View Full Version : Putting a poll to it: John Ruiz vs. James Toney
neils7147933 04-15-2005, 10:29 PM Various threads have people throwing down their selections for this Apr. 30 bout. I thought it would be interesting to try to assemble some of them on the same thread.
I have 200 million points on the line vs. Oldgringo, in favor of Ruiz. I guess that pretty well demonstrates who I think is winning; I don't think Toney can fight on the inside against a guy that clinches so much and I don't think Toney has enough power to hurt Ruiz with one punch.

Jones buckeled Ruiz's legs in the 4th round.
Toney's going to brutalize Ruiz's rib cage, and he's going to catch him with counter uppercuts when Ruiz tries to hug.
Toney by UD, possible late KO.
And I will bet all the points I have on it the day before the fight (want to grow some more).
I hope someone will take me up on it.
joeboxer 04-15-2005, 10:34 PM Jones broke his nose too.
I picked Toney to frustrate Ruiz into a Dq loss.
....I said Toney but I'm not real sure about this one. Neils, I know your a Ruiz fan but this may be the first time I root for Toney in a fight. I don't think either guy has proven to be special as a heavyweight. Ruiz style is illegal and it shouldn't be allowed. He is the worst heavyweight champ to come along in quite some time. There is a reason Toney is fighting Ruiz and not Vit. It's the same reason RJJ targeted Ruiz and not Vit. In retrospect, if RJJ had the balls to step in with Vitali he may be dead right now so he made the wise choice. Toney is no fool and he knows what he has in Ruiz. Toney hasn't proved that he can beat a legitimate heavy and he still won't prove that by beating Ruiz.

