I've noticed lately that whenever an musical artist, especially a rapper branches out and tries too be creative by introducing new sounds or adjusting their image they are instantly labeled "sellouts" or just called plain "whack" .

I've always been under the impression that true hip-hop was in it's purest form a personal exhibition of lyrical and visual freedom which is used to creatively represent any and or all aspects of your life, not only your surroundings but also your thoughts and interest.

I have no problem with experimentation. But if it sucks it sucks. I see people like 808's, I just couldn't get into it other than a few joints. Common did some **** with Electric Circus that was not too good in my opinion.

If your "Experimental Music" contains autotune and a garbage rock album then yes it's going to get hate cause it SUCKS.

You didn't see anyone get on the Beastie Boys for their instrumental album or for Q-Tip for that Kamaal The Abstract album or for Jay-Z's album with Linkin Park.

Because they weren't the steaming turds that 808s and Rebirth were......

Honestly Lil Wayne gets alotta hate but hes one of the most experimental musicians ever in any genre. Hes switched up his sound alot, several different times. I respect him for trying different things, but at the same time...90% of the time, **** AUTOTUNE and **** his new rock album. Other then that, hes tried alotta new things that I like. Hes one of my top 10 favorite rappers

Maybe overrated by some backpackers, but outside of them, not many people have even heard of Can O or listened to the "The Cold Vein," which is definitely in my top 10 favorite hip-hop records.

But they haven't don jack **** since then collaboratively.

People don't like change. Most people dislike music that doesn't have a sample. And I think sampling music should not be more respected than someone who's doing it all original - no sample. Not matter what genre you're in, music is an art form. If you make the same ole bull**** and afraid to take risk...you can't call yourself anytime type of artist/music or survive in any genre of music. People don't listen but will be quick to dismiss and say it's wack.

There is a way to experiment and still be dope, for example Outkast. They've done different things and still came off as fresh.

According to most people an artist first (If lucky - second) CD will be labeled as the classic one. No matter how ill the artist further CD's are people will always hate on it. Problem is, music shows what fase the artist is in - regarding his life. As the artist grows so does the music. I think most people don't follow an artist too close anymore and therefore fails to see the essence of the music. Instead people are looking for ''track of the week'' not caring who made it and if it's forgotten in a month. Personly I enjoy when a rapper I like comes up with a new style.

I remember a while back Cormega said that he didn't like **** like Atmosphere because he didn't think it was real hip hop. I took that as him saying he doesn't like hip hop deversifying itself.

There's a difference between being "experimental" and being "Innovative"

Just because you're different doesn't mean you're dope.

I agree but I think sampling can be an art form within it's self, when done right.
Kind of cool how someone like Dj.Muggs can find some old obscure music and make a modern beat out of it.
