View Full Version : Ali 64 ( Liston1 ) vs Frazier 71
T3dBundy 11-25-2009, 08:21 AM When i watch Ali vs Liston 1, it was impossible for Liston to hold Ali on the ropes, while in 70s Ali nearly did allways the rope-a-dope.
Alis jab was more powerfull before they Lay off and Fraziers face looked rly bad after their first fight.
Who would win? and explain why..

sonnyboyx2 11-25-2009, 08:38 AM Ali (Clay) would win by UD due to his mobility and fast hands
Sugarj 11-25-2009, 01:19 PM Ali 1964 by close decision for me.
I would not be suprised if it would have been his toughest fight to date though, hell if Banks could knock Ali down with a left hook in 1962 and Cooper with a left hook in 1963, you'd be crazy to think that the 1971 version of Frazier wouldn't have been able to do so also.
I think that the Ali of 1967 was a fair bit better than the Ali of 1964, I would expect a wider decision from the peak Ali. Either way Frazier would give him a tough fight!

Because he had his "Man-Body"...he was stronger/thicker looking.
For TS question: ALI and I'll take the '66 or '67 Ali as well for my more favored version.

Co-sign, pretty much my view.

Against 1969 Frazier?
Benny Leonard 11-25-2009, 06:02 PM Against 1969 Frazier?

I know it pre-dates Frazier's biggest win but I think 1969 was about his prime.

Still, Peak vs. Peak....I'm still taking Ali by decision. Whether it be UD or Split...Ali Wins in my opinion. I think Ali could stay on the outside enough early-mid rounds to gather up some points and continue to do well enough through the rest of the fight to win the fight. Ali would start to tire though like the Chuvalo fight but Ali would still pull it out. Ali would have to worry about the left-hook though when in close and in the exchange. One thing with Frazier, he isn't afraid to throw the left-hook when you are punching...so when Ali is punching in punching distance, Frazier has a chance to catch him.

No i'd agree with that, it will always be some fight though I reckon, they'd put on TFOTY now!
Sugarj 11-26-2009, 09:29 AM It was interesting what GJC was saying earlier about Frazier's prime, he may well have been a touch better in 1969. He looked pretty useful against Quarry around that time and in very early 1970 looked his best ever in my opinion against Ellis.
His head movement was certainly very good back then.
JAB5239 11-27-2009, 03:30 AM Call me crazy, but I think any prime version of Frazier gives Ali fits. Ali was a faster fighter before the lay off, but Im not sure he was smarter. This fight is a war no matter who one thinks wins. I can see scenerios for both fighters winning on ant given night.
Left Hook Tua 11-27-2009, 04:38 AM love and respect joe but......
he's not on prime ali's level.
ali before the layoff would have danced circles around him.
probably have joe's eye all puffy from jabs and lead rights and hooks while dancing and win by tko.

Yes wouldn't suprise me if they kept the 2-1 average. People do forget that Ali/Clay never danced for 15 rounds and liked to rest even in prime. Frazier doesn't let you rest and I doubt even prime Ali will get Frazier out of there quickly.
7 or 8 rounds of Frazier on your chest takes the legs out of you, I favour Ali but there was something about these 2 that will make any version against any version a war.
Silencers 11-28-2009, 04:52 AM I don't think Frazier would've been able to catch Ali honestly, I think Ali would be able to move around and win the fight by fighting on the outside by decision.

Exactly the way I see it. Frazier never fought a prime Ali so there is no reason for me to believe he would do better or as good.
phallus 11-28-2009, 06:18 PM Ali 1966-67 vs. Fraizer of 1969???

this would be the best match, 1971 frazier was just past his prime. i think the style of frazier beats prime ali, everytime ali stopped dancing he'd get clubbed with the left hook
Lord Finesse 11-28-2009, 06:54 PM I think one of the main reasons why Ali lost to Frazier, in their first fight, was because of stamina issues. If I remember correctly, Ali was winning the first part of the fight. Then came the fatigue.
Even though he had two fights before that one, he still had some ring rust.
A '64 Ali would've done much better against Frazier. I don't think the Ali in '64 was him in his prime, but it was close.
I'd say Ali by decision.
