With all the talk about Holyfield and other older boxers needing to retire; why did everyone forget to mention Toney.
First of all, his speech is so badly slurred you can barely make out anything he is saying. For example in his recent press conference with John Ruiz all I could make out was an occassional, " punk", " *****", " i dont play boxing" , " boy" etc. I'm sure each of these were connected by verbs, nouns, and other parts of language; I just couldnt make any of it out.

Seriously though, has he always been like this, or has his speech and cognitive function dramatically declined over the years.

yeah, i was actually joking more than anything. but really i was wondering if his speech has always been like that. i never really followed him that much. b/c if he used to talk like ali, roy jones, or lennox lewis, then he may have some brain damage settin in

Toney has always had problems with the English language. He has always swore and allot of people find it hard to understand his speach, even when he was 25 yrs old! He hasn`t taken too much punishment over the years because of his defence and savy. And if the level of heavyweight competition are the likes of John Ruiz and Evander Holyfield ( an old Holy ) then its not likely to change! If you wanna retire someone show concern for people whom have showed ALARMING effects through boxing. I.E

Evander Holyfield
Riddick Bowe
Juilo Cesar Chavez
Kevin kelly

These fighters were exceptional world class operators whom skills have faded to such an extent that they are now vunerable and your concern would be appreciated!

Why should he retire?? He thinks he is "The best God damn Heavyweight period"
I hate the guy! But that's what makes him famous.
So until someone in the heavyweight division totally humiliates him, retirement is not an option. And he will become a world champion! So why stop now???

Bad post!

I agree, he needs to retire and leave room for savage tigers like John Ruiz to roam free. I am worried that Toney's ugly style will ruin this fight. Ruiz usually makes for exciting fights but Toney's defensive nature could spoil it.

toney needs to cement his legacy first, he'll savagely attack johnny louise cause james needs that WBA belt, although i'd rather see him take the IBF belt ( to complete his collection ) or both...JT gonna lay the same beatdown on tha manlover that he gave to holy, when he gets a belt, or two, he'll retire

You know what I find funny? That us boxing fans talk so much about fighters lives outside the ring than inside the ring. Whether James Toney speech is great has nothing to with boxing. Bottomline: James Toney is a proven great fighter(check his resume) and he can bring interest back to heavyweight boxing.

And I saw an interview after the RJ fight from 1994 and Toney sounds the same then as he does now.

Toney cant retire. After Ruiz hugs him and Toneys tities explode he will need to continue fighting to pay for the medical bills.

Only if you put Sturm in the top 20 all-time greatest middleweights ever.

I hate to admit it but i bet john Ruiz, the hugging grand champion is gonna win against toney, Ruiz has got the heart and the hugging skill to do it, plus it would be funny to see what toney's reaction will be.

I was basically just wondering if he always sounded like that. Its easier trying to understand what the Klitshkos are saying. About him retiring, I was being semi-sarcastic. I don't care that much for the " persona " that is james toney. I respect his skills though. One thing I dont respect is his mentioning of beating Holyfield like it was some great accomplishment. Holy field is my fav but he was way past his prime. YOu never heard Holmes bragging about beating Ali. This fight is lose / lose for me. I cant stand Ruiz's style and crybaby trainer; I cant stand Toney's mouth. However if its good press for boxing and if it gets boxing back in the sports pages then so be it.

Holmes definitly did brag about beating Ali. That is one of the reasons he was so unpopular.

Toney is the best thing that happened to the HW divistion since Vitali. He adds excitement, and adds a decent fighter to this watered down division. He shouldn't go anywhere, and he wont.

I have yet to read the posts on this thread and this is my opinion.

Why should James Toney retire if he can still fight with the elite. I agree that he is some deep water with the Heavyweights, but for the most part he can back swim his way to shore. With his defensive and countering skills James will win the title that he is looking for against Ruiz. Some of the bigger guys could give him alot of trouble, but I could still see him pulling it out. James has never been one to take a beating. Not in the gym nor in his fights. James is not damaged goods at this point and for that reason I see nothing that makes me say that he should retire. After this bout with Ruiz I could seriously see James considering retirement. But like so many fighters before him, he is used to and loves the lime light and the fame. After this bout possibly, but why even say that he should retire when he is on the verge of winning the heavyweight crown..............Rockin' :boxing:
