View Full Version : Superfight Blowouts
TysonForeman 11-28-2004, 02:55 PM What are some hugely hyped Superfights that turned into total one sided ass kickings?
The one that jumps to mind is Tyson-Spinks. Two Undefeated heavyweight champions come together. Could have been another Ali-Frazier... 91 seconds later it's over.
dingus 11-28-2004, 03:01 PM I would have to say Foreman vs. Frazier.
TysonForeman 11-28-2004, 05:55 PM Was that super hyped up though? Or was it just another title defense?
Louis vs. Schmeling II. That was one of the most devastating 1 round KOs I've ever seen and the bout was hyped as the fight of the century.
tntkid 11-28-2004, 11:38 PM Barrera - Hamed
Supposed to be one of the all-time featherweight battles, instead we got Marco kicking Naseem's ass for 12 dull rounds.:(
foremanfan 11-29-2004, 11:25 AM Got to be Spinks - Tyson by a mile. Them hype was unbelievable and finally we were going to see a guy that could test Tyson. After 91 seconds of testing Spinks said Mike had passed.
Tyson Vs Spinks. It's got to be the shortest lasting super hyped fight of all time.
paulmmv 11-30-2004, 02:45 AM i would hafe to say ali vs liston or even tyson vs douglas
foremanfan 11-30-2004, 12:04 PM Also as I didn't enjoy the ending of Holyfield - Tyson2 and was expecting such a great battle I found that highly disappointing.
jabsRstiff 11-30-2004, 12:13 PM Roy Jones vs. James Toney
Roy won every second of the fight, a no-contest.

Sorry this is unrelated to boxing, but Tysonforeman I heard that Ken is gonna lose this week on Jeapody on Wednesday. One similiarity to boxing though, champions usually never go undefeated(Ali,tyson,RJJ,chavez, etc) One exception, Marciano.
TysonForeman 11-30-2004, 01:45 PM Yeah, today might be the day, it's Ken's 75th game. I've got a very bad feeling...
What you said about champions not going undefeated is very true. It's almost impossible to be your best all the time. One little slip or mistake, or just an off night and you're no longer undefeated.
Champoreeno 11-30-2004, 02:19 PM Trinidad-Hopkins
jabsRstiff 11-30-2004, 02:20 PM Does anyone know the answer that brings Ken down ?
plexmc 11-30-2004, 06:42 PM Tyson Vs Spinks. It's got to be the shortest lasting super hyped fight of all time.
I feel u on that
P@pasmurf 11-30-2004, 07:54 PM The greatest moment in tysons career- The spinks KO. Everyone thought spinks would challenge him, and mike showed exactly what he was in that era- UNSTOPPABLE.
Kid Achilles 12-03-2004, 03:23 PM Joe Louis- Max Schmeling II belongs here as well. The manner in which Louis dispatched Schmeling in a single round remains an incredible sight to this day. Mike Tyson claims that as a teenager he would watch film of the fight over and over, in awe of Joe Louis's punching power and ferocity.
Great 12-04-2004, 07:39 AM Marciano-Walcott-2
Colonel Jones 12-04-2004, 06:39 PM Spinks tyson was a disgrace
Kimmy 12-04-2004, 08:06 PM The biggest flopof a super fight was the forth coming, 2nd October 1980. This fight was as big as Ali Vs Foreman but because of the result and the way the fight mapped out people just forget about it. Muhammad Ali was favorite over Larry Holmes by fight time, he looked in terrific shape but it was all for show. Larry Holmes pasted him for 10 one sided rounds.
mic573 12-04-2004, 08:28 PM Trinidad-Hopkins
I would say this one also because it was supposed to be one the greatest middleweight bouts but turned into one of the greatest middleweight performances by Hopkins. I'd say the biggest flop of a big time hyped superfight would be Delahoya/Trinidad. Both fighters didn't exactly live up to the hype that night.
RobbieD 12-04-2004, 10:51 PM Tyson vs. Spinks for sure. Tyson/Holyfield II was a farce but by then, I expected that nonsense from Tyson. Most Frank Bruno fights too especially the second Tyson fight (obviously Bruno was only a big deal here).
Nick1998 12-06-2004, 11:50 PM DLH vs Hopkins. I was so pumped for this fight and then I was totally let down. Tito vs. Mayorga made up for it though.
Louis vs. Schmeling II. That was one of the most devastating 1 round KOs I've ever seen and the bout was hyped as the fight of the century.
Tyson/Spinks compares to that in how it ended, but doesn't even come close to the amount of hype or importance that was surrounding the rematch between Louis and Schmeling.
Louis/Schmeling II is the easy and most logical pick for this category!
jayrichardse 01-31-2005, 01:08 AM moore and foreman
jayrichardse 01-31-2005, 01:10 AM tyson and spinks
jack_the_rippuh 01-31-2005, 10:36 AM Why did he get banned?
marvelous_TG 01-31-2005, 01:33 PM Spinks tyson was a disgrace
Why was that fight a disgrace if i may ask?
jedihillis 01-31-2005, 04:22 PM Tyson-Holyfield 2. What a dissapointment. Coulda been a great fight.
heckski 01-31-2005, 04:46 PM I'd say Cooney v Foreman (Cooney takes a real dirt nap in round 2)
And Duran v Hearns (Duran gives Hagler all he could handle and Hearns turns around and nearly decapitates the Panamanian Legend in round 2)
Johnny_Rocket 01-31-2005, 05:58 PM Louis vs. Schmeling II. That was one of the most devastating 1 round KOs I've ever seen and the bout was hyped as the fight of the century.
I agree completely. This was a huge fight at the time, what with WW2 goin on and all and the accusations of Schmelling being a nazi.
jedihillis 01-31-2005, 09:04 PM I'd say Cooney v Foreman
Was that really supposed to be a big fight? I didn't think it was touted as anything big.
Hot Topic 02-01-2005, 03:55 PM Azumah Nelson-Genaro Hernandez
Lewis-Holyfield I
Mosley-Forrest I
Mayweather-Corrales
Pacquiao-Barrera
Zale-Graziano III
lmnorw 02-25-2005, 09:18 PM tyson vs douglas wasnt a blow out it took 10 rounds and it wasnt a superfight.and nor was tyson spinks..spinks wasnt a good heavyweight..it had to be foreman vs frazier
Kimmy 02-25-2005, 09:31 PM Lewis Vs Holyfield wasn`t a blow out. lewis won but they called it a draw but it wasn`t as one sided as people said. lewis gave allot of those rounds away in that fight!
shemmue 04-30-2005, 04:58 PM cooney vs. holmes cooney was supposed to be the great white hope holmes gave him a beating for 13 rnds.
Dempsey 1919 04-04-2006, 03:53 PM uhmmm, hello!! nobody said dempsey-willard?
ali-terrel deserves a mention as well.
The greatest moment in tysons career- The spinks KO. Everyone thought spinks would challenge him, and mike showed exactly what he was in that era- UNSTOPPABLE.
Yeah sure, everyone thought Spinks would challenge Tyson, yet that's why the odds were lopsided in Tyson's favour at 6-1 or 7-1...
"The Experts Say Tyson Is A Cinch" - New York Times, June 27th, 1988.
Read the opening pages of Jose Torres' book on Tyson, and those exact sentiments are expressed there, as well, as none of the "experts" that were present at the final press conferance were giving Spinks any sort of chance in that fight (and back then, either did I).
Shit, at only a 4-1 underdog, even Trevor Berbick was given a better chance of defeating Tyson than was Spinks.
RAESAAD 04-04-2006, 04:33 PM Calzaghe/Lacy although it was not a mega-fight to some. :(
Southpaw Stinger 04-04-2006, 04:35 PM Calzaghe/Lacy although it was not a mega-fight to some.
That was a great fight to watch! I though Lacy would win and got a great surprise when fellow Brit Calzaghe started knocking the shit out of Lacy.
Calzaghe will probably be over confident now and get destroyed in his next fight!

