I make a Ricky Hatton style 'Aaagh' every time I hit the bag or pads.

I find it helps me to hit harder and push myself harder.

I shout "WAAARRRGHARBL!" everytime I punch.

Seriously though... It's supposed to be in through the nose, out through the mouth with your teeth and jaw clenched. I can't breathe through my nose very well so I breathe in and out through my mouth all the time, just have to keep your jaw shut.

The whoosh noise just comes from breathing out more forcefully than you usually would when breathing normally. The screaming or grunting people do is just for added emphasis lol.

Breathing out of your nose forcefully like that, specially with a bloody nose would not be the best of ideas.

You should be breathing through your nose, and when you fire punches exhaling out of your mouth.

I try to breathe only through my nose unless I'm gassed.

In through your nose, and out through your mouth.

A lot of people make that "ushhhhhh" sound every time they punch just so you don't forget to exhale out your mouth..

There are a few key points nobody has pointed out yet.

1. Since anytime you are punching you are also leaving yourself vulnerable. Exhaling will clear your lungs of air and make it a lot harder for you to be able to be winded should you be hit in the body.

2. Breathing out when punching will loosen up your shoulders and give you that "pop" on your punch.

3. It's normal for novice fighters to hold their breath when they are tense or nervous. Getting in the habit of exhaling with every punch ensures that a fighter is breathing.

Another important thing to remember is to keep breathing when you're not punching. Sounds obvious, but alot of people remember to exhale hard when the punch, but when they are moving they stop breathing.

Exhaling also tightens your abs making them harder and giving you more protection. If you get hit while inhaling (while your abs are loose) OUCH!
