I tried a few wing chun classes earlier this year. It wasn't a great idea for me personally as boxing punches are completely different, so it didn't seem natural at all, and I decided there wasn't much point trying to mix two styles up.

Although I don't doubt wing chun's potential effectiveness and technical superiority over some other arts, I couldn't help but wonder whether spending all that time learning technicalities, and not really doing any proper sparring would really benefit someone when the **** hit the fan. I'm by no means saying some of those guys couldn't kick ass, nor am I hating or anything like that.

The best person to see the two styles mixed right now is Manny Pac. He incorporates it into his boxing style in the form of JKD (Bruce Lee's Philosophy).

Notice when Pac is throwing maching gun punches WHILE on the move, this is a product of wing chun/JKD.

I agree, proper sparring is key to engraving wing chun into your reflexes. I would venture to say that without proper sparring in ANY martial art the person will be left to the wolves lol.....BUT on the other hand taking the time to embed these techniques into your mind and body is key to proper execution, Bruce Lee wasn't just great because of his speed and power but those two elements are a product of his skilled execution of those techniques, feel me.

Oh absolutely. But I'm just skeptical that doing something a couple of times per week with no real sparring will be useful when under 'real' pressure. I guess it's like anything in life, the more you do it, the better you are going to be. A taxi driver is probably going to be a hell of a lot better at driving than your average driver who just drives to and from work etc.

Like I said, I'm not trying to **** on wing chun or any other martial art for that matter, as I'm sure there are guys who probably could kick ass even in a real situation. But I really think you probably have to spar almost every day to be truly good at it under stress.

Agreed....I sparred from day one....it sounds like that school you went to must not emphasis sparring as they should.

imo the ideal fighting style differs person to person based off physical attributes and capabilities
