The PS3 has much less failure rate than the 360. So you'd be better off buying a PS3.

The new 360s have no problems (unlike everyone is saying)

If you get an old system, then they both have problems with overheating. Xbox 360 (RRoD) PS3 (YLoD)

Unlike the PS3, the 360 comes with a 3 year warranty. The PS3 only comes with a 1.

(IMO) You should get a 360 elite.

Since the Jasper chip set the failure rate is under 10% (Same as the PS3)

According to an independent report by the warranty company SquareTrade, the Nintendo Wii is the most reliable of the current generation consoles, while the Xbox 360 remains the console with the highest system failure rate.

After two years of ownership, Wii owners reported only a 2.7 percent failure rate, with the PS3 in the middle at 10 percent, and the 360 at 23.7 percent. Excluding RROD errors, which are covered by a Microsoft warranty for 3 years, the Xbox 360 still had an 11.7 percent failure rate.

The sample size for the study was 16,000 units, but there are some notable facts to note. Most of the Wii failures were due to power issues and most of the non-RROD errors for the Xbox 360 was "Disc Read errors," the same as the PS3. Usage was also a factor, because the Wii, according to Nielsen numbers, is just about half of that of the Xbox 360. The report says the average 360 console is played or used for 1191 minutes per month, followed by the PS3 at 1053 and the Wii lagging way behind at 516.

Perhaps more notably, the report concludes that the new "Jasper" based Xbox 360s, which began shipping in late 2008, have almost completely killed RROD, and SquareTrade expects the failure rate to continue to fall as 2009 continues.

The jasper chip fixed RROD but 23% of 360's still fail with disc read errors.

Well for your new pad here it is:

PS3:
Netflix
Blu-Ray Movies
Free Online playing (not quite as good interface i.e. no cross game party chat or voice messages)
More reliable (just plain is)
Online browsing
Youtube (great for watching old fights and stuff with friends)

360:
Netflix (you have to be a $50 gold member to access this)
Myspace/Facebook
$50 Online playing (but better for communicating i.e. voice messages and cross game chat)
Better support for REAL competitive gameplay since MLG is all about 360.

Exclusives for both are meh to me. Not into Halo/Gears or Resistance/Killzone. Only 2 exclusives which I really like are MGS and Left4Dead.

There are a few other things which I don't think need mentioning here but here are a few.
360 is relatively easy to get modded and have lots of cheap games (although your account and 360 can get bricked by Microsoft).

PS3 is very easy and cheap to upgrade because they use industry standard components. So you can find a laptop 500gb HD for $60 but a 120gb by 360 is proprietary and will cost you $100.......same with headphones.....etc. PS3's can use almost any USB headset or bluetooth headset.

thanks to everyone, especially six shooter for throwin me those facts n opionions

this definetly helped
its a tough choice, xbox is sick for the games n achievements. online play is good, u can really compete with ur friends online on xbox n ****... chat , msn messanger... its good gaming console

but ps3 is a great dvd player, gaming console, and storage unit for mp3s, images, videos, and of corse its a web browser too. which is sick...

and now since i found out the breakdown percentage. i lean towards the ps3

PS3 is getting better every time.

I had an xbox360, but the fact that it kept breaking down on me, high price for online play, plus the no web browser just made me move over to PS3.

PS3 FTW!!!!!!

360 will cost you more in the long run, hands down. They just came out with a new wireless adapter that costs $80 or $65 for the old model.

Of course it's worth it. I don't want to run a huge blue Ethernet cable across my floor.

I'm guessing the new one lets you download at a higher speeds? Lot's of people stream HD movies on their 360s now.

It's way overpriced, it dosent do anything special, the exact same things for pc & laptops cost as little as $20. The newest one wont improve your speed unless you have the latest wireless standard on your other hardware.

Overall the 360 is better (online, current games library, cost), but the it's forthcoming games lineup looks quite bland to say the least, where as the PS3 has more promising games on the horizon. It'd be more inclined to go with the PS3 at this stage.

How is it better on cost?

Can someone even play online without a HD? I think HD's are pretty much a mandatory.
360: $300(harddrive included) + $40-$50 gold membership = ~$350

PS3: $300 (HD included) + $20 mic = ~$320

I am also on my 3rd Purchased 360 (I can take a picture of them if anyone really questions me) and nearly countless repairs.

Its a Wireless N adaptor, meant to be better and much faster than the first Xbox one. Less lag etc.

Its not as reliable as an ethernet cable but more practical

Yeah I disagree with the cost. My 360 cost alot more than a Slim would, they're both like what $300 in the US? Then you have to pay for live and a Wireless adaptor on top (you need a wireless adaptor realistically)

Whereas PS3 is pretty much everything you need as soon as you have it, the headset would be the only extra cost really.

Oh, you mean the 20gb HD with the old chip set that by some Consumer Advocate reports has a failure rate of between 34%-47%. I'll suggest for people to pass on that.

I have a 20GB Premium which has never failed on me and I got that 8 months after launch. Every fanboy has a different statistic for the 360 failure rate. And the PS3 isn't without fault either, there that yellow light thingy. Even still, the 60GB 360's usually have the Falcon and Jasper chipsets which are supposedly sound. I dunno, but taking off the fanboy specs, shopping around you can definitely still get an XBOX 360 which is XBOX Live ready for under $300, perhaps even with a game or two as well. And with the current games library and online I'd say the 360 is the better deal if you're not too interested in exclusive (I.E if all you'll buy is games like COD, FIFA, Fight Night, Madden etc). With that said I'd still go with the PS3 as it looks to have a stronger line up of games coming up.

It's common knowledge that the 360 has the highest failure rate of any console by a massive margin and probably one of the highest failure rates of any $200+ electronic product in history.

Its fanboy huh? Then I guess the consumerist, usatoday, New York Times and consumeraffairs must all be fanboy sites :lol1: There are independent non-game specific and game news sources that have reported on the 360's hardware failures.

Microsoft themselves by their very actions acknowledged that this was true by losing upto $1.15 BILLION in extending warranties. If that isn't enough for you they themselves said "an unacceptable number of repairs." was a reason for extending the warranty. A company taking that big a hit it is because they KNOW that they fvcked up.

Like any electronic product PS3 has had failures but unlike the 360's they were not as prevalent. To argue that the 360 is a more reliable piece of Hardware is just ridiculous.

Here the NYTimes "It has set aside $1.1 billion for repairs, a figure that suggests to industry analysts that the problem could affect a third of the 11.6 million 360s already in the hands of consumers." Translation 1/3 equals 33% failure by Microsofts very own estimates.

1.15 Billion dollar extended warranty is a defacto recall which allows Microsoft to save some face.

Microsofts strength is its online interface and fans of the 360 should be harping on this aspect instead of attempting to dilute themselves and others about its superior "reliability".
