View Full Version : WTF up with the contender 5 round sissy bouts?!

Ok I know 5 round boxing is good for tv since it keeps the fighters active and the rounds busy with plenty of good hits for close up drama, but really....are these guys supposed to be anything but amateurs?

I read some threads where some of you think the contender is good for boxing for exposure but whoever wins is going to get his ass beat down in a real fight to 12. If I was the winner, I'd take the million and retire!

I'd rather see stallone and sugar get in the ring and watch sugar beat his ass.

5 rounds are sisy bouts. Hell, there is more action in these bouts than in many heavyweight 10 round fights. Anyway, could you finish a 5 round bout with a professional fighter?...........Rockin' :boxing:

This isn't about me since I'm not on the contender show. These guys are supposedly professionals...case in the point last week's episode with juan dropping out and everyone saying he fought like an amateur, etc. Even sugar refers to these guys as pros and yet here they are fighting 5 min bouts. Thats butterbean territory for fat ass super heavies.

They already cut/edit the bouts for tv, they can do the same with 10~12 rds as well. THE contender who wins this thing is going to get title shots from the exposure and celebrity, too bad he's going to get slaughtered by the real pros.

Why?!!

Honestly dude, you're not making sense here.
The fact that they're fighting 5 x 3 min. bouts has absolutely NOTHING to do with how they'll do once they fight outside of the show's format. Infact, the vast majority of the contestants have already fought in 10 - 12 rounds contests before being picked for the show. Jesse Brinkley, Peter Manfredo,Anthony Bonsante, Ishe Smith, Salamci, Lange, Farza... hell, Johnathan Reid for William Joppy for a world title. These guys ARE "real pros", they're not begining clubfighters.

These fighters are real pros...calm down and listen to every word I tell you.

Many of these fighters ( I believe most of them) have fought ten rounds and been very successful doing so. When you watch a ten round fight you will notice that the fighters more often than not come out at a measured pace, say it with me again "measured pace"

In the contender it is a whole different world, they are fighting for a million bucks and they have only five rounds to get their work in before the cards come down. All of the fights have been fought at a ferocious pace and this is a direct result of the 1)rounds and 2) money.

These are professionals i promise you...keep in mind that I know everything!

One thing I hate about the show is they throw up all of the time...*you think he can last the whole 5* when majority of these guys are fighting 8 rounds as a minimum....I realize it is to make the show more intriguing but it is just annoying...Sly acts like he doesnt know ****....Possibly True?

I still like the show.

Cooper lost to Reggie Strickland for christs sake...I wouldnt exactly call him a contender and not surprised by the outcome at all...How did he get chosen by losing to Strickland anyways?

Um when I saw Juan fight I was not impressed at all. It looked like he threw all his skills out the window and just went headhunting.

Hate to be the odd man out here, but I dont care for the show much. It's too dramatized, and so much of it seems fake. I'm just disappointed with the way they are doing the thing in general....and I waited a long time for it to air.

Well then I wish they'd fight like it. I was only impressed by Ishe, Ahmed, and Anthony. The rest looked like they could barely keep up the pace and asleep on their feet by the 5th rounds. If they are real pros, why not fight 10 ~ 12 rd bouts then?

Where did they find the rest of these guys? Juan fought like a ***** and dipped out like one.

Gotta be true. Sly doesn't deserve to stand on the same hallowed ground as Sugar. Sly's boxing resume consists of "fighting" Mr T and Dolph Lundgren in special effects, both of whom would have beat the tar out of him in a real fight! They should have picked a real boxing legend to stand opposite Sugar.

I agree...what happened to the other boxing show that I thought Fox was going to air opposite Contender?

The Next Great Champ...it was done a few months ago and the winner of that goes to my gym:D

Sylvester Stallone is a boxing icon, yes never fought pro, but he's soooo famous cuz of rocky, and to tell u the truth I most likely wouldn't have been boxing if it werent for that movie...

Sylvester Stallone may have changed my life forever
Sly knocked out Mr. T and Ivan Drago so his got big names on his resumer to!

GO ROCKY!!!!!!

lol
I think they should leave the training advice to the trainers and sugar ray...

I saw him tryin to show Manfredo somethin like his the real rocky haahahhaha!

but Sly is the man!

#2. I know SOOOOOOOOo many people watchin the show that aint boxing fans, hell i know some people that started boxing ever since watchin that show...all cuz of SLY

^^^

Fair enough. I admit I find it the most interesting reality show I've seen in a long time. I actually look forward to every new week. The beating Anthony gave that cowboy guy pissed me off though. It seemed so one-sided. I hope Ishe or Joey wins it all.

why the hell would they choose them if they didn't stand a chance in the real world? c'mon now, the fights are action packed, and they have the equivalent of a much longer fight.

I have to agree here, it didn't seem like he had real talent when it came to boxing. He was throwing his hands around like a ***** while trying to hit the other guy in the head.
