View Full Version : Anyone familiar with credit scores?
spinksjinx 04-09-2005, 08:37 AM I have recently been trying to build record for the past few months and have been able to get a gas card/jewelry card/providian platinum Visa with a 1,000 dollar limit. The interest is rather high on all of them but I have paid them off before the payment is due so I dont get charged the interest.
Now I recently got a credit report ran and it said my score was 691, I am a 20 year old college student so I dont know if that is high or not but just am curious? Anyone know and with to enlighten me on this on whether it is good or bad?

That is very good. Since you haven't had credit for too long that means you most likely haven't had too many, if any adverse postings on your report (delinquent payments and such). As you have more years on the report and keep your credit habits good (this is a tricky thing as it isn't always intuitive what they think is good) this will raise your score.
By the way, jewelery card? Buying something for the missus or yourself? :D
Here is a great site for investment and general financial information for beginners (myself included). It's pretty long but doesn't bog you down in financial terms.

spinksjinx 04-09-2005, 10:25 AM Pretty good read just read it.
The jewelry card was approved so I kept it, bought something nice for the lady and myself.
Thanks again.
neils7147933 04-12-2005, 10:16 PM Keep in mind that a score itself won't get you or deny you a loan. If you've only got one card, don't worry about your score yet. Just be concerned with continuing to build.
Carlao 04-12-2005, 10:38 PM 691 is a slightly above average score. Keep up building your credit and keep paying your stuff on time if not early. Now anything above 720 is a good score.
masterdirector 04-14-2005, 05:45 PM How do you find your credit score w/o giving out your SSN?
I always pay my stuff on time. Got one credit card, student credit card, with a $700 limit. Only didn't pay on time once b/c I forgot. I paid it in full the next day though, so will that negatively affect my credit score?

You can't find it out without the SSN and I think a credit card. They don't just give it out to anyone who is asking. Would you want anyone to have access who doesn't know your SSN but knows everything else?
Consumerinfo.com gives you one free credit report. I did it and it worked. Just make sure to cancel as soon as you get it.
spinksjinx 04-14-2005, 06:21 PM My credit card company if you go online they have your credit score and report available free to cardholders...Mine is providian, I like it.
Spinks, that's a damn good score for a kid your age. Your getting good scores when you get near 700 and anything over 700, especially 720 is golden. There of tons of mortgage programs now that go solely on your credit score and don't even take your income into the equation. More and more lenders are going with no income verifiers on their 2nd mtg credit lines nowadays. What will screw you when it comes to credit cards is if you have them maxed out. That will do a number on your score. Also avoid finance company paper if at all possible. Some jewelry stores, furniture stores, etc. will sell their paper to finance companies and just having finance company loans will bring your credit scores down.

spinksjinx 04-14-2005, 10:00 PM pbds-Yeah I have bought a watch and a necklace from the card but it just stays hidden away in my wallet. I should really cancel it considering I have a credit card and that will do me the same.....
Chups 04-15-2005, 12:36 AM I believe the perfect score is 900...or is it??
Last time I checked 2 years ago I had 809 when I refinanced my house....but then again...I'm older than you.
Purity 04-15-2005, 11:45 AM some good feedback in here. remember that credit scores don't get high right away. it takes years to get up to the 700's. here's some good basic tips:
-don't get behind. if you do, try to make it a one-time only sitch.
-keep balances under 60% of your credit limit.
-DO NOT pay off your balance every month. this does nothing.
-on the other hand, don't just make minimum payments. try making double your minimum payment every month.
-don't let credit cards get stale. use em at least once every 2 months.
-limit credit card inquiries on your report to NO MORE than 3 within a 90 day period. don't worry about mortgage or auto loan shopping. you're givin a 14 day window to do about 15 inquiries without having them affect yer score.
here's a lil score scale:
680-840: excellent
610-679: good
575-609: fair
500-574: poor
499-below: **** off
