I'm a new boxer, been training for about 5 months and am just about ready to start sparring, but am not sure as to what gloves I should be sparring with as I do not want to cut/hurt my sparring partner.

I currently hit the bag/mitts with 16oz Title Platinum's, which have a velcro hook and loop fastener.

Should I be looking exclusively for lace up gloves to spar with, or is hook/loop okay with certain designs?

I guess the terms bag gloves, training gloves seem to be used under a lot of different contexts, and I'm just not sure what I should be sparring with vs hitting the bag with.

I prefer lace up's for Sparring. Dependent on your weightclass 16oz or 14oz (147 or below) , but most gyms go with 16's all across the board. You want to get training gloves for sparring. The way the padding is spread out is usually the difference between bag and training.

training by urself or at a gym? we use 16oz gloves with velcro. U shouldn't go more than three rounds for now and those will be just fine

Get velcro ones. Lace ups offer better wrist support but they're just such a pain in the ass to have to get someone to tie up your gloves and then untie them when you're finished.

Some gyms allow 14oz for people under a certain weight, ask your trainer what the rules are before you buy. 16oz is standard for most gyms though.

You should have two pairs of gloves, one for bag and mitts and one for sparring. If you use the same glove for both the padding will get broken down from hitting the bag and you will hurt your sparring partner more. You can use bag or training gloves for hitting the bag, but you shouldn't be using bag gloves for sparring.

Bag gloves are firmer to give more protection to your hand when hitting a hard heavy bag. Training gloves are generally softer to give more protection to your sparring partner.

Let us know what your price range is and we can pick out a couple brands for you. Ringside IMF tech gloves are great for sparring and aren't too expensive.

Definitely shouldn't use the same gloves for bag/mitt work and sparring. Like someone stated earlier, they'll just hurt your sparring partner. Hook-n-Loop or lace-up is only your personal prefference, I doubt a gym will care which one you use. I personally like velcro because Lace-up's are a pain in the ass. Get some 16 oz if you're over 125 lbs, 14 oz if you're lower.

I picked up my title bag gloves without any real input, and while I like them, I'd like to make a more informed decision about my sparring gloves.

Never used the IMF ones myself, but my old coach said they were the best designed sparring gloves he had seen (and he was old lol). A bunch of other people from my gyms have used them and I've heard nothing but good things.

I bought the Heat seekers for 46 bucks shipping included...Great Gloves!! I got the lace ups 16 oz. Ever since i have been wearing those my hands and wrist have stopped feeling sore after workouts. I really think these are the best bang for the buck. I am going to buy another pair just to have cause they are so great for the price.
