18/11/09 - Aleks E slams CroCop, claims to be negotiating with the UFC
Mirko ‘CroCop’ Filipovic is living off old glories and is well past his best, according to former adversary Aleksander Emelianenko. Filipovic stopped Alkes when they met in 2004, dropping him with a head kick and then finishing him on the floor.
At that time I was only 23, I was young and inexperienced in MMA. I lacked a lot of the skills needed to be able to fight at that level", Aleks told Croatian sports site Index.hr today. “Now, I would beat CroCop in his best form and that is why he does not want to face me again. He does not want a rematch because he knows I would win.”
The Russian heavyweight, brother of Fedor Emelianenko, claims Filipovic was offered the rematch several times in PRIDE FC but refused it. Shortly after facing Aleks, Filipovic faced Fedor and lost by decision. Since leaving PRIDE, Aleks says that Filipovic is “no longer physically powerful”.
"He probably stopped training and preparing for fights in the way that he used to. He has started to slack off. He wanted to live off of his old glories but the new kids are coming up. Physically, he does not seem to have the same power that he once did and he is not in the same shape.”
In the interview, Aleks said he is looking for a home in a major MMA promotion and claimed to be in negotiations with the UFC. However, the one time he was booked to fight in the USA ended in controversy when the California State Athletic Commission refused him a license to fight at Affliction Banned.
No reason for the refusal was given but the rumor was that Aleks had tested positive for hepatitis. He has always denied this, but Affliction never attempted to use him again - despite Aleks claiming to be booked for all three shows - and CSAC said he would never receive a license in their state.
