I made this thread in NSB but got buried by Pac vs Mayweather.

1 - A national or federal boxing commission.

Rules & regulations that extend across state lines. Promoters, judges, referees all held accountable for nefarious actions. John McCain has tried several times but nothing came of it.

2 - Make the official weigh ins the day of the fight.

I find it ridiculous that on fight night welterweight titles are being fought by someone weighing in as a middleweight, flyweights coming into the ring as 130 pounders etc etc.

3 - Elimination of sanctioning bodies

Somebody should just buy the ibf, wbo, wba & roll it into one organization. One champion to represent America. This ties in with 1#. How cool would it be to be called the american featherweight champion or american welterweight champion. The super champion, regular champion, interim champion BS is just a slap in the face to the boxers & fans.

4 - Judges held accountable for bad scorecards.

Suspend judges for horrific scorecards. Fire them along with a ass beating for Gale Van Hoy type score cards.

5 - Install Instant replay

FFS almost every sport is doing it. Just think of all the good things that could be solved by doing this one little thing.

6 - Age mandatory Retirement for Judges & Referees

Joe Cortez should have been put to pasture A LONG TIME AGO. Same for the Gale Van Hoys & Glenn Hamadas of the world. This is the reason why refereeing in all sports across the board is so horrendous. You are asking 60 year olds to make split second decisions on athletic specimens. That's how so many mistakes occur. Its a fact, as you get older you slow down physically & mentally. England i think has age mandatory retirement for referees.

7 - Extend fights to 13 rounds

It lessens the draws & gives a close fight another deciding round. I know they did because of the du ko kims death & wbc started the ball rolling. But boxers still die in 12 round fights. Is there data & statistics that encouraged the change or was it just a knee jerk reaction with no research or reasoning behind it?

8 - Make Catchweights illegal

I think everyone will agree to this. Again this is only possible if we have a national or federal commission.

9 - Recognize Ring Magazine belt as a official title

I find it ludicrous that crooked sanctioning bodies that strip champions of their belts without losing it in the ring, or rate undeserving boxers of 1# rank status, gets recognized, but a long standing historic, righteous Ring belt who PROPERLY RECOGNIZES THE TOP 2 FIGHTERS IN THE DIVSION & RECOGNIZES THE TRUE CHAMPION OF A DIVISION OR TRUE LINEAL CHAMPION who does not charge sanctioning fees gets marginalized by the IBHOF & WBHOF. Start recognizing Ring Titles & stop validating crooked ass sanctioning bodies.

10 - Put boxing Back in Network TV

This past few years has seen boxing heads try to make match ups that are fair, compelling, & with statistical & boxing merit & we end up with great fights.

Boxing is ready for prime time. The boxing fan base is a sleeping giant that needs to be awaken.

What do you say historians?

There is something to be said for experience. That said, refs who consistently blow calls just shouldn't be called upon to work major fights. Laurance Cole is a good example of this. He's a fairly young ref, yet he sucks. Jmo.

7 - Extend fights to 13 rounds

It lessens the draws & gives a close fight another deciding round. I know they did because of the du ko kims death & wbc started the ball rolling. But boxers still die in 12 round fights. I don't have a problem with 12 and I suppose I really wouldn't have a problem with 13. The only thing I can see wrong with this is a fighter who thinks he's ahead in a close fight may coast instead of going all out in the 12th to ensure a win. Im sure there are plenty of scenarios you could present Which favor 13 rounds, so I wouldn't really argue with it.

8 - Make Catchweights illegal

I think everyone will agree to this. Again this is only possible if we have a national or federal commission.

I don't mind catchweights when it can get the two best fighters relatively close in weight to fight. I do have a problem when it can dictate a change of title when one fighter simply isn't allowed to come in at the highest point within the particular weight class.

Boxing is ready for prime time. The boxing fan base is a sleeping giant that needs to be awaken.

