View Full Version : Watch everyone start talkin **** bout boxing now....
Tha Greatest 04-06-2005, 01:25 AM The girl who died in the golden gloves will be on the front page of every website, newspaper, tv, etc. I read it and it was very sad, may she rest in peace..
All of a sudden people die in amateur boxing...out of every 100,000 amateur boxers, there is 1.3 deaths. In football, soccer, basketball, etc. There's 1000 times more deaths...
All of a sudden boxing turns into a sport where all the people die? What the **** is up with that ****...I wish some people would stop talkin **** about it, it's just really pissing me off...
My dad sees it on yahoo when he opens the internet up, then he says u hear a girl died in a boxing fight, then i say ya i know, and he says it's very bad..
I'm sure nobody would be sayin nothin if i was playin basketball..where the deaths are actually more than amateur boxing, and theres stats that back my words up...
There can be ten thousand deaths a year in football and it will still be boxing known as the "dangerous" sport...
I bet more people die walking down the street then in a amateur boxing match..
1.3 out of 100,000..That's just a huge number, i'm sure there is more deaths then that just by walking down the street of my boxing gym..boxing has saved my life and i dunno where i would be without it, it helped me in so many ways that people just can't appreciate that, if i wasn't boxing, what do they want me to do, go drink? go smoke weeD? go shoot up drugs? I'm sure boxing is more safer then all those, and even if there is a slim chance of death of dying in that ring, then i shall take the risks, i'd rather die in the ring then on the streets, i'd rather die like a warrior...
(not saying i'm gonna die, just really pissed off)
One person dies walkin down the street, and nobody says it's dangerous to walk down the street..ONLY BOXING THEY DO, what has this world come to...Thank you for reading what i feel at this moment, i wrote this when my dad starts actin like it's a bad sport cuz of one death....
masterdirector 04-06-2005, 02:04 AM you'd think after all the games in baseball every year that one entire team would get wiped out. Just a thought. attributed to george costanza.
Yeah the media loves to report anything bad on boxing. Big news sites NEVER reported **** about Floyd Mayweather, but as soon as that criminal abuse **** came out, they had a news story on Mayweather. What the **** is up with that?
Think about all the recent national news boxing things that the masses know about. Something bad about Tyson (always), Tonya Harding, Million Dollar Baby, some female "boxer" dies in the ring.
Instead of saying "let's improve the safety of boxing" the national media will say "let's ban boxing" as if this will even happen. They won't dare hold the referee or ringside doctor responsible. No, they'll hold the sport itself responsible. Hell, they'll probably try to somehow blame it on Tyson.
After all, everything that is wrong with boxing involves Tyson and Don King.
Most people are idiots. They think Tyson fouls a lot, bites all the time, is still with Don King. They think most boxing matches are fixed by Don King. They think boxing can't be good if the heavyweight division isn't good.
joeboxer 04-06-2005, 02:07 AM girls should go back to the kitchen and get out of the ring
Curly 04-06-2005, 04:03 AM There has been no deaths in MMA but once there is they'll be a bandwagon of politicians trying to get their name in the paper by banning the sport. You won't see anyone trying to ban cars and people die in them every say. Kids get paralyzed and killed in high school contact sports every year but they keep wrestling and boxing out of the schools because they're "dangerous". Other sports are more accepted so injuries and even deaths are just wrote off as freak accidents where as combat sports are considered "unsafe". Even though we have statistics proving how safe combat sports (boxing mma wrestling) are, stories like this will always set us back. MMA is illegal in a lot of states because politicians won't take the time to learn what the sport is all about. Ignorance is what hurts us the most.

That's a pretty hard statistic to believe, dude. Where's your source?
I mean, come on - I'm obviously a boxing fan... but boxing IS a sport where people get hit continuously in the damn head. You might hear of someone collapsing in football or a baseball game - but 1000 times as much?!? That's an irresponsible statement to make unless you have a reliable source to back it up...
And if you just made it up, that makes you worse than the journalists reporting on a real story.
Stickman 04-06-2005, 09:21 AM I think more people die of a heart attack watching

Actually, if you're over age 40, you have a better chance of dying from a heart attack on the ****ter, or having sex, than a boxer does of dying in the ring. Go figure.
Auto accidents, I believe, are still the #1 cause of accidental deaths, nearly double that of shooting deaths. I haven't seen any bills introduced to ban cars. However, the pneumonia and common flu kill more people than car accidents, and I also read in the JAMA that doctors could be the leading cause of death in the US. Can we ban those too?
masterdirector 04-06-2005, 09:27 AM I'm introducing a bill to ban Vans. I ****ing hate them. The drivers always drive so damn slow when I'm late for school!
Umm...the politicians won't put in much effort to ban MMA if an MMA fighter dies...cause nobody gives enough of a **** about MMA to care. It'd have to happen in UFC because that's the only MMA anybody in the states really knows about THAT much. And it is hard to see anybody dying in the UFC now with all the rules compared to what it was in the early to mid 90s.

