Did anybody else happen to catch the Holyfield-Qawi replay on ESPN Classic last night? Turned out to be a great fight...I realize it was only Evanders 12th pro fight, but the commentators seemed extremely biased towards Qawi the entire fight. They really started to get on my nerves with it too. To listen to them for atleast the first 8 rd's you'd think that Qawi was spanking Evander (I think not!) and that Evander had bitten off too much, too soon :confused: All the while, it was Qawi that kept coming in with his head for the ENTIRE fight (no headbutts was a pure miracle!) and repeatedly hit below the belt, while the ref. looked stupidly on and never did a thing about it. Other than all that, it was bittersweet watching the man back in his day :( (why did I start an entire thread about this?? I dont know..I guess cause I could :p )

I didn't see it but I like the way ESPN is putting on more of a variety of classic fights latley. Its gets boring when they just show Ali-Frazier and Ali-Foreman.

They were totally biased toward Holyfield you liar and you know it. Quawi was the agressor the whole fight and landed more cleaner harder punches. Are you HOlyfield's promoter or something? Quawi deserved the descision in that fight pretty clearly.

I agree, it was a great fight! It was extremely close, and both guys fought their hearts out..my main problem with it was the constant low blows thrown by Qawi, and the ref's refusal to do anything about it. :eek: Even the commentators (that did seem to be pulling for Qawi) said more than once that a pt. should have been taken. And he kept coming in with his head too.
Other than that, it was great! I'm really looking forward to the replay of Holyfield-Moorer too :D

But yep, Leonard put on a spectacular show that night, against a bigger guy, with reach and power advantage. It was sheer determination that won him that fight, nothing else.

I wish ESPN Classic would show more fights from the 80's. They show alot of older stuff (Marciano, etc.) and like love to watch the older fights, but I missed alot of the great fights in the 80's being out of the country so often during my military service, and many of them are very difficult to find.

Leonard had a pretty good punch, so I wouldn't really classify Hearns as having a weak chin. Maybe not on the order of Marciano and the like, but not weak. Great fighter, though. He controlled the vast majority of the fight, very easily, using his strengths. It wasn't until he got out of his gameplan that things went to hell in a handbasket.

I haven't seen that fight yet, so I'll be watching...of course, if I'd seen it before, then I'd have to watch it again anyway ;)

I wish ESPN Classic would show more fights from the 80's. They show alot of older stuff (Marciano, etc.) and like love to watch the older fights, but I missed alot of the great fights in the 80's being out of the country so often during my military service, and many of them are very difficult to find.

Yep, much better fight than I expected, too. I was surprised to find that both guys were pretty dangerous fellows at that point in their careers :)

They were totally biased toward Holyfield you liar and you know it. Quawi was the agressor the whole fight and landed more cleaner harder punches. Are you HOlyfield's promoter or something? Quawi deserved the descision in that fight pretty clearly.

Did anybody else happen to catch the Holyfield-Qawi replay on ESPN Classic last night? Turned out to be a great fight...I realize it was only Evanders 12th pro fight, but the commentators seemed extremely biased towards Qawi the entire fight. They really started to get on my nerves with it too. To listen to them for atleast the first 8 rd's you'd think that Qawi was spanking Evander (I think not!) and that Evander had bitten off too much, too soon :confused: All the while, it was Qawi that kept coming in with his head for the ENTIRE fight (no headbutts was a pure miracle!) and repeatedly hit below the belt, while the ref. looked stupidly on and never did a thing about it. Other than all that, it was bittersweet watching the man back in his day :( (why did I start an entire thread about this?? I dont know..I guess cause I could :p )

I dont doubt that at all...there were a few times when I thought both of them were sure to go down from some serious hard punches. Both must have excellent chins!
The commentators made a bit of a 'deal' out of that being Holyfields first 15 rd'er too..they didnt seem to think he'd make it the full fight. He really surprised them by not only lasting the full fight, but by winning it as well. That was just one of the many, many times he surprised everyone by winning fights that he just wasnt expected to win.
Great fight, and I'm really looking forward to the replay tonight against Moorer!