Yeah respect due...he fought a great fight.I really hope Tarver/Calzaghe pops off someday and I will be looking for Tarver to avenge the loss for his fellow Floridian.
Southpaw Stinger 04-04-2006, 04:54 PM One things for sure, Lacy will dominate the division once Calazaghe retires.

You are making me excited about his next fight already.I don't know what to think that was not the Lacy I was used to seeing March 4th and can't wait to see him fight again.
Dempsey1238 04-04-2006, 05:23 PM Joe Gans vs Terry McGoven.
This was a fight with 2 SUPER Fighters, and McGoven just walks in and kos Gans in 2 rounds(And droping Gans like 5 times in the process.)
SuzieQ49 04-04-2006, 10:53 PM Joe Gans vs Terry McGoven.
This was a fight with 2 SUPER Fighters, and McGoven just walks in and kos Gans in 2 rounds(And droping Gans like 5 times in the process.)
gans took a dive. gans would have slaughtered the smaller mcgovern
Dempsey1238 04-04-2006, 10:58 PM after seeing the fight complete. I can see Dr Z's point in the fight.
Gans just got caught. a good right hand put Gans down, and he got up. THE PROBLEM lies with the rules of the day, no Netrual Coner rule. McGoven stood over Gans, and wail away on him as soon as Gans got up.
A fighter that takes a dive does not DROP to the canvas 7 times in 2 rounds. and Gans look hurt. Also your forgetting that McGoven was a ALL time puncher.
Dempsey1238 04-04-2006, 11:12 PM ok I counted the knockdowns. and Gans was floor 9 times.
