View Full Version : Which fighter has the biggest fan base in boxing? Alpha Male 04-18-2005, 09:24 AM My choices: DLH Gatti Tyson Barrera Morales Pacman Roy Jones Castillo puppy_dogg 04-18-2005, 09:30 AM you forgot the klit brother's i would have to say them and pacman for sure Truth 04-18-2005, 09:32 AM Iron Mike Tyson cupcrazy01 04-18-2005, 09:34 AM Tito should be on that list... puppy_dogg 04-18-2005, 09:40 AM Tito should be on that list... yep, forgot about him. the PR's are in full force when tito comes out- Tha Greatest 04-18-2005, 09:40 AM My choices: DLH Gatti Tyson Barrera Morales Pacman Roy Jones Castillo I don't agree with DLH and RJJ but my choices are Hatton-sold out tickets in less than 2 hours Gatti-who doesnt like this guy Pacman-yes, the nuthuggers... Morales Felix Tito Trinidad-more nuthuggers Hopkins-JUST SO EXCITING! NO JK! This guy dont got to many fans. ottoevans 04-18-2005, 09:53 AM without a doubt Mike tyson and Oscar. Its a fact they are the gihest paid fighters in the business, in regards of ppv and money they bring to the table. Oscar is the 6 highest paid athlete in the world thats including Tiger Woods, Shaq, MJ and others Bombardier 04-18-2005, 09:57 AM Outside the ring (aka Hollywood and corporate phonies) no doubt it's Tyson and De La Hoya. With real boxing fans De La Hoya's fanbase drops considerably, at least these days, though Tyson still has a huge following. Add to that list Mayweather, Trinidad, Gatti and Morales and you might have the top 5. Of course Paq probably deserves to be up there, as well. Honourable mentions go to Vitali, Toney and Kostya. I'm sure I've missed somebody  . puppy_dogg 04-18-2005, 09:58 AM dlh and tyson will always be the biggest "draws" but i dont think that means they have the most die hard fans. i know people that have never seen a boxing match in their life but they hear the name tyson and they order ppv's and gather people to watch. dlh and tyson do have lots of nut-huggers im sure but they also bring the "casual" fans out of the woodwork Bombardier 04-18-2005, 10:02 AM dlh and tyson will always be the biggest "draws" but i dont think that means they have the most die hard fans. i know people that have never seen a boxing match in their life but they hear the name tyson and they order ppv's and gather people to watch. A lot of people grew up watching Tyson, though, and will watch him fight anyone. I'd consider them die hard fans especially because I'm sure most of them know that he's pretty shot these days. People who know a lot about boxing still like Tyson because he was the man when they were kids. ottoevans 04-18-2005, 10:08 AM naw mayweather proved that he doesnt have a big fan base when he faught Bruseles at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, the arena was emptier than when the Harlem Glotrothers where there, im dead serious SnoopySmurf 04-18-2005, 10:08 AM There's like 120 million people in the Philippines. And only one marquee name : Manny Pacquiao. Mexico's population would be divided among too many Mexican champs/contenders. But DLH would have the biggest slice. Tito, like Manny, has an island nation of PR and New York City behind him. ottoevans 04-18-2005, 10:12 AM yeah i think PR people back their fighters till the death. RwK 04-18-2005, 10:56 AM naw mayweather proved that he doesnt have a big fan base when he faught Bruseles at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, the arena was emptier than when the Harlem Glotrothers where there, im dead serious Yeah. I believe that. The only posters on this forum who are fans of his, that I have seen post like it, would be Me, Jack, Mayweatherfan, Floydmayweather, Mic573, and Masterdirector. Small grouping compred to the "Floyd Haters" and diehard "Arturo Gatti" fans that also double as Floyd Haters. Bombardier 04-18-2005, 10:59 AM Yeah. I believe that. The only posters on this forum who are fans of his, that I have seen post like it, would be Me. Jack, Mayweatherfan, Floydmayweather, and Mic573. Yeah, it's hard to