That guy really annoys me, when ever i watch an old fight his commentary is possibly the most annoying, he has a terrible voice is always biased he completely ruins a lot of old fights. I remember he always used to rip into Frank Bruno and he kept calling Pernell Whitaker pee wee.

Not sure if Steward and Lampley are less biased.

In the 1980's, while teaming up with Marv Albert, Ferdie was IMO an excellent commentator. In the 1990's, while teaming with Steve Albert and Bobby Czyz on Showtime, he was god awful. He kissed King's ass and was totally biased whenever tyson and Chavez fought, openly rooting for them. He never took those two to task for some of the boorish behavior they exhibited during their fights. During the November 1991 fight between Buddy Mcgirt and Simon Brown, he continually ripped McGirt's punching power. meanwhile, McGirt was treating Brown like an Amateur. He questioned McClellan's heart while he was laid out on the canvas almost dead against Benn.

I agree. Especially about McClellan. How does a docter not see there was something wrong with the guy? Instead he acted like he quit like a coward.

His voice was annoying, he could not form a single sentence without stuttering badly and he always had a negative tone. I'm sure we all saw the latest Ali-Frazier documentary where he showed he was still the same a-hole he always was.

Pachecco had some good moments mainly earler on network tv, but during his stint at Showtime he and Czyz definately gave us "C-" commentary on a B+ network

LOL, he was all over Trinidad's jockstrap, gotta admit I was a Tito nuthugger myself, felt sorry for the opponent thou, and so was Czyz and Albert but not as bad. I still think Lampley and Steward are worse.

He once compared Trinidad to Sugar Ray Robinson, that's how biased he was

I know he cant score a fight objectively if its a fighter he is riding the balls of.

He actually had Chavez beating Randall and thought Whitaker was slightly ahead of Chavez, despite the fact that Whitaker was schooling him the entire night. He told Chavez after he beat a washed up taylor the 2nd time that he was still the best

That was pushing it but everybody kinda good gets compared to Sugar Ray, because he was the measuring tool. Like everybody in basketball is compared to Michael Jordon ie.. he's the next...

Doesn't sound bitter to me and wasn't really lying when discussing Joe Frazier either really.Pacheco may have been a terrible commentator(in your opinion and not mine)but atleast he doesn't beat up women.

I agree with this whole heartedly. Neither Cosell or Dunphy needed an entire team around them to describe the action with clear concise intelligence as well as an unbiased outlook.

The thing with Cosell was he usually worked alone: Just him and a microphone provided both the blow-by-blow and the color commentary :boxing:

Arthur Mercante did the color for the Holmes-Norton fight, one of the few times Cosell didn't work by himself. Mercante was tremendous in his analysis of the fight, and you could hear the respect and admiration Cosell had for Arthur as he spoke. had Mercante become a full time color commentator, he would have been among the best. Not like the shills that have been dirtying the airwaves since I was a kid.

I remember that! Mercante was one of the all-time best referees so he knew his stuff. The thing I really liked about Cosell was that he could take a crap fight and make it seem like an event: Not even Dunphy could do that.

Think one of the reasons Mercante didn't do much more commentary was Cossell accrording to Mercante Cossell behaved like a spoilt egomaniacal prick. I'm not a fan of Cossell just think he was one of these guys like Sugar and Fleischer who were round the fame so many years their voice was given far more kudos than it warranted.

Why it took Cosell until this year to be inducted into the IBHOF I could never understand. Listen to the way he called a fight; he made each fight sound like an important event. He also did his research and would educate you as to each other's past. He was also not afraid to call out a fighter or promoter if they were involved in a b.s. fight.

Lampley irrates me, spends more time talking about anything other than the fight.

That is one thing Cosell and Dunphy didn't do; they never spoke of other things that had nothing to do with the fight they were calling.

Pacheco was terrible,just terrible.Extrmely bias,annoying voice,awfukly wrong,etc.

His Showtime stint was awful nad if you think he was better in the 80's listen to his commentary for Leonard-Duran I.

Only good thing about him is that he could speak spanish and thus be a translator aswell.

Howard Cosell's commentary of the George foreman Ron Lyle scrap remains the single greatest play by play calling of a fight ever seen.

Cossell knew how to capture the energy of a fight and could make a great fight even greater. When a fiight stunk then he would say so,it's one of the reason's why I have always like Larry Merchant too.

boxing is missing the well spoken fighters doing color commentary, like Ken Norton and Ray Leonard during their day.George foreman was always interesting to listen to aswell.

To this day, Cosell has two of the greatest ko calls of all time. Foreman-Frazier: "Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!!!!! Martin-Liston, after Martin puts Liston to sleep: "The career of Sonny Liston is over!!!!!!!!"
