Edgar Sosa (37-5, 21 KOs) will be making the 11th defense (in 28 months) of his WBC light flyweight title. But the busy champion should have his hands full with Filipino challenger Rodel Mayol (25-4-1, 19 KOs), a boxer known for his whirlwind, non-stop attack style.
Mayol, a protege of Manny Pacquiao, is best known for recently giving WBO Champion Ivan Calderon the two toughest fights of his career — a controversial technical draw in their first bout and technical split decision loss in the second match.
Champion Sosa relishes the prospect of comparing his performance of tomorrow with that of Calderon.
“I predict that I will defeat Rodel Mayol by knockout. I want to win convincingly over someone who many say actually beat Calderon.”
For his part, Mayol will be stepping in the ring in a fifth attempt to win a world title and it will be, no doubt, with an element of pressing despair, knowing that this might be his last chance for glory. Says promoter Fausto Daniel Garcia, “This fight has the making of a real battle in the best tradition of the now time-honored rivalry between Mexican and Filipino boxers.”
