View Full Version : Which titlist is the biggest embarrassment - Ruiz or Frank Bruno?

A few years back I used to regard the extremely brief reign of Frank Bruno as heavyweight champion of the world, a complete embarrassment to the profession.

While he was popular for his projected persona of a jovial goof, Frank had a massive punch... but lacked the skills to use it. He even confessed in his autobiography that he won the championship by holding on to McCall in the 12th, absolutely shattered.

Yet then there's Ruiz, the ugliest fighter in history. A record-breaking Latino (You'll go down in history because every one of your racial genotype who tried to be a heavyweight sucked even more than you did?!!!?) he holds, he mauls, he fouls... he fights ugly. And he's dull, to boot.

But which one is the biggest blot on boxing's history? Frank snuck in in a tiny gap between overlapping Lewis/Tyson/Holyfield reigns, but Ruiz seems determined to stay.

Hey, Rak. I know that you have the right to speak your mind but you always start threads discrediting Ruiz. Will you ever post about something else?

I don't remember Frank Bruno having that bad a boxing style, in fact the only thing I remember about Bruno is when he got KTFO by Tyson. ;) As far as Ruiz is concerned, the overwhelming majority of fans and pundits alike percieve him as having an awful and boring fighting style and Ruiz winning most of his fights in "ugly" fashion. So if Ruiz doesn't change his style of fighting in the near future(so it is viewer friendly),I think he will go down as being the biggest embarrassment to the heavyweight champion circle.

I dont really like Ruiz, but he has done what he has to do to keep his belt. Therefore, he continues to make money at his career even with his "limited skill". The guy is apparently smart. So I give him his props. He would be more fan friendly if he stood toe to toe and just fought, but then he wouldnt be a titleholder, just a journeyman fighter.

On a nother note, the guy is as much Pueto Rican as i am. He is as much Irish as mickey ward, and as Italian as aturo gatti. Meaning he is American and grew up fighting in America, so therefore he is not Latino in the same sense as a guy from Mexico becoming Heavyweight champion. His ancestors were latino im sure, but I dont buy this first lation heavyweight champion crap.

I'm sure I voted Ruiz mainly because he's still the damn champ after all of his boring ass fights. I remember Bruno being champion, but didn't really pay attention to him until Tyson beat him so I can't say he was the bigger embarrasment.

I think Bruno is more of a Limey embarrassment... though Lennox made up for it, eh?

Frank showed-up ready to fight, even when he lost big, while Ruiz shows-up ready to ... what, fight? I think Bruno has thrown more punches that missed than Ruiz has ever attempted.

ruiz is a bigger embarassment. he's not even a fighter. i think it's an embarassment to boxing that someone like him holds titles

Definitely Ruiz I dont why everybody beats up on Frank Bruno so much he was a pretty damn good heavyweight all his wins except for 2 were by KO and his only losses were to Tyson twice, Tim Witherspoon, James Smith, and Lennox Lewis.

I don't think Bruno was an embarassment at all.
He was rarely ever in a bad fight & he despite his limitations, he finally did become a legitimate title holder. Dodgey final round or not, he thoroughly outboxed McCall to win it.
And, while a lot of folks like to give poor Frank a rough time for his KO losses, we should look at who KO'd him. All of them were legitimate punchers. Good bangers all of 'em.
Now, I'm not going to be foolish enough to argue that he had an underrated beard, 'cause that's NOT the case. For a world class heavyweight, it was pretty much ****. But it wasn't COMPLETE ****. I mean, it's not as if he was KO'd by the likes of "Quick" Tillis, Jesse Ferguson & old Joe Bugner. Had that been the case, then we could call it rubbish, but it held up well enough until he met the REAL punchers.
So, no shame there.

IMO, the only big dissapointment with Frank was the way he went out.
I've just never understood that statue-like performance against Tyson the second time around. After he put up such a galant effort against him in their first fight for Bruno to just freeze up like that & pretty much submit in the rematch, never made much sense to me.

frank would probably beat 2 out of the big four that hold the belts now. (byrd and vitali would cause him problems)

he wasnt as bad as everyone makes out.

he had a murderous right hand for starters.

