I was shocked but not saddened when guys like Tyson fell to Douglas and Tarver starched Jones Jr.

One fighter's loss that saddened me was when Arguello loss to Pryor, even though I liked both of them.

I was wondering what fighter you might have liked enough that you were actually moved to saddness when he lost?

Whitaker losing to Trinidad and Morales losing to Pacquiao were tough for me. Whitaker was a shell of the great fighter he once was and Trinidad didn't let him off the hook. Couldn't even hardly watch the conclusion of the third EM/MP fight.

Joe Louis against Rocky Marciano. Just kidding, I rather enjoyed that one. Watch me avy.

I suppose Mclellan against Benn. He didn't just lose a match he basicely lost his life. It looked like he was on his own in there with only him knowing something was wrong.

As a boy I couldn't sleep after the following losses:

Ali losing to Spinks
Arguello losing to Pryor
the No mas fight
Hearns losing to Leonard
Ali losing to Holmes

As a man theses losses saddened me:
Taylor losing to Chavez(1990)
Hearns draw with leonard
Toney losing to Jones
Mcclellan losing to Benn
Whitaker getting robbed vs Chavez
Cotto losing to margarito
Hopkins losing to taylor twice

A couple of the top of my head would be Frazier against Foreman in the first fight, the bravery of Frazier keep getting up and going forward. And of course Ali v Holmes which was heartbreaking to see

So many things about that Benn fight made me upset. The ref was totally incompetent, and Ferdie pacheco ripping Mcclellan as he believed he quit, when in fact he was in serious danger. That fight to this day upsets me to no end.

lots of fights. roy jones against johnson, calzaghe and green. the first KO loss to tarver wasnt as bad.

hopkins getting robbed against calzaghe and taylor was rough too. mcclellan vs benn ofcourse, all of hearns' losses and the BS draw against ray leonard. his first loss to leonard was the worst one though.

taylor losing to abraham was rough too, even though im a fan of both fighters. i saw the whole fight and couldnt be more happy, abraham was gonna get his points and taylor wasnt getting knockes out.. i thought. man when he dropped it was like seeing a loved one go down, it was painful.

#1 most painful moment is the shell of julian jackson getting KOd by verno phillips though. i felt sick to my stomach watching that one.

I have to go to Hopkins recent three defeats because i feel he won them all.

But the first TAYLOR one was hard. He outboxed Taylor but he did give Taylor some early rounds. I remember thinking (COME ON BERNARD, WHOOP HIM) then it started happening from the 9th round on i think.
But it was a close fight and i feel that a champ shouldn't lose his title like that.

Taylor losing to Chavez in their first encounter was very sad. The man fought his heart out and was not allowed to finish the fight he worked so hard to win. Of course the aftermath of his career amplifies that.

I'd say Joe Frazier getting the decision over Ali the first time, that win gave Joe Frazier a legacy and I don't think there is anything more sickening than that, perhaps Roberto Duran getting a gift decision over Iran Barkley, apparently the last three rounds are the only thing that matter to the judges because Duran never deserved that decision and the wrong man won.

Taylor losing to Chavez in their first encounter was very sad. The man fought his heart out and was not allowed to finish the fight he worked so hard to win. Of course the aftermath of his career amplifies that.

The aftermath was and is extremely sad. But I've always thought it was a good stoppage. People argue the 2 seconds left and that Chavez wouldn't have gotten another punch in. But Taylor either couldn't or wouldn't respond. Its not up to the ref to make judgment on the time left, only what is happening in the there and now. If Taylor answered Steele, he wins. As it was, he was a broken down and beat up fighter who simply didn't respond.

What I find difficult to contemplate is even if he had won the fight, would he still be the same fighter? Was his spirit broken by the loss or the beating Chavez doled out? Even if he won he was still going to the hospital. Would he ever have been able to come back as the fighter he was before that fight?

Either way way its a sad, sad situation. I was rooting for Taylor that night with a bunch of friends in Cancun on spring break. We were putting it to the locals at some bar up until the end and it was heartbreaking. still, I think it was the right call.

I always respect your views my friend and Im only slightly younger than you (40), but I always wonder.......would we have really been heartbroken than, or would we have cheered for Frazier? In hindsight we have our answer. But if we were grown enough to know what was going on during that time MAYBE we would have viewed it differently. I love Ali now. But I question how I may have felt then. Looking back, much of the country had shunned Ali because of his religious beliefs and the stand he took. As a patriot I can understand that. It was a different time. since then Ali his opened doors and eyes and we've all learned more and come much further as a country than then. I still wonder though if I'd feel the same than as now. Not sure where Im going with this, but I've said it.

That is an excellent point you brought. I'm not sure how i would have felt about Ali back then, because we as people tend to be strayed by the media and its perception of celebrities and athletes. My father was anti-establishment and loved Ali. I, a former national guard, might look at Ali entirely different. Ali's fighting style I would've favored, but his stand on the war could've played a factor in my looking at his personal views. Thanks for bringing that point of view into play

Ali getting beat up by Holmes is hands down the saddest moment I ever had boxingwise. This is the prototypical example of a fighter completely past it and still going for the big payday even though the body doesn't respond to the brain.

Seeing these things today (for example RJJ) still makes me feel bad, but never as bad as it did with Ali.

Anytime a washed-up former great has his career end with a beat down saddens me. Especially when that beat-down is delivered by a fighter who wouldn't have belonged in the same ring with the former great when he was in his prime.

I think you hit the three that affected me the most. Especially the Tyson-Douglas fight. I would add Ali-Frazier I (although I was in junior high and was rooting for Ali for more than boxing reasons) and the Duran-Leonard No Mas fight. I was a big, big Duran fan.

When nigel benn got a draw against Eubank in there 2nd match when I feel he did enough to get the win,

When Prince Naseem lost to Barrera, Dude had lost his focus by then, he pissed me off that he retired young and he had no motivation and he was more concerned with hotel rooms and his haircut and looking good than on his boxingad issues cus he missed his family during training camps. He should have come back to try to avenge his loss.

To me that fight was awesome as well. It was like the school-bully getting beat up by a nerd. Back in those days serious people was comparing Tyson to Ali and good men in earnest had Tyson as the all-time no. 1 HW. I loved Ali and thought he was leagues above Tyson so when Tyson most unexpectedly got beaten it was just a great feeling. I watched the fight in the middle of the night with some friends and it was impossible to fall asleep after that.

Well as an adult at the time I can confirm that Ali did polarise opinion for sure.
Obviously being over the pond the Vietnam thing wasn't as relevant over here but Ali's whole demenour/character was different to what we were used to.
I know exactly what you mean with your not sure where I'm going with this as I have thoughts on this but need to gather them and make sense. I'll put a bookmark in it for the moment.
