View Full Version : sven ottke?
AintGottaClue 04-02-2005, 03:51 PM i havent seen any of his fights, and by his record i can see that he lives up to his nickname phantom cause he only has 6 KOs.
but from what i read on baords peopel get robbed when they fight him so heres my question. how good was ottke? are people degrading his over all skill cause of some robberys? or would he be 0-36 if it wasnt for german scoring. how many fights do u really think he lost and how good was he at boxing?
Neuraxis 04-02-2005, 04:01 PM He's the Chris Byrd of Germany, light hitting, boring style, with a few gift decisions. It seems like Americans for the most part tend to dislike anyone who didn't fight in the U.S. Until I see some evidence otherwise I am just going to treat Ottke the same way I treat Beyer. I've challenged people here numerous times on Beyer vs. Green I, saying that there was nothing wrong with it, only to be met with silence. This place has some "highlights" of his fights.

Martin (Top Knowledge) 04-02-2005, 04:03 PM Sturmrules???... I'd have thought you were from Germany?... ;)
I've seen about 5 or 6 Ottke fights (mostly later in his career on Eurosport)...
But I saw him lose quite a few fights and pick up the win. You had to knock him out to win, and he was quit a good boxer so it was hard for guy's to knock him out without getting countered. But as his record suggests, he didn't carry a punch.
The worst fight for corruption I've ever seen was Robin Reid vs Sven Ottke (the fight before his last)... And EVERYONE was against Reid that night. The referee deducted a point of Reid when he scored a clear KNOCK DOWN! (for pshing or something)... And towards the end of the fight Robin Reid was jumping up and down in the ring in frustration as he got warned by the referee everytime he threw a punch at Ottke.
All I know... Is that Ottke was BAD for boxing.

Super_Lightweight 04-02-2005, 06:07 PM It seems like Americans for the most part tend to dislike anyone who didn't fight in the U.S. Until I see some evidence otherwise I am just going to treat Ottke the same way I treat Beyer.
It would only help European guys to fight here. We have international judges. Guys from other countries fight here, so why cannot Europeans do it more often? Mormeck is stepping up, and he's from France. Sturm stepped up, and he was rewarded with recognition and respect. Vitali and Lennox stepped it up and were both hits. I'm a huge Vitali fan.
Europeans NEED to fight in the U.S. because quite simply, there are too many shenanigans to deal with in Europe when fair-judging and reffing is much more likely in the big cities in the U.S.
Sven Ottke is the only fighter I've ever seen who was able to get points for getting hit! lol...
It's really simple, man. U.S. is where the recognition, respect, and real fighters are. That's why they all come here from Mexico. Anyone who doesn't is fooling themselves. DM stayed in Germany and it cost him. Half the fans in the U.S. don't know him. Calzahe always fights in Europe and pulls out of fights and has had questionable reffing for him and Ricky Hatton is a badass little dude but his promoters are too scared to send him to the U.S.
There is no arrogance here. It is just a simple fact that the U.S. is where the boxing scene is. End of story. If fighters from Europe would fight here more often maybe people would like them more, but how the hell can you expect us to when we never get to see their asses and only their questionable hometown judging and reffing makes the headlines?

Apparently you've conviently missed all of the joke decisions in the U.S. in recent years. And its turning out looking like the boxing scene was in the U.S. Fights in Europe are making just as much if not more than in the U.S. now. Certain divisions are nearly completely controlled by Europe as well. The U.S. only controls 1/4 of the belts at super middlweight, 0 of the belt at cruiserweight, 3/4 of the belts at heavyweight though the vast majority of prospects are not from the U.S., and 0 of the belts at light heavyweight. I'm wondering what Jeff Lacy is going to do at super middleweight. All three of the other belts are held by Europeans. I don't see Lacy making the trip over there to fight them, and I certainly don't see two of the three beltholders, Calzaghe and Beyer ever fighting in the U.S.
