I wonder how many will remember Billy Walker :)
He made his name on knocking out that American in the amateurs, good looking guy who was an exciting fighter if not exactly blessed with talent.

yeah different factors will allow fighters to get title shots or big paydays that they probably dont deserve based on their skill level look at john duddy who has a big irish following out here in ny and makes some money or jcc jr who has a father who is such a legend in his home country that his son can fight an unknown and have it on ppv

Julio cesar chavez jr is a very average fight, i couldnt even call him a contender thats an insult to fighters like angulo and david lopez

Nice to see Billy Walker getting talked about.

As for the Thread question. Micky Ward made millions soley of his fights with Gatti. Not bad for a fighter without much skill just heart and will.

It would be interesting to hear how much Brian Nielsen made. He was missive in his native Denmark and fought Tyson and Holmes. And he wasn't far above a club fighter.

How about Carlos Massau - that terrible, terrible "fluke" champion from Colombia? Bet they paid him a pretty penny to come over and lose to Hatton!

By the way, why do you guys speak so disparagingly of Brian Nielsen... the finest fighter to come out of Denmark since Battling Nelson!

Not only was he an Olympian - he actually won a bronze medal at the '92 Games. And as pro he went undefeated in his first 49 bouts against top-notch opposition - picking up the world (IBC and IBO) heavyweight crown along the way.

Furthermore... nah, who am I kidding? Your absolutely right - the guy was total garbage!

Lickle Ricky Hatton for me.

He was an ok champ, but was also one of the greatest draws of our era and really, he was pretty ****. Good, but for the amount of money he made you'd expect him to be one of the greatest of all time. The best fighter he ever beat in Tszyu, probably made a quarter of what lickle Ricky Hatton did, and yet he was a better champ ten times over who was champ for about three times as long too.

I'll throw out two home town boys. Neither got rich, but bot made some decent dough. Peter Manfredo did good for himself after the contender series, and Vinny Pazienza always had a strong following that let him earn some bucks over his career. Both made more than what they could have achieved alone had it not been for their charisma.

He made that money because he put boxing and more important the lighter weight classes in the spot light. On top of that most of his fights were filled with drama and anticipation. Love him or hate him, Hamed was good for the sport. Jmo.

I don't think he ever did a PPV, but HBO couldn't get enough of him when he was hot. I can remember watching him and saying this kid is the ****. At the same time my friends were saying what a dick he was. He was Floyd long before Floyd, only not as good, but more real. People wanted to see him fight whether it was to win or lose. The lower weight never really had that exposure, even during the early to mid 80's with such fighters as Bobby Chacon, Bozooka Limon and Danny Lopez. Believe me my friend, Hamed earned his money and made it possible for a lot of other fighters to get rich too.

Hamed was so hot that he almost sold out MSG for his fight with Kevin Kelley and had a gigantic poster of him put up by HBO to promote that fight on Times Square
