My client, mr. Curly Howard, is in a meeting at the moment. However, If you would like to wait for him here I would certainly make sure that he answers all of your questions.

lol I have talked to Mr. Reno via PM once. He's finishing up some other projects he has going then he's going to start on global. I offered to assist him in any way I could.

What'd you do that for? I thought you didnt want to get tied down and work on any websites....

I didn't say I was going to work for any web site, I just said I'd help get it jump started again. There's no way I'd go back to the way it was.

it was that bad or what?

It wasn't fun, well it was at first but then it got to be like having another job.

ok here's the deal and don't tell anyone. I love this place, I always have and always will and I hated to see it go to waste.
A lot of people put in too much time and effort taking this place from a sherdog spin-off to a legit MMA web site.
I just want to help get it off of life support again. Not that I could do that myself, but I wanted to try and help.
I have no desire to ever run another MMA web site. I had a chance to buy Global and turned it down because It was already taking away time from my life. I have goals I want to accomplish over the next few years and I know if I had this place I would have spent every free minute working on it.
I think Rick has the means to do more with this site than I ever had. The boxing site has tons of traffic and dedicated users. With some time, I can see this place like that. With all the new fans to the sport there's room for more forums like this.

Just depends, Global didn't have any real sponsors or advertisers. We were picky about what ads we used. (no pop ups)
Plus MMA isn't as popular as boxing so getting legit advertisers wasn't easy. I don't know what RIck charges but from what I've read it's usualy around $25 a month for banner ads on a site like this.

Server costs about $50 a month on average. Software is about $200 a year average.

Global had 3000+ members and an over 300 MB database. I can't go in to exact numbers on the deal but it was under $1000.

To start up a site like this one using vBulletin and a good server would cost you between $200-$300 depending on if you did the work yourself.

Start up costs would be a lot more for a dedicated server like the one this site runs on. A good dedicated server is a few hundred dollars a month, not including the setup fees, money I throw to guys who sort out complex server issues that need immediate attention. Factor in script licenses, other costs and you have got close to a $1,100 start if you do everything yourself, setting up the dedicated server for top performance by someone who knows their **** would cost a bit more. We also have a backup server in case this server crashes which is also more and all of our scripts are paid scripts that require licenses and yearly fees to obtain new versions and support.

The cheapest ad rates we have are $50 per week, $175 per month to the most expensive being $75 per week and $250 per month. These rates are actually cheap compared to some of the other sites.

The most expensive part of obtaining Global was merging the two databases into one, very complex process, had two coders including myself do the time consuming process.

I was talking about setting up a site like Global was as far as the prices. I wouldn't want to even touch a project like BS. We had a shared server that ran $50 a month plus a back up for another $50.
vBulletin cost us $85 for a year and vbPortal was like $25.

If you're getting that much for ads that's great. Most places I talked to were getting around $25 a month when we were trying to figure out how much to charge but they didn't have the traffic that BS has either.
