View Full Version : Williams vs Martinez
Dan... 12-13-2009, 05:03 PM Thoughts on this fight?
I've been away with no internet so I only got round to watching this fight on the weekend. Absolute belter of a fight, really enjoyed it. Who did you guys have winning? Who would you pick in a rematch? Who do you think both guys should fight next?
nachorjj 12-13-2009, 05:09 PM I got Martinez 115-114
Sergio Martinez 12-13-2009, 05:28 PM martinez was robbed. sergio is the best 154 and 160 fighter in the world imo. he beats any1 from 147 to 160.
amazing fighter

I was impressed by him as well. I knew he was good but I didn't think he was that good.
I don't think you can call it a robbery. There were far too many clear Williams rounds and 50/50 rounds for that. I would have been fine with Sergio getting the nod but no way it was a robbery IMO.
I'd like to see a rematch, thats for sure.
Toney Loc 12-13-2009, 05:34 PM Sexy Sergio won on clean punching and making Paul miss a bunch of times.

I just think sergio landed the cleaner punchers and more eye catching shots. And williams didnt even properly drop him, he hit him on the shoulder.
watching that fight live was insane do.......
Sergio would give boxing lessons to Pavlik, Angulo, Williams in the rematch, Cotto, Manny any1 from 147 to 160 sergio would beat including your boy mundine.....

I'm not sure if he wins the rematch. Williams seemed to adjust a little and definately had the better of it down the stretch when his volume seemed to overwhelm Sergio a little. I think a rematch would be just as close.

Goosen had those judges paid off. Thus Sergio being robbed. If Martinez would of got his rightly deserved victories over Cintron and Williams, he would be a top 5 p4p fighter now.
But due to crooked judges, this insn't the case. I would love Floyd or Manny to step up and fight Martinez. Both would get a ass whipen imo!

You are speaking trash IMO. The fight was very close. Thinking any other way is ridiculous.

You're a idiot. Sergio was robbed. Just a bitter Williams fan.........
Martinez would come to Aussie and kick Mundine's ass. Which is a bitter pill to swallow for you......

No, he wasn't robbed. And I'm not a Williams fan. I thought it was a close fight, Sergio probably just deserved the nod but in no way was it a robbery.
You seem to have an obsession with Mundine, and you hang around the Aussie Lounge a bit...
Hmmm, I wonder...
Philfy 12-13-2009, 07:52 PM Yeah, this one was a cracker.
I had Martinez up by one round 115-113. He really had control of Williams early.
If they rematched, I would pick Martinez to win for sure. Williams was walking into those right hooks all night long. The turning point of the match IMO was at the end of the 3rd or 4th round when Williams landed a bomb on Martinez just before the bell. He hurt him pretty bad, and Martinez didn't look the same after, slowing down and allowing Williams back into the fight.
Don't forget that Martinez only had a month to prepare for this fight because Pavlik pulled out.
The official judges scores were 114-114, 115-113 and 119-110 to Williams.
Scoring the fight to either fighter 115-113 would have been fine, but the 119-110 scoreline was horrendous, and in that sense I feel Martinez was ''robbed''.
To be honest, this fight really highlighted some of Williams' shortcomings as a fighter. It's just his crazy reach and work rate that keeps him in the game.
Future match-ups: Martinez v Sturm

I agree, that score was a complete joke. That judge, as Lampley said, must be completely blind.
Williams certainly got hit by that right hook all night, but to his credit he kept coming. I always said Paul was one of the most overhyped fighters of all time. All this "the next Tommy Hearns" crap was just ridiculous.
skyler 12-14-2009, 10:27 AM Only just got around to seeing the fight aswell.. not a highway robbery but I thought Martinez deserved the win.. first time seeing Martinez and man was I impressed!
boxing_great 12-15-2009, 03:15 AM I had Williams up by 1 .
could have been a draw though.
