you more, because of his speed and accuracy. Lewis slams you to the ground, Tyson removes your head from your shoulders.

Yeah, Lewis' straight was so deadly, because he was usually punching down to his opponents, putting even more force behind it.

It's a totally different kind of power. Tyson's shots were deadly because they came so fast and from different angles, ususally in bunches, and most people never saw them coming. Lewis probably did punch harder but wasn't as skilled as Tyson when it came to puting them together, and of course wasn't as fast.

With distance....Lewis right hand was more likely to take you out than any one punch Tyson could throw.
But, Tyson was the better two-fisted puncher....could do serious damage from any angle.
Tyson also banged to the body much harder. Perhaps that was due to his being shorter....but still is a fact.

it's funny because lewis was not really considered a big puncher early in his career, most people at that stage thought it was just the number of punches he through that resulted in his knockout wins. it was only later on in his career that he showed just how powerful he was, especially in the knockout win of rahman. it's hard to say just how hard lewis hit. i think if you consider foreman and shavers on the highest tier of big hitters, i think you would have to put lewis on the second tier just below those guys. he certainly had power

Actually Paul it was the opposite way around. Early on in his career Lewis was considered a dangerous but easy to hit slugger who DEMOLISHED the Razor Ruddock that was so competitive with Tyson. Lewis was always billed as a huge puncher.

It was after Manny got ahold of him that his style was refined and he became known as a boxer and not just a puncher.

i'm not so sure achilles, early in his career lewis was only considered a decent hitting counter puncher, who knocked guys out with the number of punches he through. the razor ruddock knockout win came as a total suprise to most people at the time, and is generally regarded as somewhat flattering to lewis, because ruddock was possibly shot at the time. he was never considered a big puncher up until that point. i think the fight that best demonstrates this point, is his fight with phil jackson.a hard but not concussive hitter at that stage of his career.

Totally agree with everything said here. The early Tyson was extremely active and accurate, and every punch was hard. He would hook to the body (very effectively) to open up the head, and then finish you off with his uppercut or left (sometimes right) hook (his honey punches).

But there’s no doubt that Lewis, punch for punch, had a harder straight right and left jab than Tyson. I would put their left hooks and uppercuts about even. However, if you factor in Tyson’s level of activity, you could make a very good case that his total power output (i.e. ability to inflict damage) was actually higher than Lewis’.

Along with the straight right, Lewis had a pretty nasty uppercut. He didn't seem to be one for hooks or body punching though. The damage he did to Rahman's face was pretty gross. I'd say Lewis probably hit harder, but it's pretty hard to tell. Tyson was just way more aggressive and the hits came faster.

I have said this once I will say it again.

Lewis is a harder puncher, but Tyson is a more explosive puncher, and therefore I will say a more damaging and dangerous puncher. So I voted Tyson.

Tyson can punch VERY hard, but he can't punch like Foreman and Shavers...not even Lewis...

In this thread I was sayin who has more one punch ko power, that means Lewis's best punch vs. Tysons best punch...

I'd have to say Lewis

but ya overall Mike Tyson is more dangerous cuz he throws punches from every angle and has power in both hands..

The Troll

Tyson punches are more damaging because of the speed and accuracy of them, that makes up for him having less raw power ( which he does not lack a whole lot). Tyson has well over 25 first round KO's in what 50 fights? Thats unprecedented.

buff_mike10
04-29-2005, 10:24 AM
For one punch power it go's to Tyson. His left hook was a harder punch then Lewis's straight right or uppercut. Rahmans face got busted up so bad due to jab after jab and the number of punches thrown. Tysons opponents didn't get a chance to get that busted up because he ended it so quick.

Kid Achilles
04-29-2005, 10:47 AM
That just isn't true. Tyson landed his hardest punches flush on his opponents chin, and it still usually took several knockdowns to end his fights. Lewis usually went soft at first and then unleashed his best stuff when he saw a big opening. It's true that Lewis would land a lot of punches on his opponents prior to his knockouts, but they weren't his best shots and they didn't land flush like Tyson's did. If Lewis had Tyson's speed and accuracy (as well as his aggressive nature) he would have knocked out nearly everyone he fought. Tyson was not even the hardest puncher of his own era. He was just the quickest and most accurate. He had power that was well above average, but it was his quickness and pinpoint accuracy that made him so lethal.

When the question is asked "Who hits harder".....I'd like to think it's not about breaking it down to who's punches were heavier or whatever.
If a guy knocks a higher # of people out because his fist travels through the air faster than the guy who has more of a thud.....then he is the harder puncher.

I don't think Thomas Hearns was a heavy handed guy.....but he knocked out so many because his right hand was a lightning bolt.
There were probably a # of guys in/around his weight class who could hit a heavy bag harder, make the mitts "pop" more....but when it came to laying dudes out, Hearns was the man.
Therefore, he's the harder puncher

Consider the facts:
Tyrell Biggs L TKO 7 Tyson-L TKO 3 Lewis
Frank Bruno L TKO 5/3 Tyson-L TKO 7 Lewis
Razor Ruddock L TKO 7 Tyson-L TKO 2 Lewis
Frans Botha L TKO 5 Tyson-L TKO 2 Lewis
Andrew Golota NC 3 Tyson-L KO 1 Lewis

Definitely Lewis!

Lewis punches harder, no question. The reason for this is that Tyson throws more punches ( in his prime ) and is faster, it gets to the opponent better. Tyson`s one punch finishes were against poor fighters ( Botha, Saverse, an old Holmes ) but Lewis has a harder single shot. Look at their common opponents. Lewis hurt Holyfield, Tyson could not dent him, although Tucker was past his best it was evident Lewis had the more effect. Bruno`s ventures were quite simular for both Tyson and lewis but look at what Lewis` power did to Golota and Tyson although hurt Golota didn`t have the same effect. Need i mention the Razor Ruddock fights. Lewis the harder one punch by a mile!

Ruddock was only knocked down three times cos the ref stopped it, i`m sure Lewis would have been more than happy to nail him to the canvas had the ref let it continue!

The question is not who is the most efficient knockout puncher. The question is who punches with the most sheer kinetic force behind their shots and the answer is Lewis.

Ya I agree with that to
Power in boxing comes from speed, accuracy, timing, and balance
but power helps to...
and landin a shot he dont see comin hurts a lot more

for sayin Hearns was the man I'm gonna give u karma

I would say that Lewis's hardest punch, the big right hand is harder than anything Tyson can throw. However Tyson throws very hard and with bad intentions with every punch in the book.

If you look at the Ruddock fights fights with Tyson and Lewis you can see how devastating Lewis big right hand is. Tyson nailed Ruddock alot with big shots (knocking him down 3 times in the second fight) and he still went the distance with Tyson. Yet one big Lewis right hand had him down for the count.

One of the times Tyson knocked Ruddock down he went down smiling. When I saw Ruddock go down from Lewis' big right hand I said to myself "well he aint smiling now."