Frank Bruno......was not an embarrassing fighter.
Yeah, he was scared ****less against Tyson in their second fight, but so were a lot of guys.
He didn't have a boring style.....& he usually gave a great effort....going out on his shield.

Remember.....he gave Lewis a tremendous fight before Lewis caught him with a monster hook....

He was a decent fighter, an earnest pug.

You all know how I feel about Ruiz....

No comparison.

bruno was just a blip in time, he was nothing, retarded at best....nothing more.....ruiz aka *****ass....is the biggest embarrassment to the latino community ever as a boxer. he gives latin fighters a bad rap. he is forever holding, hugging and complaining, the exact opposite of a true latin warrior!!! ruiz, in the last 5 years has not beaten a fighter. he has gotten the win, but has not beaten any of them. not decisively, and not at all..... i personally think that just because he is with don king he gets the win, and also because he is latin, cause don king can bank on that!!cashing in on heritage.....it sickens me....

how many times you had the courage to get in the ring? 30 40 times? no?

shut the **** up then.

bearing in mind Franck's mental health problems of late to call him retarded is sick at best.

There is no comparison between the two. Bruno was a huge puncher with a weak jaw who gave his all most of the time. Ruiz is the most boring heavyweight in the last decade. Bruno had a ton of fans (pretty much everyone in Britain, boxing fan or not). You could hold a Ruiz fanclub meeting in a phone booth.

Ruiz for sure is the bigger embarrassment to the sport. While Bruno was limited as a boxer, his title reign was short-lived, which was exactly what it should have been given his skills.

On the other hand, Ruiz clearly has limited skills, but has held the title for an embarrassingly long time. The fact that he lost it to a blown up light-heavy makes it even worse, because it clearly shows just how mediocre he is. Having him as a major title holder for so long is IMO, a huge black mark on boxing.

There was an interview in Boxing Monthly this month with Bonecrusher Smith where he said Tyson was the hardest opponent he had as he couldn't hit him.

But when asked who was the hardest puncher he'd ever faced, he mentioned two names. One of them was Wade someone(?) and the other was Bruno. Limeys used to get excited over Bruno because not only was he a popular personality, but he DID have a big punch

i'm glad i sicken you. lets me know, that you know what i'm saying is true.....Ruiz is a bum, and Bruno wasn't anything to even write about......and i have had 47 amateur fights, 43 wins with 4 losses 14 ko's..... i don't box now after a back injury, getting your mom out of my bed, before your sister caught us in the sack. and your dad is my fluffer!!! bye guy...dildo!!

In which case you should show more respect to a fellow fighter.

your behaviour is dispicable and childish.

As for you having amatuer well kudos to you, even if it is with heafdguard etc it takes guts to do so. I know as pracxticed wadaryu (second dan) and fought in numerous competitions so knwo what it is face fighting and be involved.

somehow i think your talking **** as most folk I speak to who have the bollox to get inthe square circle NEVER speak so disrespectfully of a fellow fighter. Let alone one that pissed all over their achievements by comnparison.

to make fun of franks mental illness is low, and the act of scum, which plainly you are.

finally dont abuse my family unless you are prepared to do it to my face mate. Which brave little internet warrior you are. there is little chance of that happening. Though I will be in vegas later this year covering a big fight if you would like to introduce yourself.

theres no need. no need at all.

For a guy who knows something about the ring, you've shown no evidence of it in your posts. YOU should know better than a lot of guys in these forums what it means to step into the ring, but you'd never know it gievn the language you use about a guy who's had some success as a pro.

The correst answer to the original question is:

option C: BRUCE SELDON

Of the two, Ruiz is by far the biggest embarrasment. At least Bruno tried to FIGHT. What Rosie Ruiz does is nothing close to prizefighting. I don't understand why ref's let him get away with crap.

Personally, I think Tyson was a far greater embarrassment than either Bruno or Ruiz. Yes, Tyson was a better fighter but neither Bruno or Ruiz disgraced the sport. They should both be applauded for reaching the top despite their obvious limitations.

Bruno would hold a belt or two now, no problem.