Dan Goosen tried to open talks for Toney to fight Klitschko before Toney fought Booker. He said there was no interest from them to even discuss it.
.....I don't believe that for one minute.
Bozo_no no 04-16-2005, 12:00 AM .....I don't believe that for one minute.
I'm tired of people in this fourm saying Toney is afraid of Klitschko and doesn't want that fight.
I think he'd be hard pressed to win, but I've heard and read several times he wants the fight.
http://www.*********.com/newton19.htm
Also, I've heard Dan Gooesn interviewed saying he was trying to open talks to make the fight happen.
If Toney beats Ruiz, it may happen at some point late this year.
I just grow tired of reading "Toney wants no part of Klitschko" because that's what a few of you have dreamed up.
From hearing Toney talk, he's expressed more interest in the fight than I've ever heard from Vitali.
DAN GOOSEN: on Vitali Klitschko: "Is this the saviour of the heavyweight division? A man who mentions fights with Hassim Rahman and Monte Barrett before James Toney? He might as well come out and say he''ll never fight him. He almost went through the top 30 and didn't mention James' name once....
Kid Achilles 04-16-2005, 12:13 AM Rahman and Barrett are both more distinguished heavyweights than Toney. Toney hasn't fought a single credible heavyweight. No one wants to see Toney in with the best until he can prove that he can hold his own at heavyweight.
Bozo_no no 04-16-2005, 12:15 AM Rahman and Barrett are both more distinguished heavyweights than Toney. Toney hasn't fought a single credible heavyweight. No one wants to see Toney in with the best until he can prove that he can hold his own at heavyweight.
That doesn't mean he's afraid or doesn't want the fight, which is what I was referring to.
After Toney collect's Ruiz's WBA title, he'll have some credibility.
Living Legend 04-16-2005, 12:31 AM I think james toney is about due for a butt whopping...but ruiz has to be one of the most boring heavyweighst in history...I think I am going for teh winner I'm just going to watch the fight and hope teh best man wins
juanvalverde 04-16-2005, 12:44 AM I think james is in for a fight he doesnt expect..ruiz is much better than when he lost to Jones or Tua...
joffo 04-16-2005, 03:41 AM if it's the big fat lazy toney then a ruiz ko
if it's the big fat dynamo toney then a toney ko/ud
kadyo 04-16-2005, 03:50 AM Toney by ko/tko.
Toney's accurate punching will be the tell tale in this fight. Ruiz does not punch hard enough to gain any respect from James, and is too slow, dumb, and uncoordinated to stand a chance. Toney will pepper Johnny with uppercuts and hooks, and finish the job he has been yelling about.
Not to say that I would not want to see Ruiz win however. I actually want Toney to lose. I cant stand the guy. This is a mismatch IMO.
Toney has not beat a decent opponent at heavy yet, but he will beat Ruiz.....and that still will not qualify. Ruiz sucks.
puppy_dogg 04-16-2005, 02:44 PM lights out by decision. he can do alot more things than huggy bear, alot of guys ruiz has fought ended up fighting his fight and thats why ruiz wins decisions. i think toney wont fall into the huggy trap and he will win a decision off of some effective punches
UnstoppableOne 04-16-2005, 02:54 PM John Ruiz via Decision.....
You wanna know why??.....Cuz Toney's a Phoney!
Just kiddin but Ruiz is the silent killer watch out for this guy to breakout this fight....
lb.4lb.rob 04-17-2005, 09:06 AM toney by easy ko he does too much, for ruiz
AintGottaClue 04-17-2005, 09:17 AM heh if ruiz wins i get 100M from oldringo, if toney wins o well. win-win for me!!!!!
neils7147933 04-17-2005, 10:47 AM heh if ruiz wins i get 100M from oldringo, if toney wins o well. win-win for me!!!!!
I wonder how many
points Old Gringo has...it must be a ton if he's willing to bet 300M between the two of us...
JOM'S 04-17-2005, 11:29 AM toney by decision ...
Konstantin 04-17-2005, 01:08 PM Im tryin to analyze it but i cant really. Well i think the decision could go either way, but most probably for toney.
enadeus 04-17-2005, 02:01 PM After the night is over the fans will be chearing "Toney the Phoney".
stepmonster 04-19-2005, 10:20 PM i love james toney, i sure hope he wins this one.
stepmonster 04-19-2005, 10:20 PM john ruiz is easily the most boring belt holder to ever grace the heavyweight division. the guy is a hugging maniac
stepmonster 04-19-2005, 10:21 PM its fairly obvious that ruiz could care less about what people think about his hugging. he knows no one likes it, but he doesnt care, and he shouldnt have to. but he still is incredibly boring.
stepmonster 04-19-2005, 10:22 PM as much as i think that toney will win by UD i really wish he would come out guns a blazin and pull a 89' tyson on him and just KO him in 2 rounds.
bobbyjones 04-19-2005, 10:33 PM I think that Ruiz's punch and grab style will be perfect for Toney because I think that Toney can slip the right ahnd leads and then decimate Ruiz on the inside, but thats just me
Konstantin 04-19-2005, 10:41 PM Just a qus... why do so many people think that Toney can win this TKO/KO? How could he manage it and not Golata? Isnt the polish king a bigger puncher in the heavyweight division? I see everything outcome as possible except Ruiz being knocked out/ TKOd
bobbyjones 04-19-2005, 10:49 PM it has to do with styles...traditionally, Golota has been good on the inside mostly with other big men like himself. However because Toney is shorter and slips punches better and also has amazing punch accuracy, he has the chance to put Ruiz away.
dodge 04-20-2005, 05:53 AM JT is my favorite fighter right now so I pick him to win this bout.
FistoftheDallasStar 04-21-2005, 12:53 AM James Toney is good inside fighter and really hides the angles he throws punches really well. Ruiz will try to revert to his clinch receipe for a boring fight. But Toney is a veteran and will suprise John with his non stop peppering of punches of jabs and crosses. Ruiz will be forced to actually fight, much like when he fought Roy Jones. Then skill will overcome. Toney by late TKO or UD.
obaioghill 04-21-2005, 01:17 AM I must admit I am really intersested in this one - and it's kind of funny but I really don't like either of these guys that much. I think styles make fights and with Ruiz style it will be tough on Toney - because unlike Jones he sits back and moves his upper body and sholders while Jones had the footwork. There is no doubt that Toney is a more skilled boxer - but will he be able to show it with Jhawny? Also - look at what happend to Jirov - he and Toney went through a brutal fight and he got knocked down once - but at heavey...I just think this will be an interesting fight for Toney - or I should say a TELLING fight. I still have not been convinced with him as a heavey.
Jhawny "huggybear" Ruiz by ud or late TKO, maybe.
TheFairPole 04-21-2005, 02:00 AM There is no way Toney will Ko/Tko Ruiz! Ruiz will win this by ugly decision or by Tko! Ruiz for sure will knock Foney down a couple of times too! Ruiz will be too strong for Foney! Ruiz has gained a lot better power over the years so Foney better hope he don't get hit clean or he will be on his ass. Ruiz is gonna suprise the **** out of Foney when he hits him!

Wow dude 200 million big ones huh...good luck to both of ya
realheavyhands 04-22-2005, 11:33 PM ruiz will blast toney with jabs and straight rights...not wide like holyfield..they gone be harder to get away from without dancin or using legs like roy did..if toney wins ill give him mad props..if hes fat and steriod free

i couldnt agree with u more. ruiz style is so ****in boring (although it SHOULD be illegal, its not). both gyz haven't fought a legit HW. toney fought a 40 year old holyfield, n now, who can't beat holyfield? he beat booker, but tht gy wasn't amazing or antyhing. I wana c toney vs a real HW, not ruiz, hes a cow. sum1 like golata, or mcline. cuz thts the avg size for a HW now. a gy like ruiz is slightly less.
no matter who wins, ?'s will remain for both fighters
If toney wins, hes going to HAVE to take on the big competitino, i think he might get the winner of the mcline brock fight.
vB Martin 04-23-2005, 12:15 AM I think Toney will take this fight for 2 reasons:
The way Toney stands in with his left shoulder to the chest, basically sideways, will make it very hard for The Huggin *** to clinch, and even when he does, Toney will have enough room to throw a left or right uppercut or short rights to the body.
Ruiz's hugging, leaning style is tailor made for someone with Toney's Defensive Offense.
King knows that Ruiz will not fill any more seats. He needs someone who can put asses in seats and sell PPV. Toney will, for whatever limited time he can hold onto the title.

