View Full Version : Can two free-agent MMA fighters get together and fight each other independently?

Example: If Fedor and Brock Leasner completed their contract with UFC & Strikeforce and didn't resign with them.

Could they fight each other without a major MMA promotion like boxers do it. Set up a date, venue, agree on the split of the generated revenue from PPV & tickets etc. Give the fight/event a name like boxing events do (I.E. The World Awaits for Delahoya/Mayweather).

And sell the rights to a network (CBS, Showtime, HBO whoever) to replay the fight next week after the PPV.

IS THIS POSSIBLE WITH MMA FIGHTERS OR DO THEY HAVE TO FIGHT UNDER A MMA ORGANIZATION?

Yeah they could. Golden Boy promotions could promote the fight for them if they are free from contract.

Yeah, they could have Golden Boy promoting it.

It would be sweet if they fought.

How much does a license to promote costs, hell if I know, but even Floyd, the self-proclaimed boxing promoter, is not even a licensed promoter in LV/NV.

Anyway, y'all have to remember, even if Fedor is no longer with Strikeforce, he still has a deal with M-1 Global.

That would be awesome. It would also set a precedent.
MMA needs free agents to be able to make some big fights.

UFC is the only organzation making problems for this to happen, every other org. would love to cross promote and have the best fight the best, but Dana is protection his brand...

It is possible in theory but not for a fighter who is UFC Champion like Lesnar. The champions clause in UFC contracts means if you're Champion at the end of your contract, it automatically extends.