Obviously there's not 1000 times more deaths in those other sports that he mentioned, but there are around 100 times more deaths in horse racing, which is a huge difference.
I would say that a boxing death gets at least 1000 times more media coverage than a death in any other sport. When have you heard anyone call for a ban on horse racing?

they are gonna talk crap
but is the same about everything else tho
who was talking about living will's until the
Schiavo case??
masterdirector 04-06-2005, 09:35 AM it is called Agenda Setting Theory. They tell us not what to think, but what to think about.
The media takes it a step further with Framing...where they do tell us what to think.
FrankJack 04-06-2005, 10:20 AM Man, I live in Texas, and EVERY year I hear about how a kid dies at his school during track practice or football practice. I dunno if this Golden Gloves incident is gonna get blown up around my area (DFW) though, I'll have to peep the papers.
Stickman 04-06-2005, 10:29 AM Well, it's already on Fox News, and they're doing to do an interview with Lady Ali about it....I expect the usual liberal media hype (not from Fox....they're pretty non-biased most of the time) trying to (unsuccessfully) get the sport banned, but I expect the publicity to eventually work to help the sport, rather than hurt it. Any publicity is good publicity, as they say. And even if people tune into fights hoping to see serious injury, they are more/new viewers, making more advertising money, more cash in fighter's pockets, and all in all, a good thing.
boxernyc 04-06-2005, 11:01 AM There are definitely sports that the media has a vested interest in only reporting when something goes wrong. Actually, that is true of the media in general. Steroids in baseball anyone? But the reason this became such a big story is that it was a girl in boxing. Especially after Million Dollar Baby (I won't give anything away for those who haven't seen it yet).
There was a story a while back that made big news too when a kid died running around a track in a plastic suit in 90 degree weather trying to cut weight for his high school wrestling team. That was messed up but it gives people a biased view of wrestling. Most people don't know anything about wrestling and know very little more about boxing, so when all that gets reported is the deaths people think that these sports should get banned. Like someone before mentioned this sport does a lot to help people straigten out their lives. It does a lot for kids on the edge. You will rarely hear about that, you will more likely hear about the Floyd's and the Mike Tyson's the guys who let the fame get to them and think they can do as they please. They rarely talk about the people like B Hops who reformed and became role models for people who follow the sport. Damn I wish I could have his dedication to the sport. It may be an exaggeration but I hear he trains 365 days a year.
Anyways, sorry for the rant. I just had several people e-mail me this trying to convince me to stop boxing and I just didn't reply because they do care for me and I can't get that pissed at them for it.
Bombardier 04-06-2005, 11:10 AM Fact is boxing has been around since the beginning of time. It was one of the original sports in the Ancient Olympic games, in a form not too much different from what you see today. And it will be around long after these other sports have disappeared. The modern poitics and politeness that drag it down are just an illusion. Boxing is indestructible.

That was my point. Hyperbole has no place in making an argument like this. It takes away from one's credibility. He probably should have just linked this site or put up a real number.

Kid Achilles 04-06-2005, 01:09 PM Fox News is crap. The most biased station by far. Right before the GOP convention, every other news station on TV had extended coverage of the rallies going on in the city. There were thousands upon thousands of people protesting. What did Fox News have? Some electricians putting up lights inside the convention hall and the brief mentioning of a "few hundred" protestors outside. It was almost surreal, flipping through C-Span, CNN, etc. and seeing the angry mobs and then going to Fox and watching some prominant republicans being interviewed inside the building.
There is a media bias, and it is a republican one. Well more accurately a corporate one, but since the vast majority of corportations are conservative in their interests, it can be said that the republicans dominate the media.

exactly - I didn't feel like writing an essay so I just laughed it off and figured those "in the know" would recognize...
tracylee 04-06-2005, 02:11 PM It does completely suck that the only news coverage that boxing seems to ever get is the negative kind! It's always been that way, and apparently always will. We fans love it though, and know the real deal..so screw the rest of them!
Bombardier 04-06-2005, 02:25 PM Another reason why boxing gets only negative coverage is that most people involved in it come from poor backgrounds. There's always a bias towards sports that tradionally rich people play, like tennis and golf. Not to mention amateur sports. Fact is that many newspaper sports editors are snobs and consider "real" sports to be those contested by amateurs. That is to say, amateur sports contested by rich kids: skiing, swimming, gynmastics, etc.
xrhythmxnxbluesx 04-06-2005, 02:41 PM yea it suks... this is one reason why boxing isn't as popular as it use to be... media suks... but imo boxing isnt the most dangerous sport... muay thai kickboxing is... my trainer killed 2 people in the ring and he knows other fighters that got killed as well in the ring.. but yea the media reports this kinda stuff and couldnt even write about the morales pac fight and other good fights... juss stuff like this.. may her rest in peace...

someone posted the link for me(thank you very much)

#2. I was just exaggerating when i said 1000 times more, i was just sayin they're higher than boxing..

I have never heard any figures relating to that. I would never have thought of dying in that way- this is something to think about when i hit 40 lol
.:UK RuPtUrE:. 05-05-2005, 02:44 PM If people wanna take part in the sport they take the risks.
That is unless they are not professional enough to admit that they are at risk or are naive enough not to accept the risks. End of.

Well >way< more people play football and basketball, and I seriously doubt theres been any deaths in basketball, unless someone got a subdural hematoma from an elbow or something. Football, I can see where deaths will occur, but again take into consideration the sheer number of football athletes opposed to boxers...it's more than 20 to 1, boxing is a cult sport these days except for in certain parts of certain cities. Parents want their children to play football, basketball, or baseball...even soccer.. boxing is far more less popular than all those sports. Many claim Tyson was the downfall of the sport, but I know the true downfall was the invention of ekg/mri scanning.
sure there are more injuries/deaths in football maybe, but remember, that sport is way more played than boxing. and like our man toney says, 'you don't play boxing.'
