He looks eerily similar to my relatives from my dad's mother's side of my family who are part Bavarian, I bet he is from North west Bavaria. The similarity between him and my aunt in appearence is profound.

The Pope's choose their own name for whatever reason. He probably has alot of dedication to Saint Benedict or to previous Pope's named Benedict so he chose the name Benedict.

Pope John Paul II. Took the name Pope John Paul II to honor Pope John Paul I who was assasinated 29 days or so into his pontificate. The name the Pope chooses perhaps in some cases gives you some insight to what their ideas are theologically.

At 78 years old you gotta wonder, is he past his prime?

78 is pretty old for a Pope. However I think alot of Pope's are elected around that age so I dont think he is past his prime.

Pope John Paul II was elected in his fifties I do believe and died at 82.....It seems kind of odd to appoint a guy at such a frail age...Perhaps he could be one of those abnormal living humans who live to be like 115.

Did you all know this guy was part of the "Hitler Youth", but that's only because you were forced to under Nazi Germany when you were a kid.

... Oh yeah, and according to Nostradamus, this pope will be our last pope before the end times.

Just look at how evil he looks in this snap

He's gonna be a transition pope from the looks of it.
Hopefully they elect a young pope again in the next round,
so we can expect more continuity....

He's not expected to last long. Actually when they voted in John Paul 2 at such a "young" age it was a bit unusual. Most of the time they want to bring a pope in when he's in his 70s so he lasts no more than a decade or so. There have been like 296 popes so far, which is quite a bit when you consider that this is over around 2000 years.

My guess is that you won't hear from much him while he's in office. He'll kiss babies and smile for the cameras, or whatever.

Speaking of popes, does anyone have a picture of Bowe handing a pair of autographed gloves to John Paul 2? Apparently the shot is pretty hilarious.

Never seen that photo, I would be interested to see it as well. I do know he gave him the same gloves he beat Holyfield with...Kind of humorous although the pope was actually known to be a sports fan.

Pope John Paul the 1st is "suspected" by some to have been killed but the offical cause of death was heart attack. However, who can blame those that think he was killed because the vatican lied about who found him, the time of death and such. Not to mention things personal effects were missing from his quarters. An Angels and Demons senario (for those that have read it) is what is believed happend to him...

The whole idea of an elected mortal "ruling" a Christian faith is blasphemous at best.