What do you say historians?

point (1).. we already have boxing commisions

point (2).. weigh-in the day of the fight leaves a boxer dehydrated and insuffisant time to re-hydrate

point (3).. without the sanction bodies we would then only have World Championship fights once or twice a year from the undisputed title holder, sanctioning bodies titles are great for TV the real boxing fans make their own mind up about who they think is the real world champion in each weight division regarless of the alphabet bodies.

point (4).. Judges held accountable is ridiculous, i have watched well over 20,000+ fights over the years and can honestly say i have not seen more than a handful of dubious decisions, the armchair viewer is watching on cold-flat-screen where as the judge in watching from feet away from the action and can hear the yelps a fighter makes when hit, Judges are covered in blood, spit, snot and in a far better position to score the fight than some guy sitting drunk with his cronies watching a TV at 5.00am through blurred eyes.

point (5).. instant replay? ..i cannot see the need for this in the sport of boxing, holding up the action while we watch a replay of say a 12 punch salvo from Pacquiao to see if one strayed below the waist line would give fighters vital seconds to recuperate

point (6).. Age mandatory for Judges & referee`s.. `Ridiculous`that is an ageism remark..The greatest referee in the history of the sport was Arthur Mercante who refereed until his mid 80s and never in my opinion made a rash judgement or mistake, take a look at Roy Jones vs Montel Griffin (2) to see how on the ball Mercante was... The great judges of the last half century have all been in the USA and over the age of 50

point (7).. Extent fights to 13rds.. back to 15rds would be better it seperates the `men from the boys`

point (8).. Catchweights... i fail to see what the problem is with catchweight bouts, from memory i can only recall 2 which are Pacquiao vs Cotto & Delahoya.. both was great fights and the best man won.

point (9).. Recognize Ring Magazine belt as a official title.. That would mean that fighters would be fighting in theory for the Golden boy Promotions GBP Belt, as GBP own The Ring Magazine.

point (10).. Put Boxing on network TV.. The sport of boxing is the richest prize in sport and far to big for network TV which is why we have PPV.. other sports like football & cricket have been tried on PPV yet the numbers was dismal, only Boxing is where the big PPV numbers are, i would love to see boxing on network TV but it will never happen.

Great suggestions. I would go back to 15 rounds and we definitely need boxing back on network tv, even if it is on late Saturday or friday nights.

I agree with the same day weigh-ins. Losing and gaining weight in such short periods of time is messed up. I also agree with the one world title and putting boxing back on network television. But one can only dream.

Getting back on network TV isn't that simple. HBO gets all the big fights because HBO has the biggest budget and is willing to pay more for the big fights. Networks would have to find room in their budgets for boxing, be confident they'd be able to charge advertisers/sponsors relatively high rates to keep up with HBO's checkbook, and promoters/boxers would have to be confident they'd be able to make as much or more money with network that they do with HBO.

I don't think it's impossible, especially for some of the lesser known stars. But it's a long road and there's a lot of risk involved for all parties.

point (1).. we already have boxing commisions

A single federal commission would be much more appropriate for each country, in my opinion.

point (2).. weigh-in the day of the fight leaves a boxer dehydrated and insuffisant time to re-hydrate

I disagree. For many years fighters weighed in the day of the fight and there were no more deaths in boxing then. To top that off there were more professional fighters from the 20 through the 60's and 70's than there is today. Same day weigh ins protect the integrity of a weight class much more than weigh ins that occur almost two days before a fight and allow a fighter to sometimes blow up 2 and 3 weight classes.

point (3).. without the sanction bodies we would then only have World Championship fights once or twice a year from the undisputed title holder, sanctioning bodies titles are great for TV the real boxing fans make their own mind up about who they think is the real world champion in each weight division regarless of the alphabet bodies.

Without the sanctioning bodies we'd have the top fighters consistently fighting other top fighters to earn the right to fight for the title..

Boxing was a staple of network tv for years. Putting it back now would allow us o see more up and coming fighters as well as fighters who aren't enough of a draw to be on cable or PPV channels.

What do you say historians?

Number 1 is a no brainer, and the biggest thing holding boxing back. The elimination of sanctioning bodies definitely falls under this. Just look at UFC, it has really taken off because of Dana White bringing everything in and organizing it. This would also play into the Ring Magazine title being the official title as maybe that doesn't happen, but the official boxing commission would have their belt.

Number 10 is also a no brainer, and the biggest thing I can't understand. What better way to get people back into boxing than actually making it available for everyone to see.

I like the idea to extend rounds to 13, 15 is never coming back and making championship fights 13 rounds would be great to compromise.

Don't really like the idea of weigh ins the day of the fight, that's something that seems to have been abolished for a reason. Can't be healthy if fighters are starving themselves the day of the fight. Maybe restrictions on how much you can rehydrate would be cool, wouldn't mind that. Also, eliminate some weight classes.

Like your ideas except for the one about same day weigh ins, but boxing is a sport where old tradition runs deep and corruption reigns, it will be very hard to change.
