Who would you say the 5 best are? I would choose

JMM
M.A.B.
Mayweather
Judah
Casamayor

Who do you think the best pure "counterpunchers" are?

I agree with Barrera for sure, and mayweather. Haven`t seen anything great counter wise from Judah. Tsyzu is despective with his counter punching, he is skilled.
Actually, looking at Vargas this past weekend and the Quartey fight from old, Fernando isn't at all bad!

1. James "Lights Out" Toney
2. Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins
3. Chris Byrd (even though they aren't hard counters.)
4. Fernando Vargas was pretty good to me also at counter-punching, I always liked how he paused and seemed to be thinking in the fight..
5. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

good list, forgot about toney and byrd, both experts in counterpunching, could you imagine if byrd had heavyweight power? he hit mccline so many times flush on the chin in that fight he would have put him in a coma

Why does everyone think Hopkins is purely a "counterpuncher". He does distance himself well, and did show against Joppy and Eastman that he can counterpunch, but he is more of a planned fighter. He executes the motions, and leads in....throwing combiations, then backs out.

If you compare him to guys like Casamayor, Judah, JMM, and others, they wait for the punch to come, and counter it. I think some people are confusing "slickness" with "counterpunching".......Two whole different things.

Only as of late has Hopkins been "counterpunching". He used to not fight the way he does now. I dont remember him countering a damn thing Holmes threw at him.

I have to say tszyu is very underated as a counter puncher, and being from down under i see alot of Mundine (Who I hope Beats Kessler) and all he does is counter punch.

Couldn't agree more with you, i have followed Nard alot and have only noticed as of late he counterpunches more than he ever has, he is old school, he can get in there and do the dirty stuff, or just pick yhou apart from the outside, but lately counterpunching is another string to his bow, i have also noticed in sparring Tszyu is counterpunching alot more.

Must be age.

I think that is what he does..."purely". He used to not rely on his counterpunching ability, only as of late. Ever since the Tito fight I suppose. And yes, you are right about the age thing....I think that is the reason for this change in style.

Juan Manuel Marquez is the best counterpuncher in boxing, IMO. He relies SOLELY on that attribute to be successful. Toney definitely deserves some mention.

Good list Runw/Knives. Marquez is clearly the best of those. Another one who's "newly aquired" countering skills should be mentioned is Corrales. For someone who very recently was known only as a slugger, he's improved by leaps and bounds in skills. Goosen knows his ****.

About Marquez.....I just love to watch the guy in action. He turns counterpunching into a damned art. It's a joy to watch him work.

How bout roy jones? he'd back up and throw the "check left hook" like nobody's business against most people who tried to pressure him.

Toney of course. Mayweather. Zab. Casa.

Not Vargas. I take it that list wasn't in order Jack. How could you possibly have Vargas above Mayweather in counterpunching?

El Feroz had one rather uneventful fight. Let's see him against someone with a good bit more accuracy than Joval before we start classifying Nando as a good counterpuncher. He did good, no doubt, I was impressed, but it is hard for me to imagine him keeping to the countering against say Winky Wright.

Lewis definitely made people pay with that right uppercut if they missed coming in
