Who should be considered the greater lightweight, between the two?

Either one. Doesn't really matter. I personally think Leonard was better ie. more accomplished.

Thats what I'm feeling too. I like to take the oppression Gan's faced into consideration, but NOBODY at lightweight beat better comp than Leonard.

I lean towards Leonard but there isn't much in it, would be some fight.

To me there's only 1 man that ranks in front of Leonard at lightweight and that's Duran.

Gotta factor in the absurd conditiongs Gans was forced to fight in, and still somehow managed to win. Guy practically pulled off the impossible multiple times in his career. The fix was in on him, but he managed to find a way. Prime Gans at his best was never beaten.

Cox's Corner got a good article on him:

I've always thought that during the time and circumstances Gans fought in he had to be incredible to amass the record he has. That said, I still think Leonard beat better comp. But I wouldn't argue with anyone who has either Gans, Leonard or Duran as their top lightweight ever.