vB Martin 04-23-2005, 10:42 PM where have you been, vb? away in "shame"?
Busy busy busy with life and making money. We just completely revamped the vBulletin site and are working hard on 3.5
I should have added in my post that to beat Ruiz, Toney will have to be Spot On all night long. He will have to fight as well as he talks :)
woodybox2004 04-24-2005, 12:27 AM i hope the ref will be strict and disqualify ruiz
stepmonster 04-24-2005, 10:05 PM --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
hey how the heck do i download i have over 50 posts
loangunZ 04-24-2005, 11:02 PM I picked toney as a win by DQ but it depends on the ref if it's Nady then I think there is a good chance of ruiz getting DQed
....A quick tally brings it to 55-35 in favor of Toney. The survey says........enough John Ruiz already. The good news is that one of these guys should lose. I'm actually getting kind of excited about this fight. Not sure why though.
Xecutioner 04-26-2005, 01:38 PM after the weigh in if james looks in decent shape i'll make a 50 million point bet with any ruiz fan . :hijacked:
The End 04-27-2005, 06:38 AM I think James's condition will be terrible this saturday..I just read an article that says James only trained 5 weeks for this fight!
Ruiz might outwork him
Neuraxis 04-27-2005, 03:02 PM I think James's condition will be terrible this saturday..I just read an article that says James only trained 5 weeks for this fight!

Toney is really blowing it.
Kimmy 04-27-2005, 06:07 PM Toney is really blowing it.
Please publish this article that says Toney only trained 5 weeks for this fight!
BANE206 04-27-2005, 07:03 PM i just read where he had less time to train due to them moving the fight date up. regardless i see ruiz coming out trying to fight at a distance for the first few rounds and then going to his normal style. this isnt really a pick em fight but it is still a tough one to choose. ill go with Toney via 10th round KO.
Kimmy 04-27-2005, 07:59 PM This could actually be a very quick KO win for Toney. Toney is probably a decent puncher at heavyweight, not a hard, but decent. The difference will be the accurancy and speed of Toney`s shot plus Ruiz`s weak chin. I have put money on this fight today before the odds favour Toney more so. I place 50 to win 30. Its a risk yes but after reading all the opinions on this site and boxing news sites i can`t see anyway for Ruiz to win unless Toney gets old over night or the weight of Ruiz really effects James. i can`t see it happening. Toney`s ony weakness in the past has been weight draining before a fight, this isn`t the case anymore, i see Toney winning very easy!
Nautilus 04-27-2005, 08:16 PM Is Toney preparing his usual "weight problems" excuse for the looming loss to Ruiz? Has he given up already?
Gonzalo 04-28-2005, 01:27 AM I think James Toney is going to win by KO. Ruiz is a joke to me he doesn't even box all he does is grab.I predict James Toney KOs Ruiz like David Tua did.
THRILLAinmanila 04-28-2005, 01:54 AM I wish Toney kicks Ruiz' ass and KOs him early in the fight.
triggerhappy 04-28-2005, 10:31 AM ruiz has shown in boxing. he is one of the wrost heavyweights in history. all the man does is throw a punch and hugs very, very boring
Xecutioner 04-28-2005, 05:32 PM so anyone want that 50 mil point bet? :boxing:
trevorjulien 04-29-2005, 10:43 PM Toney has more KO power than Jones Jr. And it was obvious that Ruiz was stunned by RJ. I pick Toney to wear down Ruiz like he did Evander
mr. bojangles 04-30-2005, 12:13 AM I just hope that Toney ends that ugly punch-and-clinch boxing style of Ruiz. JT can slide sideways and catch huggybear with an uppercut-cross combo when he tries to come in. hey! i just put Ruiz' name with boxing in the same sentence. OMG!!!
Toney will wear him down, possibly a late KO win. :boxing:
Cambria 04-30-2005, 12:35 AM Ruiz by decision. Toney will run out of gas in the 8th
Kid Achilles 04-30-2005, 01:56 AM Ruiz will stop the little middleweight late in the fight. Toney is no Roy Jones. He's a softer, less explosive puncher and he has no mobility. He likes to fight on the inside and counterpunch but he's going to find that things won't go as he plans when Ruiz gets ahold of him and starts bulling him around. Johnny loves it when guys try to fight him on the inside. It just means they're closer to him and easier to grab and tie up after he lands a punch or two.
Have you forgotten about Toney's injury's? He just pulled a bicep in his last fight. How do you think his aging body is going to hold up to all of the wrestling?
The guy was awesome in his prime but he's in way over his head at heavyweight.
Toney was great in the early 90's. But, at Heavy has very little experience. If Ruiz has anything, it's experience. This difference alone will show bigtime. The true heavyweight wins this one.
Nautilus 04-30-2005, 11:51 PM Toney won. Cool.
neils7147933 05-01-2005, 10:21 AM 200000000.00 points donated to oldgringo successfully!