say, because a lot of people like to see him fight even if they don't like him. I try to watch as much Mayweather as I can cause he's really an amazing fighter...but as for what he's like out of the ring he pretty much alientaes everyone except his most diehard fans. Plus a lot of people don't get to know how good he really is because they've already made a point of hating him ahead of time. So I guess, yeah, he doesn't have a lot of what you might call "fans". Excellent post. Take what you just said: And that is how I feel about Mike Tyson. I am not a true fan of his, but I like to watch him fight. I dont approve of his "out of the ring" antics, but I like to watch him bomb people. Actually, I cant stand him when he is outside the ring. Inside, is another story. Its hard to hate him thoroughly, considering I have been kissing his ass lately. dangerousity 04-18-2005, 12:10 PM In terms of having the most widespread fans, I'd have to say Tyson & Gatti. Most people outside of US doesnt even know dela hoya and boxing fans outside US are not particularly crazy about him. In terms of raw numbers, The Pacman could very well be up there, as Merchant pointed out, the Elvis or Ali of the Phillippines... An estimated of 30million+ filipinos saw the fight vs Morales so thats pretty huge. Bombardier 04-18-2005, 12:47 PM Freitas, as well, has a big following if you're talking just pure numbers (Brazil is a damn big country). elveiel 04-18-2005, 12:51 PM These fighters have the largest fan base. Tito DLH Hatton Manny Pac Tyson Klitchko's Gatti Tszyu And like Bombardier said, Freitas. Some of these fighters have whole country behind them!! RwK 04-18-2005, 12:59 PM Nope. In terms of "actual fan base". John Ruiz has the most fans. There are so many in China that I lost count. I know half of them, and talk to them on the phone about his undefeated record, and brilliant ring tactics. Truth 04-18-2005, 01:07 PM Floyd is such a great fighter to watch because he is such a complete fighter and you see that in eveything he does in the ring. RwK 04-18-2005, 01:10 PM Floyd is such a great fighter to watch because he is such a complete fighter and you see that in eveything he does in the ring. You will not find many others, hard pressed to agree with us on that. He is extremely exciting, because of his versatility. And like I have been saying, the Augustus/Burton fight is one of the best fights I have seen. Period. Floyd is a warrior, believe it or not. joeboxer 04-18-2005, 01:13 PM Mike Tyson and Oscar De La Hoya are the only two fighters with a significant fan base. Alpha Male 04-18-2005, 01:42 PM Floyd is such a great fighter to watch because he is such a complete fighter and you see that in eveything he does in the ring. I agree. As much people dislike him, how can you not watch him, most of the haters watch him to see if he's gonna lose. The Troll 04-18-2005, 01:45 PM De La Hoya Tyson Morales Barrera Golota Pacquiuo Trinidad Hatton Tzyu Gatti Klistchkos James Toney AintGottaClue 04-18-2005, 01:46 PM the biggest fan base ever would be a half mexican, half PR kid. lmao can u imagine tito/coto fans crammed into the same arena with morales/barrera fans but are rooting for the same guy? my god Martin (Top Knowledge) 04-18-2005, 01:59 PM I don't think Tyson really has a massive fan base... He just sells a lot of tickets, because the casual boxing fan will tune in to PPV to see if he does something crazy again! Fan base fighters... (in no particular order) ODLH PACMAN HATTON KLITS TITO GATTI Them 6 have gotta be the big ones! Truth 04-18-2005, 02:08 PM I don't think Tyson really has a massive fan base... Go to this site: www.Tysontalk.com Trust me...he has fans... jack_the_rippuh 04-18-2005, 03:38 PM While I'm a Tyson fan, I think he has the most fans, him and De La Hoya, but I think people like Félix Trinidad and Manny Pacquiao have the most loyal fans. Boricua and Pinoys will kill a ***** for their hometown heroes. Off subject: Zab Judah kind of reminds me of Stephon Marbury for some reason.. |
